If America ever had any claim at being great, it was because of programs like these. For a minuscule savings to the federal budget, hundreds of thousands will suffer and die. My contempt for the people who did this knows no bounds, and the sooner we can get them out of power, the better.

“Though there were important Black abolitionists, white abolitionists had for the most part never cultivated a habit or an ethic of listening to those they claimed to help. They believed that they had the power to learn more by simply imagining themselves into other bodies.“ Good post

Pass it on.

Stitch is brilliant and you should hire them. Seriously.

Remember when Ted Cruz couldn't go out for dinner without being hounded by people demanding to know why he was being such an unrepentant dick? That's what Susan Collins needs right now.

“Forty-one U.S. senators could use the filibuster to block most legislation that enables the funding of Musk’s companies. With 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats, and two independents in the Senate, such a push is numerically possible, though politically difficult.“

This entire thread is excellent, but this bit in particular. When I was a grad student, I used to call it "falling into rabbit holes." Some were related to what I was trying to find, but some were just interesting. And I've actually used some of these tangential rabbit holes years later.

“If the CFPB was the size of the CIA, all Americans would be better off.”

hey for anyone who might want to actually own their kindle books instead of renting them, or who might be thinking of switching to kobo etc and will want to convert them to epubs, you now only have one week before amazon kills your ability to download its ebooks www.theverge.com/news/612898/...

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

There’s so much I’ve had to do to conform to society. It would be nice if just once in awhile society would conform to me.

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

Good to see: Unions representing USAID workers are suing Trump, Rubio and the State Department, seeking a halt to the mass removals of USAID workers, which appears to be unlawful in multiple ways and is already having terrible humanitarian consequences around the world:

Contrary to popular belief, Democrats aren't powerless right now. There are parliamentary guerrilla tactics that Senate Democrats can use to slow, stall, and obstruct MAGA at every turn: indivisible.org/reso...

"You can't post your way to liberation!" But writing/storytelling/oratory and the arts have always been part of every freedom movement... Digital writing and art is STILL writing and art. Any other take is just silly.

@mthrjo.bsky.social, reminded of reading your D.Phil. thesis in the Oriel MCR.

Also, there are so many good, hardworking people who work in local politics. Even if you're angry at the people in charge--and believe me, I am--there are plenty of others who are genuinely working to make your communities better. Support them by showing up.

I went to my town's deliberative sessions in preparation for our local election. Turnout was about five times what they usually had, and the 40 cranks who clearly just showed up to yell about how we spend too much on schools and parks got shouted down. Sometimes all you need to do is show up.

Pete Hegseth isn’t DEI. Daniel Penny isn’t DEI. That’s not what DEI is. They’re just grossly unqualified for their jobs and add no value that any replacement legacy job applicant wouldn’t bring. So stop saying “it’s DEI” like it’s a clever commentary on the situation. It’s not.

It is kind of hard to find out who the actual bad actors are and who are just lazy, cynical people who don't want to fight.

This Fiona Apple narrated explainer PSA on how to film (and release footage from, not livestream) ICE arrests is exactly what we need from people with production skills right now and is worth about 3 million celebrity “imagine” covers in terms of survival utility

Dear Canada and Mexico, We’re so, so sorry. — Sane America

There appear to be at least three separately operating heel factions breaking things within the government in wholly different ways right now. There's the Miller-headed immigration one, the DOGE/Elon one, and a Project 2025 OMB one. This dynamic hasn't showed up in mainstream reporting at all.

The entire archive of CDC datasets can be found here. HUGE shoutout to data archivists- this work is important 👏🙌🏻 archive.org/details/2025...

“The symptoms just kept coming and they kept getting worse. And nobody could tell me if they were gonna keep getting worse, if it was gonna eventually plateau." For New Hampshire's long COVID patients, the virus' impact continues. From William Skipworth

I promised some historical background relevant to the implication that "DEI" had played a role in Wednesday's tragic accident in DC. Since today is the 1st day of #BlackHistoryMonth, it's time to lay this out. So, herewith a 🧵 on just what it took to integrate commercial aviation in the 1st place.

If you cannot call it what it is when all in a week: a government removes every mention of a group of people, destroys information about them en masse, bans their discussion in schools, restricts their ability to travel and starts seizing and refusing their official identification, when will you?

On Friday, up to a thousand students at #Arizona State University (ASU) marched on an attempted rally by neo-Nazis who were calling on students to report undocumented people to #ICE. The crowd surrounded the Nazis + flipped their table. itsgoingdown.org/students-shu...
