Since I’ve been getting this a lot - if you feel like supporting me by buying a jersey or something, I would rather you make a donation to Trans Lifeline or The Trevor Project www.thetrevorproject.org

With another set of news headlines about political elites using “””Roman salutes””” I just want to note that the Nazi salute means “I want to murder your family” and the n-word means “I want to lynch you.” That’s what they mean, they make me righteously angry, and I won’t let anybody minimize them.

If you’ve ever taken the oath to uphold the Constitution, this is the time to live up to it.

So I got this book coming out in February . . . #firstgen #smartgirl

On Feb. 14th I try always to give honor to one of the greatest contributors to American democracy in our nation’s history, Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery, Douglass never knew his actual birthdate, and adopted Feb. 14th as the day. His penetrating insights about our country inspire me daily.

In troubling times, people experiencing high stress or crippling anxiety deal with it in different ways. Some have a therapist, some have a deep breathing exercise & some even have a personal mantra. I have a Mabel.

Make your calls. Go to your town halls. Ask your state and local officials what they are doing under state and local law. Rest. Hydrate. Make soup for the hungry. Don’t let people tell you that you’re doing it wrong. Not a sprint. Not a marathon. A relay. Find your team. Thank you.

The campaign against trans rights is also about stripping away everyone’s protections against discrimination, reviving, as Douglass put it “the moral blindness” of those who “persuade themselves that they are safe, though the rights of others may be struck down.” www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

It really warms my heart to find science "Twitter" on here. I've really been missing everyone!

Most likely a fairly ordinary story in this country circa now, but an extraordinary one in the telling as lived by Patrick Fealey, a former Boston Globe and Reuters journalist and art critic. (ht: @brian-goldstone.bsky.social) www.esquire.com/news-politic...

Bluesky people, for the definitive # of women in US politics, the authority is Center for American Women in Politics at Rutgers University

The AP just called the race in Oregon's 5th Congressional District, and current Oregon State Representative Janelle Bynum (D) will become the first Black woman to represent Oregon in Congress.

Bluesky has passed Threads in daily web visits and is also no. 1 on Apple’s App Store. 🙌

Did you see Usher & friends rollerskating in the Super Bowl halftime show? Fun behind-the-scenes story of a cool Atlanta skating rink. Enjoy this gift link wapo.st/3SLOjh0

Bluesky is officially “open” now (no more invites). So just a reminder to not engage with trolls and bad actors, there is no algorithm here to promote or spread them, replying to them is what puts them on everybody’s timelines. So block and give no oxygen.

“When F. Scott Fitzgerald died in 1940, “The Great Gatsby,” published in 1925, had barely sold 20,000 copies. Then it was selected as an Armed Services Edition, and more than 120,000 copies were distributed, spurring its transformation into a classic.” - NYT, Jennifer Schuessler #books

"X is now an app that forcibly puts abhorrent content into users’ feeds and then rewards financially the people who were the most successful in producing it" Twitter has become the premier destination for hate online. Very sad www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

Every day, I’m asked “what can I do to make a difference?” Most feel frustrated & powerless against the climate crisis, and alarming narratives amplify this. Alongside the grim realities, we need to know what we as individuals and as a society can do—and are doing—to make a difference. Read:

Thanks @taylorlorenz.bsky.social for covering Threads' censoring of Covid, Long Covid and vaccine searches. Censorship doesn't work. Misinfo still gets circulated by code names and other platforms. Tech companies should invest in real solutions like moderation and education.

Interesting if true via Adam Singer, Substack, on creating podcasts: “90% of podcasts don’t get past episode 3. That’s 1.8 million who quit. Of the 200K left, 90% will quit after 20 episodes. That’s another 180K gone. To be in the top 1% of podcasts in the world you only need to publish 21 eps.”

Many people don't understand what a high level of community spread means, so it's very helpful to translate wastewater data into estimated infections like this. 1 in 55 works out to roughly 2-4 people with an active COVID infection in every crowded subway car. Wear a mask.
