The UK's green manufacturing and services sectors offer far higher economic returns than business-as-usual activities. This latest report is consistent with a very large and rapidly growing body of evidence for this.

Ahead of the CCC's seventh carbon budget advice, coming out on Wednesday, here's my chat with Emma Pinchbeck: "[People are] often more ambitious than the government expects,” Pinchbeck said, but they “want clarity about technology choices" www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

He says: “We’re not gonna quit, we’re not gonna surrender, fight fight fight” And then he does a Nazi salute

NEW: Pregnancy became far more dangerous in Texas after the state banned abortion, according to ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis, which found the sepsis rate for women hospitalized as they miscarried in the 2nd trimester shot up by more than 50%. https://propub.li/43487Tj

I argue here we need to follow the science not the whims of politicians. Greenland's value is its ice. Free to republish. Pass it on. Spread the word. We need to bring science and rational thought back into the national dialogue . @us.theconversation.com 💙📚🧪 theconversation.com/greenlands-r...

Even in the most untouched, pristine parts of the world, birds and insects are dying out, fast. And the cause is climate breakdown. How? The finely tuned, interconnected timings are all being disrupted. If larvae or chicks emerge when there's no food, they die. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

We got a message from the university to remove any use of the "DEI", "diversity", "equity", or "inclusion" from all public-facing documents. They said that even "biodiversity" is being flagged by the federal government. We live in the dumbest timeline.

THREAD: New UK govt contract with Drax biomass power plant * 4-yr contract 2027-2031 * £113/MWh (2012 prices – £155 in today's money) * Output cap of 6TWh (<2% of UK supplies, cf recent yrs 12-15TWh) * CfD cost ~£500m/yr * 100% of fuel must be "sustainable", up from 70% 1/5

Excellent to see a policy brief from ONZ, @oxfordsmithschool.bsky.social & Carbon Balance mentioned in this piece by @lararhiannon.bsky.social for @opinion.bloomberg.com: www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti.... The authors argue that any new oil & gas licenses in the UK should meet stricter criteria.

Here's some good news/counterprogramming. In an area of Colombia contaminated with mercury, planting certain trees and shrubs that absorb the toxins -- an approach called phytoremediation -- is really working, and locals can safely fish in the river again [gift link]

Some things I learned from my chat with the CCC's Emma Pinchbeck: 🌳 decarbonization has come a LONG way 💡 electricity needs to be cheaper ⛈️ adaptation deserves more resources 🌞 the public are worried about climate change and well up for action Read @opinion.bloomberg.com

It's RFK hearing day. Don't fall for any attempts to recast his extreme anti-vaccine efforts as something other than they are: a clear and present danger to public health. My latest: www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

From last week: There are a multitude of reasons to doubt the notion that reducing emissions and expanding airports can really go hand in hand @opinion.bloomberg.com www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

Apparently a new runway at Heathrow could create 100,000 jobs. A home retrofit industry: hold my beer. www.pwc.co.uk/press-room/p...

As Reeves talks about sustainable aviation fuel and Heathrow's third runway in her growth speech, I'd like to flag this chart again. The UK's mandate isn't even as forward looking/ambitious as the EU's

It might seem like there's a net zero backlash, but: The CCC finds that the public are more ambitious than the gov expects. They just want clarity about what they’re being asked to do. My v. interesting chat with @elpinchbeck.bsky.social @ @opinion.bloomberg.com www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

I hadn't realised quite how bad this Bill was. As drafted it would essentially prevent us from decarbonising. The incentives on local people to object to development are far stronger than their incentives to act in the best interests of everyone else. But it's not just bad at that. /1

Has anybody actually read this bill? It doesn't seem very good www.theguardian.com/environment/...

“When T trains are delayed, people can at least look into the eyes of the train when it finally arrives, and feel some love and understanding in their hearts…The T doesn’t want to be late…It feels bad being late.” It sounds like Deutsche Bahn should stick some googly eyes on their trains.

Great explanation on how climate change impacts extreme events. It's an intensifier, not a single factor and its interaction with other variables is key www.latimes.com/opinion/stor...

Aviation is growing so fast that the same amount of fossil kerosene may be burned in 2049 as in 2023, even as SAF mandates ramp up @opinion.bloomberg.com Chart via @transenv.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

@mcuban.bsky.social had asked what he could do in the era of the convicted felon Donald Trump. Here's an example. "Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's philanthropy and other U.S. funders said on Thursday they will cover U.S. financial obligations to the UN climate framework…"

Currently flicking between the live images and a few hours ago on Putricia the Corpse Flower. She's definitely opened up a little! What a thrill www.youtube.com/live/mrylcCA...

If you are feeling overwhelmed, I strongly recommend the livestream of the corpse flower at Sydney Botanic Gardens on YouTube. There are currently 1,500 people in chat waiting for a flower to open, and occasionally claiming that it definitely has moved this time. WWTF: We Watch The Flower.

He’s back . And he’s doing exactly what he said he would . Executive orders to expand drilling in the Alaskan wilderness , the guise of a ‘National Energy Emergency’ to slash red tape and regulation for fossil fuel companies , and the withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement .

If it was a storyline in The Thick of It you would say it was unbelievable 🤦🏻‍♀️

This is by far the most wonderful story I've read all week. I'll be linking to it in tomorrow's newsletter. I haven't seen it get too much attention so I'm sharing it here as well. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...

The humble smart meter is key to energy security and decarbonizing the power grid. To achieve a just energy transition, everyone needs one and they all need to work properly. But making that a reality is only becoming more complex free via @opinion.bloomberg.com www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

Seeing the arguments about the LA fires saying "It's climate change" "It's lack of funding" "It's the wildland urban interface" "It's forestry policy" "It's whatever"---That is falling into the trap. Disasters are never one single thing. They are complex. That is why we study them.

COLUMN: Every few years, a craze about unimaginable riches engulfs the commodity industry. The buzz now is Greenland — so large is its mineral wealth that US President Donald Trump wants it. Trouble is, the theory is utter nonsense. @opinion.bloomberg.com www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

#ClimateChange - the normalisation of insanity as #AndiPeters on #Lorraine offers prizes of flights to holidays in the #Maldives - plus a huge BMW petrol car - then segues to Lorraine Kelly interviewing Patsy Palmer on the tragedy of the #LAFires... @georgemonbiot.bsky.social

This is why some in the US are adamant that what went wrong with the LA wildfires were fish and DEI rather than things that would actually have helped but are hard to do (burning less fossil fuels, infrastructure maintenance, better forest management) www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

1. Please read this thread. It could make a difference to your health. Before I went away, I had a strange, persistent tingling in the soles of my feet. When I looked it up, there were some benign explanations, and some alarming ones. I resolved to see the doctor when I returned. 🧵

This will surely have huge repercussions not only economically but socially and culturally. It's really quite sad...

If you’re ever wondering why wildfire smoke is so bad for you it’s because it includes things like “an entire bicycle”

Well done humanity. For it is us who have caused this rapid warming of the planet, and the devastating consequences for people and ecosystems that are so visible today and every day. theconversation.com/my-new-dark-...

Trump will be sentenced this morning in New York for a criminal fraud conviction decided last May. He’ll be a convicted felon when he is inaugurated as president on Jan. 20 — the first Oval Office occupant to have that distinction on his resume. www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...
