I spoke to Spanish news outlet Relevo about playing football in hotter stadiums, to complement research Relevo has done on how La Liga grounds are affected by warming. Key point: clear guidelines and standards are crucial, but there's a limit to how far we can adapt. www.relevo.com/futbol/liga-...

Rare bit of good HE news. Well done to the colleagues involved in this.

At least one person has been found dead and 84 houses have been destroyed as another wildfire broke out Wednesday in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture.

This. To my knowledge, no UK govt has ever bothered to build a consistent narrative that net zero will directly benefit regular people and working families. It's reminiscent of Brexit, where it was simply _assumed_ people understood the value of being in Europe. But no one did.

As I find myself saying more and more in all manner of situations: this is relevant to the UK too ⬇️

Surely reducing buses further will only exacerbate existing congestion? Something I've noticed anecdotally in recent years - but want to verify empirically - is that in Scotland's smaller towns and cities, limited public transport leads to CARS EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Tough decisions on adapting to climate change ahead for Scotland and the UK. Only a few weeks since this line was last shut by extreme weather. Unless you significantly upgrade infrastructure to be fit for a highly volatile climate, this will happen more and more often. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Love on-campus days. Walton Hall is class.

Frustrating seeing opportunities for international collaboration on climate + biodiversity that UK isn't in. Here's an idea. Places like Flanders, Faroes + Sao Paulo join. Could Scottish Funding Council step up + support Scottish institutions if the UK doesn't 🤔 www.biodiversa.eu/biodivtransf...

This is really excellent advice on how to do peer review, which is relevant to all fields of study. Being constructive, respectful and professional matters: helping the authors to improve their work is much more important than showing yourself how clever and witty you can be with your put-downs.

Joke's on you, suckers: I'm travelling by train so 'moderate traffic' is irrelevant.

Valuable new research into fair work in Scotland's offshore wind energy sector ⬇️ Offshore wind undoubtedly has a critical role to play in reducing emissions, but for technologies that appear inherently 'good' it is even more important to scrutinise who benefits and who loses out:

The biggest quantifiable contributor to the carbon emissions of a big sporting event is the travel to the event - especially all the private jets. What we can’t quantify? The footprint of all the goods purchased due to the ads. Oh—except for this one ⬇️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEU4...

A remarkable level of brass neck-ery from J-Power, who are promoting the new GENESIS Matsushima fossil fuel power plant in Nagasaki not only with a website, but with a smartphone augmented reality experience. It's coal-washing, but not as you know it: www.jpower.co.jp/bs/karyoku/g...

'Hostile environment'. Making trade more difficult just because. Slashing overseas aid. Fiscal policy from edgelord podcast bros. Bringing 'weirdos and misfits' in to gut the civil service. The USA is speed-running everything the UK has done in the last 10 years. Spoiler alert: none of it works*.

The operator of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant said that it will start dismantling treated water tanks next week to clear space needed to store nuclear fuel debris to be extracted from the reactors.

If you can, please do find 30 minutes to watch this powerful documentary on BBC Alba, which narrates the tragic consequences of weather extremes in the Outer Hebrides in the recent past, before turning to discuss climate change adaptation in the islands: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...

First research travel for this year, for our @openuniversity.bsky.social Open Societal Challenges project on urban greening for heat-resilient neighbourhoods. Zine-making in Govan on Tuesday night, and then to University of Stirling today to share findings with Scotland's Climate Forest groups.

Writing guidance for students on how to structure a Discussion section of a paper or thesis. I think this about covers one of the main points I want to get across.

I don't know why I bother saying these things again and again, but: (1) Cutting won't save you, it'll make things worse and it'll be redundancies again in a couple of years (2) You can't make national infrastructure like this depend on short-term student numbers. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Between 2019 and 2023, researchers paid $8.968 billion to make papers open access. Imagine what else could be done with this money if it wasnt paid to for profit publishing companies... 👉 arxiv.org/abs/2407.16551

This is awful. Solidarity with those affected. On a related note, I can't help but wonder if REF2029 will be quietly parked - or at least greatly scaled down - when it becomes apparent that the REF will show up how uneven the impact of the funding crisis is on research capacity across the sector.

We keep getting 'hard-nosed businesspeople' saying they want folk back in offices. I get offices can be efficient. But these bosses never seem to call for rent control, cheaper public transport, childcare subsidies or anything to support workers to come in. Funny, that. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Yesterday, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner teetered on the brink due to extreme heat at the Australian Open. Yet, the tournament continues to promote the industries that profit from business-as-usual warming. Climate leadership means dropping polluting sponsors, not just providing 10-minute heat breaks.

The estimated cost of the #LosAngeles #wildfires is hundreds of billions. Yet BBC Politics Live today poses the question 'Are Labour’s Green Spending Plans Affordable?'. No country can afford not to build a green economy that mitigates and is adapted to #climatechaos

I can't believe there is a threat to Japanese at Sheffield University. Please take the time to read and sign this petition. www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/sh... #Japan #JapaneseStudies #JapaneseLanguage

At the end of last year, I was interviewed for this i Paper review of climate and extreme weather in 2024, and its implications for the UK. Key point: even for extremes we don't see in the UK itself, they will manifest themselves in our food prices and insurance premiums: inews.co.uk/news/year-fr...

I recently fed into this article on emissions from the English Premier League's 'big six' clubs. It's not surprising the clubs with the biggest attendances and most European games have the highest emissions - but they can also lead by example: warrenmenezes.substack.com/p/premier-le...

Thanks to the British Science Association for producing a case study on our collaborative work with the Tiree Community Development Trust on climate change adaptation:

Good long-read here by @tomokootake.bsky.social and @russ-chris.bsky.social on the role of committees in Japan's climate change policies. Have always been interested in the disciplinary backgrounds and influence of 'expert' committees for climate and environent in Japan, so this is a great primer.

Deeply suspicious of any peer reviewer who says "this is not novel, this has been done already" but then only provides references to works by men at elite Western institutions as examples.

This year, I've been working with Tiree Community Development Trust on experiences of climate change on Tiree, and identifying adaptation actions. This climate map and guide is one of our first outcomes, and gives a basis for the practical action to come next: www.tireetrust.org.uk/en/new-clima...

That would be the time I introduced Seicomart and its Hot Chef to the English-speaking world during the 2021 Olympics:

Unfortunate but sadly not surprising. Remember this is a part of the country that generates millions of pounds of revenue from tourism and renewable power generation; yet virtually none of that seems to filter down to public services or people's daily lives. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Interviewed by AP News for this article on athletes and sport and their influence at #COP29: apnews.com/article/cop2...

New paper uses archival work in Fukuoka, Japan, to analyse how expertise shaped understanding of urban climate in plans and policy. We argue individual and institutional expertise can be influential in policy, but this does not always lead to material change. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

A few notes from fieldwork in Nagasaki, and from my talk yesterday to SustainaPlaza Nagasaki: energyvalues.wordpress.com/2024/11/21/f...

Enjoyable time feeding back initial insights from fieldwork into the social aspects of Nagasaki Prefecture's climate actions. Comparing Nagasaki + Scotland's experiences with offshore wind, shipbuilding and high-emitting sites. Thanks Sustenaplaza Nagasaki for hosting! sustaina-n.com/news_info/ho...
