The UK's anti-protest laws pre-legitimise far right authoritarianism. Labour must repeal them now. My column today. www.theguardian.com/global/comme...

Discovered that the reason my fridge was too cold, and kept burning my veggies, is that the dial from 0 to 5 that I assumed represented the power level is a literal temperature gauge. So when I was desperately trying to turn it down, I was turning it to zero. I've owned this fridge for 15 years.

#FridayReads Mary Olivier: A Life by May Sinclair. This modernist, autobiographical novel follows a Victorian girl growing up as the youngest child in a family of boys, and gradually understanding that she's less valued and won't have the same opportunities as her brothers.

Lisa Nandy announces £270m fund for UK’s ‘crumbling’ cultural infrastructure

Eureka is releasing a collection of East German sci-fi films as part of its Masters of Cinema series. Eastern Bloc sci-fi has a reputation for being innovative, and for political reasons was often well funded and supported. Mach es so! eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/strang...

Just been looking at a book called "If I Had a Crocodile" and I just don't think that's the way a friendship between a human child and a crocodile would really pan out.

My new book is out today. It’s rather lovely. #WomansHour www.penguin.co.uk/books/436987...

Trump could have pushed for an end to the war in Ukraine without becoming actively hostile to Ukraine. Instead, he has imbibed Putin’s lies. Have written about the emergence of a new US/Russia axis, where it comes from and the staggering implications for Europe. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

A number of prominent UK Conservatives' statements about Donald Trump resemble one of those news stories that begins with a magazine feature about a new age mystic who believes he can talk to bears and ends with a newspaper article about a new age mystic being mauled to death by bears.

Pretty disturbed by some of the Kremlin framing on the Trump talks being bought by parts of the media worldwide. It’s as if the genesis of the war is entirely forgotten. This isn’t a conflict which needs mediation. It was an unprovoked act of aggression. It could end tomorrow if Putin just withdrew.

Parents regularly ask me “How do I get my child to read?” I ask them “How much do you read in front of your kids?” My parents read a lot in front of me. One of the books on my Dad’s bookshelf was this one. I vaguely remember him telling me about it when I asked. Finally got round to reading it…

Potential safety concerns to be aware of if you're planning to travel to the US.

I don't know how George Mackay Brown's copy of Yeats ended up in a charity shop in Ely, but I'll take it as one of those periodic gifts from the universe.

Really great collection of some of the most useful activist guides, from community responses to the far right and anti-fascist citizen intelligence, to issues for schools and libraries, to street politics, digital security and first aid. Share widely.
