This issue has blocked multiple teams and gotten VPs involved - but because I'm doing it alongside my oncall manager and the service POC i have witnesses to prove that a) i am working as hard as possible and b) it's not as simple as "just do xyz"

As juniors, we want to be scrappy - which is great!
But sometimes the scrappy/fast thing to do is to pull someone in

It took me, my oncall manager, and a service POC all day until 9PM to resolve the issue
Doing it by myself would have been impossible AND my team would have been like "what's taking her so long?"

I assumed an issue I was working on was easy and the problem was me,
Turns out the issue was COMPLEX AF (imo) and if I had struggled in silence, my team wouldn't have understood

If you burn down a forest, you don't miss out on lumber for just that season. You have to replant all the trees, nurture them, and wait for them to grow.
The science and research budget cuts happening now are wanton, senseless arson. Recovery, if it ever happens, will take generations.

i do slack huddle people A LOT but nothing beats walking up to someone's desk

yep - many companies aren't even hiring interns because they're no longer converting to FT

It is supremely funny to me that when we find out that LLMs work better with good docs it’s suddenly worthwhile to write them, while humans were expected to just roll with it

intuitively i believe this to be true, but overall the vibe i'm getting from the industry is that we're overruled

by short term wins i mean the "staff developers aren't going to take a productivity L when the W is so easily within reach" decisions that are made everyday
i don't have predictions on what the industry will look like, but i understand incentive
so, i mourn for my peers

and then the whole "i'm not gonna take a productivity L to teach"
like, i get it
i do
but jfc - i generally thought we understood eating your young was a bad thing

my comment isn't a rebuttal. and i understand you don't have an incentive to teach 🤷🏿♀️
just commenting on what we're sacrificing at the altar of Short Term Wins

as an experienced eng, the work is "tedious"
as a junior, it's CHALLENGING
we do not yet have the experience to view this work as tedious
this is all new for us
comment in response to
post
and then on top of this, we have the people who have been in the industry for forever telling us " just use AI "
and like... i'm not against using AI
but using AI as an experienced eng is a very different experience from using AI as a junior

and so when someone says "why is this broken?" i can give a confident answer
but here's the other thing - doing that has a cost: time
we're expected to do everything in little time and also be an expert when everything breaks down
it's..... a lot

for example, i had the noisiest oncall this week
but i felt on top of things because i *understand* how our systems work
because i took *time* to understand how the system works,
and have pored over the codebase repeatedly, and made my own additions

my favorite part about this song is a man spits the most basic "learn spanish in 12 days" game and she responds "oh baby when you talk like that..." 🥵🥵🥵

Except it's been forever since I've actually had to understand how to write SQL queries so that part was a bit hard 🫣
(and yes I did ask ChatGPT)
