AP NEWS 4/14/25 "The Republican administration’s deep cost-cutting effort across the federal government has led the NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES to cancel its grants for state humanities councils" apnews.com/article/fede...

The National History Day contest equips students w/ skills in historical research, communication, project management, & critical thinking. National History Day got DOGEd, losing $336,000 in funded thru next year. $137,000 can fund the contest this year. They’re taking donations. NHD.org/donate

I had the chance to see the famous “unfinished portrait” of FDR before speaking in Warm Springs today. I’m reminded that the America FDR fought for remains unfinished & we must continue working to build a country that lives up to our highest ideals.

On the road back from Warm Springs after a great visit to FDR’s Little White House. FDR came here for his own healing & saw the healing that needed to be done for others. I’m taking the spirit of Warm Springs back with me to Washington with a determination to build on FDR’s unfinished legacy.

I should add this is a program long supported by the NEH. The loss Chris refers to is grant funding from the endowment.

Margaret Renkl, Opinion | Why DOGE Slashed the National Endowment for the Humanities – The New York Times By Margaret Renkl     Ms. Renkl, a contributing Opinion writer, reports from Nashville on flora, fauna, politics and culture in the American South. "Tim Henderson was up late last Wednesday…

Great perspective and insight into what the decimation of NEH does on the ground. www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...

National History Day, a program that I absolutely adore & respect, and which I spent nearly half of my career leading at a previous school, is the latest organization that is under attack from the current White House administration.

Some Republicans have been trying to kill the NEH for 30 years, but they got stuck on the idea that all legislative Powers shall be vested in a Congress of the United States. How quaint.

The AHA has released a statement condemning the evisceration of the National Endowment for the Humanities. “This frontal attack on the nation’s public culture is unpatriotic, anti-American, and unjustified.” 🗃️

"Late last night, all humanities councils received emails and letters ... notifying them that all [NEH] awarded grants—including their 5-year General Operating Grants and other program-specific awards—were canceled in their entirety, effective April 1." www.statehumanities.org/action-alert... 🗃️

Funding (and esteem) for the Humanities has been destroyed brick-by-brick over the last decade, with the attack on the NEH this week an end point more than a beginning. This may be new-ish for our colleagues in the sciences, but I hope we learn to fight alongside each other.

URGENT: Take Action to Defend the NEH To the Members of the Medieval Academy of America: As a service to our members, we will occasionally share with you calls to action from organizations with whom we are affiliated. www.themedievalacademyblog.org/urgent-take-...

From #AHAPerspectives in 2021: "If we don’t pay attention to history museums and historic sites as they lead the charge toward responsive, urgent, civic-oriented work, we miss out on key resources for our lives, our communities, and our nation," warns Caroline Klibanoff. 🗃️

URGENT ACTION ALERT: Save the NEH On March 31, 2025, we learned DOGE is targeting the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Let your Members of Congress know that you support the NEH and its programs! p2a.co/DdtlGIT

"Cutting NEH funding directly harms communities in every state and contributes to the destruction of our shared cultural heritage. Cutting NEH staff who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their positions guts the NEH itself."

The AHA has released a statement in support of the Smithsonian Institution, the target of the recent EO, “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” This order “egregiously misrepresents the work of the Smithsonian Institution” and “completely misconstrues the nature of historical work.” 🗃️

This is the result of decades of civic poisoning by Fox News and right-wing echo chambers and channels.

The 1% evade $163B in taxes per year. Tesla paid $0 in federal income taxes from 2018 - 2022 & 2024. Billionaires can write off the cost of their private jets and yachts. While undocumented immigrants paid $96B in taxes in 2022. The more you look into it, the crazier it gets.

“I don’t want to minimize the cruelty or pain being inflicted by Trump and his cronies, but this week has also revealed a foolishness — a mindless obtuseness — in Trump and this regime that defies belief.” @rbreich.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/robertre...

Attention all traditional American allies: Regardless of the current hostility by the current administration, the bulk of America considers you an ally and values your friendship.

I've quoted this passage from Trump -- where he states his intent to cause riots and US economic collapse -- so many times. He flat-out announced it on Fox News in February 2014. In my book HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT I quote my own 2016 essay warning of his plan: www.hidinginplainsightbook.com

It's simple. Everyone in the US enjoys the protections of the Constitution - even visitors. So if someone commits a crime here, you give them due process here. You charge them here, try them here, and sentence them here. You don't deport them to an offshore torture prison.

@jgrossman.bsky.social on @npr.org about the EO targeting the Smithsonian: "It misrepresents the work of the Smithsonian, which is one of the great research institutions in the world, arguing that the Smithsonian somehow misleads people, somehow is unpatriotic...That is simply not true." 🗃️

Nearly every Republican in the Senate voted to overturn a Biden Admin rule that limited bank overdraft fees to $5. This rule, initially established by the now gutted CFPB, was expected to save consumers $5 billion annually. The GOP is the party of junk fees.

Our loss is Canada’s gain. @timothysnyder.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p...

AHA executive director James Grossman was quoted in the NYT on the EO targeting the Smithsonian Institution. Grossman said the order “egregiously misrepresents the work of the Smithsonian” and that “the historical scholarship in the Smithsonian is careful, honest and based on historical evidence.” 🗃️

The AHA has released a statement condemning "the dismantling of federal departments and agencies through the indiscriminate termination of federal employees and elimination of programs, including historical offices.” 🗃️

Based on some pretty shallow quick-takes from media outlets, the bigger impact is getting missed in the focus on the Smithsonian. It’s also the entire Department of the Interior, which means every single national park, battlefield and site in the entire country.

Goldberg did what he did with truthful precision and patriotic concern, and of course with the foreknowledge that he would be slandered by high officials.

This is painful, and saddening, and embarrassing. I feel like we're losing a member of the family - and for no good reason other than that some Americans wanted another season of the worst reality TV show in history.

Yesterday, I fondly remembered my dear friend Leonard Nimoy, who would have turned 94. His legacy lives on in our hearts. Just days ago, Bill Shatner celebrated his 94th birthday — wishing him continued health and happiness. Live long and prosper, my friends.

THREAD: Trump just signed an EO about voter registration, but in 2023 the super-conservative Chief Judge Pryor in the 11th Circuit penned an opinion as to why Mark Meadows (and the president) have no role in supervising state elections, and therefore, cannot have his case moved to federal court. 1/

As an alum of the Justice Department unit that reviews EOs for form & legality--the Office of Legal Counsel--I've been watching the EOs & memoranda as they came out. What struck me most is the centralization of control and access. Things are happening so quickly that many haven't realized it yet.1/x

I had the pleasure of welcoming Chair Lowe to my campus a couple years ago. Outstanding leader…Yet another blow…

A leaked Wall Street memo confirms that privatizing the Post Office would mean higher prices, mass layoffs, and worse service — especially for rural America.
