I remember crying when I read the headline on the left in 2010 - seeing it splayed out in black and white in my own school paper made it seem so real. Once again, the headline on the right this week made everything seem so real, and I ~may~ have cried again, albeit for very different reasons.

Some of my favorite feedback about this film has been from people in prison:

This is a great backgrounder on the wildcat strike roiling New York prisons right now: nysfocus.com/2025/02/20/b...

Update on this story from a few days ago: Lawyers for the county made good on their threat by sending a letter to the appeals court saying that the COC members who filed the legal brief were not authorized to represent the COC www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

NEW: Mitch McConnell announces he will retire, ending his four-decade Senate career “Representing our commonwealth has been the honor of my lifetime. I will not seek this honor an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last.” www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...

The Los Angeles jails just posted their 9th in-custody death for this calendar year:

I heartily recommend this film.

If you're in LA, one more chance to see our Oscar-nominated short doc, I Am Ready Warden, at the Academy Museum on Sunday! Tickets here: www.academymuseum.org/en/programs/...

New — Edward "Big Balls" Coristine of DOGE now has digital access to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), an agency source has confirmed to me.

SCOOP: On his second day as HHS secretary, RFK Jr., the onetime environmentalist, killed climate change programs at NIH that research and prepare for the health effects of extreme weather and a warming planet. This is not going to make Americans healthy. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

This place is so pretty when it’s not on fire

SCOOP: A key member of the Civilian Oversight Commission which oversees LASD has resigned after he says the county's lawyers tried to block the commission from filing a legal brief detailing oversight concerns in a high-profile criminal case. www.latimes.com/california/s...

"breaking news" has become such a neat little pun because it used to just mean that news was breaking but now it also conveniently tends to mean there is news about yet another thing that is breaking

Seen in Brooklyn this AM: an egged cybertruck with a bag of dogshit and also unbagged dogshit

Panama’s security minister "told reporters the migrants were not 'detained' by the Panamanian government but rather 'are under our protection'"... ... one of the detained people "sent a text message saying that the authorities were confiscating all phones. Her last words: 'Please try to help us.'"

Sweet jesus why

On the upside, if you prefer not to live this timeline is great because there are so many ways to die and they are becoming much more accessible (whether you want that or not)

The accelerationist belief that if things get bad enough, then things will start to get better is quite something to see in the wild. It’s wrong though. Historically, misery creates more misery and is visited on the most marginalized in ever intensifying cycles of horror.

NEW - The IRS is expecting a "purge" today of probationary employees, agency sources tell me. In a video posted last night, a National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) chapter president warned staff to download all their documents ASAP because other agencies only gave workers one hour to leave.

Most people don't know this but Ancient Rome was fully remote until Julius Caesar implemented a return to office program and well you know what happened next

SCOOP: Trump administration has been evaluating the costs of destroying or disposing of tens of millions of coronavirus tests that would otherwise be provided free to Americans. My story w/ Carolyn Y. Johnson. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

The current LA sheriff, Robert Luna, sent out this department wide email in response to accusations - many by the former sheriff who Luna defeated in 2022 - that he had asked the feds to consider prosecuting one of his own deputies. Sheriff Luna says here he did not do that:

The Times spoke to people being trapped inside a Panama hotel after deportation from the US and the individual stories of horror are almost too much to bear www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/w...

"When I started this, didn’t have a strong objection to the death penalty... But in looking closely at each of these cases I see very troubling signs that make me think that the moral authority to impose an extreme penalty like this is just not available." www.texasstandard.org/stories/texa...

The FDIC fired its probationary employees tonight. It's unclear just how many people are affected, but according to the DOGE website there were 513 agency employees with less than a year of experience. news.bloomberglaw.com/banking-law/...

Elon had the FDA employees who were reviewing his brain implant company fired: www.yahoo.com/news/fda-sta...

This is why you fight these cowards. The moment you stand up to them, they crumble. Homan has nothing. The Fourth Amendment is clear and I am well within my duties to educate people of their rights. He can threaten me with jail and call names all he wants. He’s got nothing else.

The Post canceling Common Cause's "Fire Musk" ad saved the org $115,000 and handed them maybe more than that in free coverage. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/17/b...

Really excited to see where this artistic progression goes next

I was going to upload a fire video of @keribla.bsky.social talking about the leaked ICE/BOP memo she obtained, but BlueSky won’t let me. So head over to TikTok instead. www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8YQarw3/

Not to worry folks, DOGE operatives are now asking for access to your individual tax returns ... www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

What a change from the game in 2023 where Canadian fans stepped in to sing the Star Spangled Banner when there was a problem with the sound. So infuriating to see a once very friendly relationship soured by the actions of a handful of people with too much power.
