Great inequalities persist in air quality monitoring. People in rich countries are 12x more likely than to have monitoring. But that doesn’t mean we need to wait for more monitors to reduce air pollution… ⬇️ new paper with Camille de Lauriere and Ella Henninger in PNAS : www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Commenting on the @thecccuk.bsky.social's Seventh Carbon Budget,  @tommlancaster.bsky.social, @eciu.net said: “The Climate Change Committee makes it clear that, after over a decade of delay, now is the time to tackle emissions from farming and land use" eciu.net/media/press...

Tropical forests are not changing fast enough to keep pace with climate change. New paper in Science today by @jeaggu.bsky.social shows that <22% of new trees recruiting into forests have traits better adapted to the new climate. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

#FoodSecurity could be hurt by declining crop diversity if #temperatures rise over 1.5°C. Warming decreases the cropland suitable for staple crops that account for over 2/3 of global food energy intake. Tropical root crops, #cereals & #pulses are most vulnerable… (1/2) www.aalto.fi/en/news/stud...

forests have memories. mushrooms communicate. trees warn each other of danger. entire underground networks pulse with messages, storing knowledge older than civilization. western science is only just catching up to what indigenous cultures have always known—nature isn’t just alive, it’s intelligent.

"There is a lot of uncertainty about meeting #Climate goals in Europe and the world. Operating in this environment is challenging. We need clear objectives on the horizon" says our @juliabognar.bsky.social in her interview with @mauromereu.bsky.social @en.ioplus.nl‬ 🌱 #GreenTransition

Swiss #farmers sue their government for not acting on #climatechange, as #drought & heat, #storms, hail and changes in the seasons led to losses of 10-40% in annual turnover over 3 years. The agri-food sector (esp. livestock) accounts for one-third of global GHG emissions: doi.org/10.1038/d415...

Here's the speech if you haven't heard it. 13 minutes of your time. Share it with your American friends and neighbours, because they won't see it otherwise. Circulate it in Mexico and Denmark, France and the UK, Panama and Germany, Poland and Estonia, and especially -- especially -- Ukraine.

Incredibly moving Justin Trudeau remarks: "We have fought and died alongside you....During your darkest hours...we were always there. Standing with you, grieving with you, the American people....Canadians are a little perplexed as to why our closest friends and neighbors are choosing to target us."

Update on EU's 2040 Target: European Parliament EPP Party MEP Peter Liese has indicated that the EPP cannot currently support a 2040 climate target to cut 90% of emissions as recommended by the European Commission.

"We need a fundamental shift in how we produce food—one that recognizes that food production efficiency comes at the cost of ecosystem robustness and the loss of #biodiversity. By mimicking nature's complex mosaic of habitats, we can strengthen the resilience of food webs." 🌐🧪🌎

This shouldn't be a surprise, but according to researchers from the Max Planck Institute and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, extreme climate events (heavy rainfall, droughts) disrupt the soil's natural purification capacity and threaten groundwater quality. www.uni-jena.de/en/295196/gr...

The proposed EU Forest Monitoring Framework was discussed in the Parliament's Joint Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development last week. The discussion highlighted the importance of integrating nationaI inventories, remote sensing, and ground-based assessments.

Apparently folks think that writing that contains an em dash is a dead giveaway that it's from ChatGPT, which I guess is a sign that most people have never read anything in their lives.

We reduce emissions to reduce long-term damage from climate change. We adapt to reduce near-term damage from climate change. New open access paper discussing how emissions mitigation and climate adaptation are complementary approaches to reducing climate damage: www.nature.com/articles/s43...

Little progress towards a formal proposal for the EU's 2040 target is expected under the Polish presidency due to the national situation. This is despite Tusk's earlier expression of support for a 90% reduction target back in January 2024. table.media/en/europe/fe...

This is very, very important. While the food system contributes about 22-34% of the world’s greenhouse gases — it only gets about 2.5-3% of the climate funding. And most of that food system climate funding goes to the wrong solutions. futureoffood.org/wp-content/u...

Investigation by Deutsche Welle finds that environmental authorities in DE approved fake carbon credit projects in China which did not meet the legal requirements of a specialised carbon scheme. Such credits were utilised by investors such as Shell, Exxon, Total, and BP. www.dw.com/en/how-a-chi...

This is insane. Drax will log forests to provide 1 million tons of woody biomass a year to power a plant that will make 30 million gallons of "sustainable aviation fuel" each year, enough to power "5,000 carbon-neutral long-haul flights annually." The average number of flights *per day* is 101,480.

Of one-fifth of the carbon credit volume issued to date, almost 1 billion tons of CO2e, less than 16% of the carbon credits issued to the investigated projects were estimated to constitute real emission reductions. 🤡 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The overhyping of regenerative grazing as a climate solution needs to end. While it has some other benefits, regenerative grazing pales as a climate solution compared to shifting diets and reducing food waste. The hype is not helping anything. drawdown.org/index.php/in...
