Aside from mortgage rates and inflation, I'm terrified to spend any money right now until we know where the overall economy is headed. My wife and I would love a little more space but we're staying put with all the uncertainty.

Because they don't have it. Even if you're a W-2 employee, you could have a side hustle or second job as a contracted position. There's a million unknowns.

This is just patently false. If you are anything other than a standard W-2 worker, there is plenty of information that they do not have. The IRS relies on you to give them the correct info that they then review for accuracy.
