Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

That our biggest newspaper chain is foreign owned was probably never a good idea. But as we face an erratic US president it becomes more urgent to ask: If Postmedia needed to choose between what’s good for its American owners and what’s good for Canada, what would they choose? How would we know?

Guess what - our Science Moms climate ad made this top ten best (upcoming) Super Bowl ads list! The only nonprofit ad on the list! Warning: do not watch without a tissue www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/a...

Ontario election projection has been updated. The Liberals are ticking up in the vote, but it isn't helping them in the seat count. PCs still projected to win a massive majority. www.thewrit.ca/p/ontario-el...

Let’s be 💯 clear. Trump absolutely wants our water, energy, forests, Arctic, farmland, vast size. We’re an amazing real estate deal to him. What he doesn’t get is that the majority of Canadians are repulsed at idea being the 51st state. Time to stand up for 🇨🇦 & build our great nation! #TeamCanada

Looks like a good successor to the Librem 5 (and pinephone). Full day battery life reported, and waydroid mostly working for Android app compatibility, with microg built in. Nice.

Interesting episode. We need to stop allowing the con to continue. --- Living Planet: Deep Dive: The battle to ban fossil fuel advertising Episode webpage: www.dw.com/en/deep-dive... Media file: dts.podtrac.com/redirect.mp3...

My 2025 hobby is helping my pals de-centre tech from their lives. Acquire CDs, records, DVDs, paper books, reference books, magazines, dictionaries, etc. Go to the library! Going analog is a small way to stop relying on tech bro monsters & helps preserve knowledge they're literally deleting.

I stopped by the liquor store to say farewell to the massive selection of Kentucky bourbon on the shelves. We are the number one export market for Kentucky spirits. On Tuesday, all American booze is being pulled off the shelves. We will drink Canadian whiskey. True. North. Strong. Free of bourbon.

We are now over 20,000 strong. I need every proud and determined Canadian to reach out to their family, friends, colleagues to sign the pledge for Canada. Each one reach one. Each one teach one. Donald will not break us. True. North. Strong. Free #strongasfuck actionnetwork.org/petitions/pl...

Only good thing about the past few hours: Canadians are taking their flag back from the fringe who thought they could make it a symbol for their small and backward ideas.

Canada won’t bow down to a bully. President Trump thinks we’re pushovers. He doesn’t know Canadians. We will stand up for our country. We will stand united. We will get stronger. Together. - Mark Carney #TeamCanada ❤️🇨🇦

Library tip: need a place to study? To hang out? To rest? Visit your local library. Libraries are one of the few true third spaces left where you aren't expected to spend money while there. Enjoy some quiet time surrounded by books and community. #booksky 📚💙 #libsky

Hrm. Got a notification about new "memories" from Snapchat, and opening them showed that it had scraped my old photos (not provided to them) without consent and categorized them. That's creepy and abusive. Uninstalled. Don't use #snapchat

For three years, I've been grilling Ford and his Conservatives on their personal phone records and "accidental" data wipes. Each time, they gave excuse after excuse, but I never gave up. You deserve better than a Premier who doesn't want you to know who he's talking to or what he's saying.

Amazon Canada says it is closing all seven of its warehouses in Quebec over the next two months. The online retailer says 1,700 permanent employees in the province will be laid off, as will 250 temporary workers.

The effect on household CO2 of turning on a natural gas oven to bake cookies for 15 minutes is pretty severe. Guideline is to stay below 1000ppm, and the oven forces it up to 1800 quickly then takes hours to return to about 1000. Need an exhaust fan that moves more air. Electric oven next time.

Took another stab at getting the TP-Link Kasa smart plugs (HS103) to work with #homeassistant. Failed again. Regret buying these. Seems TP-Link killed local support and their cloud setup is painful. Will try the ikea Inspelning and Tretakt ones next

Offer of source code right on the box. I like it. Excited to try out the OpenWrt One one.openwrt.org #openwrt #openwrtone

People have asked me why I want @markcarney.bsky.social to run for Liberal leader. Check out his interview with Jon Stewart where he makes a few jokes but speaks seriously about Canada (we will never become a part of the US!) Trump, Poilievre, the economy & climate. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zs8S...

I welcome #BlueSky and other ethical platforms to sign the RespectfulPlatforms.org pledge!

To everyone who's quitting Zuck's platforms: If you want to replace Instagram, try pixelfed.social It's an ad-free, community-owned photo sharing social app. If you have a Pixelfed account already, leave your username below so I can follow you ☺️ #Meta #Facebook #Insta #Instagram #Zuckerberg

CONFIRMED: Facebook has *banned* anyone from linking to Pixelfed. #MetaBlockingPixelfed I just tried posting a message on Facebook that reads: "Anyone here using Pixelfed?" with a link to Pixelfed.Social Within *seconds* I got a post saying my post was banned. Screenshots below.

Trying to setup a TCL Google TV for a friend using Google Home on their iPhone, and it's an exercise in frustration. Sees the TV but connection fails when trying to setup. Google help isn't helpful at all and there's no recourse. Will avoid Google TVs in the future. Expensive garbage. Shitty UX.

I fear there is deep truth here.

"Pierre Poilievre is still talking in slogans and you cannot govern in slogans, and I am really worried that he will really get eaten alive by Donald Trump." -former 🇨🇦 environment minister Catherine McKenna @cathmckenna.bsky.social #CdnPoli

There's a forgotten history that should serve as a warning — wildfire isn’t unique to the West. Now the warming climate is increasing the risk of major wildfires across America. And more people are moving to fire-prone areas without realizing the danger.

It seems a lot of Americans can't conceive of why Canadians are not so eager to join the Union. I'll give you a few reasons: - We love our country, just like you love yours. Things can always be better, but this will always be our home and native land.

Playing with @ente.io on Android (available in F-Droid). On-device face recognition with end-to-end encryption is a really nice feature. After feeding it one folder of photos it didn't seem to do anything; had to go to settings "General > Advanced > Machine Learning" and turn on. Now indexing 🤞

I don't want my fridge to have a camera or Wi-Fi. I don't want my dishwasher to be smart. I don't want my washing machine to text me. In fact, I kinda miss knobs and dials and knowing big appliances would last 20 years and could still be repaired.

Richard Brody on why DVD owners shouldn’t throw out their collections just yet.

No matter what happens with the Canadian Federal election, one thing will be true — a significant % of Canadian voters & media will have been successfully manipulated to oppose a beneficial carbon pricing approach that was either revenue-neutral or financially beneficial to almost all Canadians…1/2
