While technology has allowed trains in the rest of the world to get faster and faster, neglect has allowed the trains in Canada to slow to a crawl and become effectively unusable except by those willing to punish themselves to uphold a principle.

And to ensure they have strong unions to protect their workers' rights.

But also noraloreto.substack.com/p/stop-lying... And also breachmedia.ca/dont-count-o... Their commentary on voter intention of conservatives vs other was noteworthy.

Thank you for showing leadership by stepping aside after a long and venerable career to make room for a new voice. And thank you for throwing your support behind that new candidate.

Ever since first reading the CBC article about ghost creeks then going on the Lenten walks, I long for GWL to jackhammer up their parking lot and restore Colony Creek on their lot. I think about it every time I bike past.

"a distraction from what we are trying to do"? Or an demonstration of why 'what you're trying to do' is crucially important in this moment?

Every time I see a parked Tesla, I kick myself that I haven't printed out some handbills with a link to the Tech Won't Save Us episode with Ed Niedermeyer to tuck under their windshield wiper and encourage them to have a listen and rethink their choices.

Every mention of the busy, dangerous highway to Gimli at peak times... :( Don't widen the highway: bring back the train! The tracks are still there.

"help the market build better"? Isn't the most reliable way to ensure there is affordable housing for people in the lowest income brackets to have government & nonprofits manage social housing? Not that they manage it well but better than leaving it to market which is always extracting profit.

The pressures the middle class face can be better addressed by collecting tax revenue to improve health care, education, support a green energy transition, etc., than $100 extra dollars in their pocket.

uh oh. If you have to go with studs on one wheel only, always put the studs on the front. If your rear wheel slips, you can often recover. if your front wheel slips, you're going down.

"when you are stuck on a bus in traffic." If only. Buses are surely stuck in traffic but if only more Winnipeggers were on them, they might have a better view on why spending millions on extending CP and widening Kenaston is the wrong tactic.

Exactly. Strong salaries are more useful to ordinary Canadians than tax cuts are.

It also looks like tending to workers' rights. Why on earth did Canada Post workers have to strike to get their demands considered? And why were they mandated back to work without really addressing those demands? Did the NDP have their backs?

Looking out for the middle class (& lower income who really need it) doesn't mean giving a bit of pocket change. It means addressing growing income inequality. It means heavily taxing the wealthiest (who can certainly afford to part with more $) to ensure strong health care, education, etc.

Carbrains may cite $ of installing bike lanes as a reason to oppose. Obviously, they are not comparing against $ for a similar length of roadway. But they are also not comparing against $ shelled out to repair infrastructure damaged by speeding vehicles. The tax base just has to eat those costs.

In 1933, amidst a full-scale economic meltdown, Frances Perkins traded a fireman's net with a social safety net: unemployment insurance, health insurance, old-age insurance, a 40-hour work week, a minimum wage, and abolition of child labor. FDR asked: But can it be done? She vowed to find out. 1/n

The skills it takes to win a campaign (win arguments, wield charisma, etc.) are basically the opposite of what it takes to govern well (listen deeply, collaborate, negotiate).

Obviously the wanton destruction of human lives is the foremost concern about what Israel is doing in Gaza but I wish folks were also saying that war (e.g., bombing) is egregiously bad for the environment and unnecessarily hurtling us even faster toward climate devastation. Ditto Russia & Ukraine.

I wish that candidates from the party that just held government were not allowed to make any new promises but only campaign on what they actually accomplished or were in process of doing in office

The man has no imagination. He can only accuse people of the things he himself would do. Every insult he throws at someone else is a reflection of his own (lack of) character.

This is lovely. Why would anyone fly when they could travel like this? Wake up, North America!
comment in response to post
A huge number of those trips could be by train if North American hadn't abandoned building and maintaining its rail network. And all of those trips would be a lot more pleasant.

Carbon capture is total bullsh*t anyway so if that's their best sustainability claim, they are charlatans and posers even before they agreed to remove bike lanes.
comment in response to post
Are you actually taking the train? That would be wonderful! Passenger rail in Canada needs some serious love, some serious attention and some serious transformation. Yes, there's a lot going on, but one is the climate crisis and viable passenger rail is a mitigation.

It's pretty offensive to Irish folk for the photo headlining a story about St. Patrick's day to be of a member of the British Royal Family. They don't represent Ireland.

Will every city councillor be gifted a copy and encouraged to arrange a Q&A with the author once they finish it?

I'm assuming, perhaps incorrectly, that what they stream at some point will be or has been aired on tv also.
comment in response to post
Wouldn't it be because they cut the movie or show with commercial breaks and to be a certain # of seconds long for airing on tv? And then they just use those versions on Gem too, minus the commercials for premium users?
comment in response to post
Yes! To everyone who says we can't have trains or intercity buses because Canada is too big and spread out, please note we used to have better options than we can even dream of today -- and with a lower population than now. Mass transit IS possible.
comment in response to post
Folks who ride the bus know it's coming. I'm just concerned the target audience (new bus riders) have no idea and may never clue in. How many event confirmation emails have parking instructions? How many list bus route #s & directions from the stop? We need a massive shift in thinking abt transpo.
comment in response to post
You transit folks have spent years of your lives trying to make this better for all of Winnipeg. The city's comms department is letting you down by not shouting from the rooftops until it all begins that the new transit master plan is *for all Winnipeggers* to ride the bus.
comment in response to post
this is huge! to only now, only upon nudging, have this one web page is pretty underwhelming? The campaign should be comprehensive, in your face, everywhere you look? Specifically, it should say "this new bus system is FOR YOU. Look at the maps. Learn the routes. PLAN TO RIDE THEM."
comment in response to post
I've been thinking about this. I pay a ridiculous amount of attention to what's going on at C o W, so I'm aware there's a new transit system coming out. It does get mentioned in council meetings, kind of off hand. but...

And to cycle back to health care, it's not just that it's nice not to go bankrupt due to a broken leg, but also that it's a relief to live in a society that acknowledges we are all vulnerable in varying stages and commits collectively to ensuring we're taken care of in those moments. 3/3
