As well as a journalist and mission leader of NGO, "Mediterranea Saving Humans", operating to save migrants at sea, the chaplain of the same NGO also had his phone tapped by Italian Secret Services in February 2024, using the spyware Graphite produced by Israeli company Paragon.

I think everyone should apply for a DOGE job. Or at least, you know, fill out the form. Maybe even apply for other people. Fictional people, even. Inanimate objects. In this form right here. doge.gov/join

NYT is claiming it is Ukraineā€™s fault for two autocrats scheming to carve it up, pillage is assets, murder it people: it should have given Trump more bribes & not have dressed so provocative near Putin.

I always wear a mask indoors I even wear it at huge pulmonology congresses (ERS, @atscommunity.bsky.social etc.), often 1 of a few doing so (peer pressure is a big thing šŸ˜‘) But I unmask when I'm speaking on a stage bc I learnt that many people w hearing impairment rely on lip reading to understand.

Big court win: judge rules Exxon, Shell, Chevron, BP and others must face claims by Puerto Rican towns in a RICO case alleging the companies engaged in a coordinated, decades-long deception campaign to conceal the true dangers of fossil fuel consumption. www.reuters.com/legal/litiga...

The UK's anti-protest laws pre-legitimise far right authoritarianism. Labour must repeal them now. My column today. www.theguardian.com/global/comme...

Although the majority of people around the world are worried about climate change, most still feel it is a future issue or one that only affects the natural environment. They couldnā€™t be more wrong: climate change is already affecting whatā€™s on our kitchen counter!

If people were really just dying from chronic diseases then how come they werenā€™t dying from their chronic diseases until after March, 2020?

Hey James: To avoid the ā€œradical sexualization of kidsā€ā€¦ how bout you stop obsessing over their genitalia at birth and let them identify and live as they feel best-suited. Hell, they can even be non-binary!

"Despite the science, they want to back the likes of Woodside to drill and pollute for another 50 years. Thatā€™s a death warrant for Australiaā€™s corals." These are your partners aren't they @monashuniversity.bsky.social? www.theguardian.com/environment/...

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

I have a coauthored book, 'Scientists on Survival!', coming out next month with @scientistsx.bsky.social, and preorders this weekend will get 25% off with @waterstones.bsky.social! waterstones.com/campaign/feb...

I will keep the letter open until 3rd March, the date of the meeting called by the Royal Society to discuss principles around the public pronouncements and behaviours of its fellows. So one more week to add your voice to the call for the RS to stand up for its values.

ā€œWe are deeply concerned about a range of recent US Executive Orders that collectively have the potential to dismantle the US scientific enterprise as it has existed for the past 70 years. We are already seeing the impact of these disruptions and censorship efforts within our communities...

Does your child want to go to college, want to go to med or grad school? The new cures for diseases, new technologies that we depend on come out of universities. #Trump, #Musk, #Vought are now killing higher education. If you haven't been paying attention, this would be a good time to wake up.

Apropos of nothing, I'm rereading all my histories on the fall of the Roman Republic. It's an ancient tale where ambitious Romans co-opted the populist cause, which ultimately led to the destruction of their democracy, a devastating civil war & headlong into the hands of mad, autocratic rulers.

This article really drives home the reality of people who could be us during war. What would I have been able to do, if this was me, my country, a war I was in? I don't know Please read

ā€˜There is simply no conception (within NHS England) of how pivotal GPs are to the cost-effective performance of the health service - let alone to holistic patient careā€™ So says the ever-insightful @pwhitakerwriter.medsky.social www.newstatesman.com/politics/hea...

Last week, JD Vance gave Europe an ultimatum: it can align with the Trump administration, or face its wrath. To comply, Europe needs to embrace the extreme right, repeal tech rules the US ā€œwill not accept,ā€ and allow Silicon Valley to dominate its market. It should tell the US to take a hike.

What could go wrong

You can tell Nancy Mace stopped paying attention to biology after the first month of 5th grade because 1 in 500 people born with male phenotypes have XXY chromosomes and 1 in 20K born as ā€œbiological malesā€ actually have XX chromosomes. Even ā€œbiological sexā€ isnā€™t actually binary anywhere in nature.

ā€œMicroscopic particles emitted from brake pads can be more toxic than those emitted in diesel vehicle exhaust, a study has found.ā€ People generally associate pollution from cars as being from exhaust pipesā€¦ but thatā€™s only part of the problem with cars.

There's a common path in the development of authoritarian or totalitarian regimes, regardless of whether they are overseen by Catholic Inquisitors, Protestant enforcers, monarchists, fascists, Nazis, Stalinists, Maoists .... First they eliminate words. Then they eliminate people.

šŸšØBREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

I was asking myself why I and so many others found this so triggering! Then I realised itā€™s classic victim blaming, a common feature of misogyny and also used to suppress minorities with whom one might have beef.

Few people have understood injustice as deeply as these two people. Few have grappled with it more deeply. A few have so well taught us that joy is an essential tool for fighting injustice

A defining policy battle is about to come to a head in this country. The Republican budget will force everyone - especially Congress and the White House - to make plain whether they are prepared to harm the rest of us in order to fund tax cuts for the wealthiest.

It is believed that there are more people who speak multiple languages ā€‹ā€‹in the world than people who speak just one.
