Beyond cowardly, it's a direct assault on science. I hope @chanzuckerberg.bsky.social is ashamed of themselves. They know full well what's happening at the NIH and that people are going to be more desperate than ever for funding.

I’m seeing an awful lot of posts from people on Bluesky responding to despairing scientists with the words “please keep going, the world needs you”. Scientists cannot keep going if we can’t keep a roof over our heads and our mouths fed.

As we explained, the real drivers of waste in the budget are in precisely the areas Musk was poised to ignore. prospect.org/economy/2025...

Goodnight friends. We end today with this quote for ourselves and for our new secretary of HHS.

We are hearing that there is a meeting of all NIH IC directors happening now. We are also hearing, from several sources, rumors about director and assistant director level removals coming soon. The impact of this wld be enormous. IC directors have all grantmaking authority for each institute. 🧪

RFK Jr was confirmed. There is a lesson here for the future. The only chance that science had to stop RFK was a public relations strategy—to mobilize enough of the public that people not paying attention to politics would learn that he is a disaster. We failed at that. Let’s fix it and do better. 🧪

Elon Musk to reporter: “We post our actions to the DOGE website. All of our actions are maximally transparent. I don’t know of a case where an organization has been more transparent than the DOGE organization.” Here’s the doge.gov website IN ITS ENTIRETY. It’s literally a blank page!

Yes. Also, NIH itself has stopped recruitment of PhD students, postbacs, and postdocs at all its campuses. The nat'l recruitment cycle is closing, everyone will be done soon. It's already a lost year of talent coming in to do great science at NIH. Damage to 🧪 is real. (Story linked below, see 🧵.)

Happy International Day of Women in Science. The National Science Foundation’s list of flagged words includes both “Women” and “Female.”

It's more important than ever for people/researchers in the states that voted for Trump to START SCREAMING. They are not taking care of you. Even if you have a MAGA rep, CALL THEM.

If University of Iowa can’t afford NIH 15% indirect rates then no one in California, NY, Fla or Pennsylvania can

If the White House decides it can defy the will of the courts, then the people must defy the will of the White House.

This energy.

As people are trying to understand how courts enforce their orders, this DOJ Org Chart may come in handy. The courts don’t have their own enforcement agency. The US Marshal’s Service is part of DOJ.

Good morning, the NIH supports 25,181 active projects on cancer.

Chris Murphy is out there being an ideal democrat.

Gene editing technology began by people studying salt marshes. Ozempic began by folks studying the venom of Gila Monsters. Support for basic science has empowered us to understand our world. Tethering it to applications health has transformed and saved countless lives.

The U.S. has had probably the best university system in the world since the late 1940s; government investments (state and federal) drove that success. That may have changed overnight. 🧵🧪

Without even considering how science is conducted internationally through collaborations and building on published results, the attacks on the NIH also affect researchers worldwide directly. Here's a list of active NIH projects in Australia. reporter.nih.gov/search/ML4zQ...

At these bleak times when the intent seems to be to cripple NIH-funded research, a reminder that NIH funding sustains the economy and creates jobs “In fiscal year 2023, NIH funding generated an estimated $92.89 billion in economic activity.” www.nih.gov/about-nih/wh...

On changes to #NIH indirect rates, there is a law in place that prohibits NIH from making such changes without the approval of Congress. See Division D, Title II Section 224 of The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law No: 118-47) grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Trump tried to lower NIH indirect rates in his 2017 budget and that failed to pass. This is a reminder that everything he tried to do through legal means in the first term will be attempted again through illegal means. He will only succeed if we let him.

Good morning, just a reminder that nearly any major medical advance since WW2 has some roots in NIH funding. @warren.senate.gov @markey.senate.gov @pressley.house.gov

It will also devastate biomedical research worldwide. American research is integral to the worldwide progression of medical science. This also affects future scientists and medical doctors. If the departments suddenly have huge holes in the budget, they can't admit students.

Another assault on US competitiveness at a time when biomedicine is roaring with innovation, an own-goal in a high-stakes international tournament. Of course the real losers are American people needing medicines and cures. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

Weak men cannot compromise. Weak men cannot build consensus. Weak men think that leadership means force. Weak men build nothing that lasts.

NIH doesn’t just support infectious disease research—it drives breakthroughs in cancer, childhood diseases, heart disease, diabetes & more. Thanks to NIH, we have: 💉 Cancer immunotherapy ❤️ Cholesterol-lowering statins 🩸 Insulin for diabetes Investing in NIH = investing in life-saving discoveries.

WOW! Cory Booker isn't holding back! "There can be no bystanders in this fight. It is time that we understand the only thing necessary for wrong to triumph is for right to do nothing, for right to be silent." 🤘🔥 #DemocracyNotDictatorship

STOP PRE-COMPLYING

What fresh new hell awaits us today, scientists?

Oh good, this will save us about 0.03% of the budget. Wow man, look at these guys saving the taxpayer's dime.
