4 year old quote of the day. "Babies can only pick up mice. I'm strong and could pick up a whole case of beer!" To be clear, he has not, to my knowledge, ever picked up a case of beer.

once again I have to invoke the specter of Ronald Wilson Reagan, who is in Hell now. under Reagan, the term "government spending" was effectively demonized. fuck you, Reaganite ghouls! spending money, on its people and their needs, is the function of government! public works are good! say so!

The stakes are just too high.

First, they said postponed; now the meeting is canceled. That means no flu shots next year. “'It’s a six-month production cycle,' Dr. Offit said. 'So one can only assume that we’re not picking flu strains this year.'" Fundamentally, that's a form of mass murder. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/u...

Hi Soybean

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F. 18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it. We made this website to tell our story: 18f.org

BREAKING: New restrictions prohibit CDC from publishing with WHO on disease research.

Please read—this is becoming serious!

If you’re at home today, not spending money, and feeling bored, you might be wondering, “What could I do?” Well, task one: you can make random reports on this website: enddei.ed.gov

Have courage Stand up to bullies Be like President Zelenskyy

This is great. (Better put together than my emails and calls to her, though covering some of the same ground I try to cover.)

"The cuts... echo the Silicon Valley mantra of “move fast and break things.” That attitude can work for an app trying to keep users entertained. But when parts of the federal government break — say, health care or safety functions — people can die".

The U.S. government has put up a submission form for reporting schools who teach kids about “DEI.” It accepts file uploads. Internet, you know what to do enddei.ed.gov

i really really want the Minneapolis Police Department to experience budget tieout every year like each & every Minneapolis Public School experiences every fucking spring. the choices we have to make are depraved. if we funded schools like we funded cops, WE WOULDN’T NEED COPS!!

This is your periodic reminder that if you live in Minnesota you have access (no login required) to the full text of the NYT, WaPo, WSJ, AJC, ChiTrib, LA Times, Star Tribune, and much more all the way back to the 80s. All thanks to eLibrary Minnesota. Libraries rule!

I've created a calendar to track advocacy/protest events and meetings in the twin cities. Please feel free to utilize and share. When available, I've listed organizers and links to websites. shorturl.at/3DkKg (1/2)

Hi Soybean!

How we did it: Texas Won’t Study How Its Abortion Ban Impacts Women, So We Did

Musk is pouring $1.5 million into Wisconsin’s upcoming Supreme Court race.

4 year old is anxious about asteroids after learning about the dinosaurs, & I've spent a lot of time reassuring him the chance of the planet being hit by an asteroid is almost nothing, & that we have the technology to handle it if one comes close. In unrelated news: www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/s...

Currently all decisions in my household are put to vote in a tribunal of 20 stuffed cats- but I think the system is rigged because the results always seem to be exactly in line with whatever the 4 year old wants. To be clear- adorable when my preschooler does it. Less adorable in the federal gov.

It's annoying how clearly this is going to play out. They gut the FAA. Therefore, the FAA can't do its job well because it was gutted. Therefore, they say "The FAA sucks, we have to privatize it." which is what Project 2025 wants to do. They're manufacturing the crises for their end goal.

Me: I remember that I loved My Little Ponies when I was your age 4 year old: Oh! Like in that song Pink Pony Club!

The removal of a transgender reference from the National Park Service’s Stonewall website wasn’t done by NPS staff. Elon, care to elaborate?

4 year old: can we play a board game before we go? Me: sure, we have just enough time for one short game 4 year old: great! Here's my 17 stuffed cats. They are all playing too, and need to take individual turns.

Things that happened today: - One of the food shelves my org works with had about half the line it normally does. Staff said that clients (mostly immigrant and non-english speaking) were worried about ICE, and didn't feel safe getting food for their families - another local food shelf just (1/)

4 year old made up a game where Tails the Fox invents robots to protect animals and water from oil pipelines 🤣

Why aren't we rioting in the streets? open.substack.com/pub/robertre...

Remember: The fundamental issue isn’t the size of the government or how to make government more “efficient.” It’s who our government is for. Should it work mainly for big corporations and billionaires, including the richest person in the world — or for the rest of us?

My government is descending into a racist oligarchy, but my preschooler has a new favorite food and it's CAULIFLOWER. Also he asked to listen to punk rock during dinner. So I guess some things are ok 🤷‍♀️

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com How Americans and the world handle Donald Trump "will determine much about the next four years, and it will ask much from all of us," the New York Times editorial board writes. "We must meet the moment." Read more here: nyti.ms/4hrd4Kd

USAID, currently being shut down by Elon Musk, purchases about $2 billion annually in rice, wheat, lentils, and peas from American farmers.

Made my little phone calls for the day. Now I'll work on planning my little protest, and tonight I'll write more of my little postcards. Every little action counts!

Seriously. Why are we not rioting in the streets?

What are people in the twin cities doing about all this madness? Any orgs I should be following or events I should know about that might not be on my radar?

Okay, pardon us, but F this. America, you’ve got to stand up.

The people who are most worried about this coup are not the friends who panic and post Jezebel articles every time a bill is introduced. Instead, it's the friends who are lawyers or work in government, and are usually fairly chill & optimistic. So that's great. Keep making those phone calls folks!

President Trump has proposed that Palestinians leave Gaza for somewhere else. Framed less politely, this is an American president calling for ethnic cleansing of Gaza. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...

Wouldn't it be funny if, in a sudden plot twist, musk and his cronies used their access to the treasury and the department of education to delete all of our student loans instead of orchestrating a coup?
