One of the main reasons I pursued a PhD is because I participated in an IMSD program that also funded my undergrad research my senior year.

For all of you who cannot access pubmed, here is a good alternative: europepmc.org

Anne Carpenter writes about the science cuts: “this is like suddenly announcing that you will pay for doctors and nurses but not the hospital building they work in” for the LaPorte Herald Dispatch in IN 🌽 🧪🧬🔬🏠 @drannecarpenter.bsky.social www.lpheralddispatch.com/opinion/gues...

i want to see this energy and not a scintilla less

This is a straight ban on purchasing at #NIH — for cancer trials, treating patients, and developing cures. @chrislhayes.bsky.social Almost all purchases at NIH are made on govt credit cards. It’s clear what’s happening: Trump/Musk are blowing up the govt using devious… 1/ www.forbes.com/sites...

Completely agree. This documentary is fantastic and I highly recommend.

NIH funding is frozen. @annikabarber.bsky.social is keeping score: 50%+ of study sections planned for this year (77/148) have been cancelled. I talked to Dr. Barber about why these delays are disastrous, and why scientists should be pooling info and speaking up: www.chronicle.com/article/nih-...

Wondering if your study section cancelled? I update this sheet daily. As of today, 56/124 study sections that should have met since Jan 2, 2025 have "not met as scheduled." docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Happy Public Schools Week! As a former teacher, I know that public schools are not just where our kids go to learn - they’re the center of our communities. That’s why I was proud to make the largest investment in public schools in state history.

I think the biggest lie being told right now is that one of the wealthiest countries in the world cannot afford to invest in science, education, and the environment.

Congrats, @armstrongflylab.bsky.social! So deserved!

Yo-we can't buy your products if you don't labor to reverse the funding freeze, and you'll have to close your plant in Mebane NC @milliporesigma.bsky.social @thermofishersci.bsky.social @sigmaaldrich.bsky.social

🚨BREAKING: Federal Court GRANTS sweeping nationwide injunction against Trump DEI executive orders finding that they violate First and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution. A huge victory for @democracyforward.org and its clients. A stinging loss for Trump. Visit www.democracydocket.com for details.

Glad to see this post getting some traction, because the Federal Register is the WHOLE ballgame, folks. To drive this point home, a recent EO declares that all posts to FR now must be approved by the White House. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Lots to piece out from day 1 of the hearing on Trump's executive order concerning trans people in the military, but this back-and-forth between Judge Ana Reyes and government lawyer Jason Lynch about intersex people and biology is interesting!

For folks in DC with animal pals

I've worked really hard to get where I am today. Stuff like this makes me feel like my very existence and effort in getting here is a threat. Why do people want to erase my identity and path? Why do people want to erase my ability to help others? It is exhausting. clarksvillenow.com/local/books-...

This does away with awards based on underrepresentation, student support services based on race, scholarships, etc. Let me explain, pre coffee (wrote this morning, no time to update, you're getting a cut n paste), why this is a bad idea. 🧵 www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

My dissertation was on the impact of Title VI (which prohibits racial discrimination) investigations on school practice & I spent months of my life understanding the Title VI regs, their history, and how they can revised. 1/4

“Trainor compared the establishment of dormitories, facilities, cultural centers and even university-sanctioned graduation and matriculation ceremonies that are advertised as being exclusively or primarily for students of specific racial backgrounds to Jim Crow-era segregation.” I have no words.

To all my colleagues at NIH and CDC: I know that you worked so hard to get the position you had. I know how seriously you took your oath. I'm sorry that we've abandoned you and are willing to just let you go after all your training. I know we'll regret this but I'm afraid that'll come too late.

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

Interestingly these associations didn’t sue over the diversity funding being retracted.

Watching (needed) energy, collaboration & collective effort about NIH indirect costs by institutions/societies & the difference in energy & collective efforts around rollback of DEI took me back to impetus to write "Make equity essential to expedite change in academia" www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Me walking into spaces ready to call folks out on their performative allyship.

Nobody is telling me nothing this Black History Month, you hear?

I mentioned to one of my colleagues that loss of DEI programs and programs that affect representation would have a severe impact. Their response? “We’ll see.” Well, we’re seeing it.

Can you imagine your ex girlfriend cripwalking during the Super Bowl halftime show to the most popular diss song about you? Ouch.

I want to be as creatively petty as Kendrick Lamar when I grow up.

When they came for Black & Brown folks, or #DEI efforts, I heard very little commotion Only now with these new directives has the scientific community become concerned with the future of research & academic institutions It will not stop here. If you are not rich & conservative, you are at risk!

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen. Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !” globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

Helpful table to determine how much your University or health system is set to lose if the NIH indirect cap is suddenly lowered to 15%. For SJSU it is $374k which is on the smaller end but devastating considering our other budget issues. datawrapper.dwcdn.net/l0ZqA/8/

Sort of interesting to see a fancy academic society send a letter to membership about the IDC cut when their response to NIH cutting everything related to diversity was 🦗🦗.

Instead of valentines this year, I’m sending copies of this tiny little book to family and friends. If you have not read it, get two copies today— one to keep and one to give. The first lesson: Do not obey in advance. The second: Defend institutions. It could not be more relevant.

I’d like to sincerely thank various scholars and activists on Bluesky, especially Black scholars and activists, for giving me the language to express that “anti-DEI” means “segregationist”. That concept has been very helpful in forming my resolve to fight the efforts to re-segregate my university.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Let’s be clear about something that maybe the wider public will get. Not only will this destroy research but it will also lead to huge tuition increases. Your kids’ college is about to get a lot more expensive.

So much this

A Primer on Indirect Cost Rates

The Institute mourns the loss of R. Scott Hawley, PhD. A brilliant scientist, cherished colleague, and true mentor. Scott's contributions to our understanding of genetics and passion for training the next generation of scientists will forever be remembered. bit.ly/3WPqqYG

This. It gives power to a term they use to avoid saying what they really mean. Make them say what they mean.

The entire archive of CDC datasets can be found here. HUGE shoutout to data archivists- this work is important 👏🙌🏻 archive.org/details/2025...
