Star Trek can be anything, and Section 31 was FUN! :)
If Star Trek is to continue another 30 years it must grow and evolve, and that takes bold experiments and new visions. I'm all for that.
Also, it benefits immensely from a second watching, when you already know the genre and the characters!

"The central conflict of Boimler trying to find meaning to life was fascinating to watch. Fun action scenes, a couple pokes at us fanfic writers not understanding story flow or proper exposition (I like to think I improved in that department... I hope...)"
