“We’re witnessing the self-sabotage of the United States.” Trump is pawning the family silver, cashing in US soft power that’s took generations to build. Trump thinks he’s building an empire, but really he’s squandering one www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Word of the day is ‘huff-snuff’ (16th century): a hectoring bully or braggart.

The Boy from the Sea by Irish writer Garrett Carr is Picador’s lead fiction title for 2025, out today. Set in a fishing community in Co Donegal, it’s an engrossing, beguiling tale about a family who adopt a baby found on the beach in a barrel. For fans of The Colony, Trespasses, The Coast Road. 🫶

Going to share some books here and see how it goes. First up is this gorgeous literary, coming of age debut novella by Michael Amherst set in rural England. If you enjoyed Stoner by John Williams or Claire Keegan’s work, The Boyhood of Cain might be one you’ll like. Out next week 13 Feb from Faber.

Well done @educationequality.bsky.social - advocacy in action. It never ceases to amaze me how few parents know their children’s rights when it comes to religious indoctrination in Irish schools. www.irishtimes.com/ireland/educ...

An excellent article indeed. The requirement that teachers have an additional qualification mandated by a faith community before they can teach in the majority of Irish primary schools certainly needs further discussion. Also, the last two sentences are deeply depressing .

Excellent article by Emma O'Kelly today 👏🏼 @educationequality.bsky.social have been busy campaigning for the removal of this widespread, discriminatory practice. #edchatie

#edchatie "We do not permit any other view within school" Immoral. Unethical. The absolute antithesis of what education should be about. Oh, and absolutely illegal. People wonder why I get so worked up about the need for divestment while people feel comfortable writing this down. 😡

Ok folks, let’s get organised & use BSky’s best feature for #Election24 Some lovely soul has created a *CUSTOM FEED* for the election count - a tab on your homepage that will have all the #GE24 content - you need to *click here & then “pin feed”* bsky.app/profile/did:...

Education was almost completely missing from the election debates. Patronage is missing in the small amount of discussion on education, despite it being in most of the parties' manifestos. Sometimes I realise there's a long road ahead. https://www.rte.ie/news/2024/1128/1483398-election-education/
