A very early Cybergoth spotted in Japan in 1997!!!

A pity; all their respirators and masks would come in handy during Covid!

Sorry - this was the piece that made the Magritte connection:

The most interesting bit being someone spotting an almost identical tower in The Empire of Light, by Magritte, thus circling immediately back to JAPANESE CYBERPUNK and 光の帝国
(why am I like this?)

Yeah, see those are the references I'm missing. Rorschach just reminded me of a certain kind of Super-Logical Right Wing Comics Guy, without knowing who it was satirising

Yes, this has long been memeified!

The only other thing of his that I've read was From Hell (which I barely remember at all, apart from vague London psychogeography, but i might be conflating it with another book).
I started reading manga again with Ito Junji but I absolutely refuse to become obsessed with Japanese comics! 🤣

The singer's voice is quite divisive if I recall recorrectly, but I used to love them

It’s hard to be a synth wizard when you can only play 2-finger hunt and peck keyboards!
But oh my GOD his light-up rainbow MIDI guitar thing?!? So beautiful! 😍

(This poor man is discovering that it is rather more difficult to play guitar in a cape than a synth - he keeps adjusting it awkwardly while guitarring!)

I have never seen anyone try so hard to get my attention in all my life
YOU HAVE IT, IMAI. YOU HAVE MY FULL ATTENTION.

Yes! This is the exact look. There's even a picture of one of them on a playlist here but I'm kind of scared to find out what kind of music they actually listened to (I think it is the 00ntz 00ntz kind)

The irony being "EBM Industrial Cyber Goth" describes a good 2/3 of the collective catalogues of Buck-Tick, Soft Ballet and Schaft but... none of that is on here
It's weird German ladies with green muppet hair and goggles and enormous shoes?

Cranes, however - how on earth do they reckon this is industrial?
Is it the name? (Cranes is a very Industrial-sounding name, despite being on the cusp of shoegaze and goth)

A lot of this stuff is "music that was played at alternative / goth nightclubs in the late 80s / very early 90s" - but that period was really before a lot of the genres got codified? Meat Beat Manifesto is NOT Industrial but was played a lot at those kinds of nights

Interesting and compelling read, but I often had the sense that it was winkingly referencing something (but I was utterly ignorant as to what was being referenced or satirised)
Like if I played you a song and said 'this is a pastiche of Hyperlife' but you'd never heard any music of that genre?

I thought the story was good, the concepts were fantastic & the character development was very interesting. But not knowing what the conventions were (that were being turned upside down) meant that I was often lost - or had a superficial understanding that I was missing something (not knowing what)

Like, one of Soft Ballet's songwriters really wanted to be in Neubauten or Test Dept or something; while the other wanted to be the Pet Shop Boys or Kylie Minogue! Then the singer really really wanted to be Jim Morrison
I know it sounds like it shouldn't work? But it really does!

Yeah, that sounds like you need to get scanned for fibroids! Good luck with the Dr.

You sure it’s not a kidney stone? Same area, much sharper pain, only on one side! Other than that, get checked for fibroids?
Hope you’re feeling better!

I've love to hear what you make of them!
When you are ready for the PVs, most of them are in this playlist. But honestly listen to the music first because the visuals are so good it's distracting

Haha my playlist is nearly 3 hours long! But it gives a good idea of most of their different eras. It's in chronological order so if something doen't thrill you, try skipping to the next album?

Their music is so incredible - but their clothes and their visuals and their aesthetic is also so cool that it's hard to separate out. Maybe I should link you a YouTube playlist of their promo videos, but the visuals are so overwhelming that sometimes they almost distract from the music

Do you have Spotify? I recently made a "favourite tracks" playlist for a survey, which would be a good intro?

It's good to see several female artists near the top again; nature is healing. New releases from FKA Twigs, oklou and Heartworms!

Haha it seems Nüw Idol also did a remix for The Shamen so it's like all my obsessions are converging in time and space
