According to Ancestry a relative was only 7 during pregnancy. I would not consider that a young woman.

Iā€™m certainly biased, but I concur. Eugenics is such a complex issue.

Maybe it was having hyperlexia or just being interested in just about anything, but I came home to find my books and music had been raided. I was extremely sheltered. Even if I questioned the Bible too much, I would be given a censored version.

When I told my mom I believe her father had autism, she said that was mean. I replied itā€™s only mean if I wanted to cure him when he was alive even though he was very happy. Eventually parents will try to make designer babies, but weā€™re still rather far from that future.

My sibling has T21 and my kid has a microgain on the end of chromosome 17. If my child could have gene editing to minimize seizures, I would choose that option. If my mom was forced to make that decision for my brother or risk losing parental rights, her and I would be knocking down every door.

Gene editing isnā€™t eugenics, but that doesnā€™t mean we donā€™t need to worry about eugenics, especially in the states. Americans likely will not use Cas9 anytime soon, even if T21 is only editing Nondisjunction to levels seen in translocations & mosaicism. And weā€™ll always have ASD. šŸ’œ

Wish I could say this was a social experiment or give some other lame excuse for attacking a type of person who shouldnā€™t exist anymore. I was reading John Langdon Down who was a phrenologist and shouldnā€™t be remembered as a pioneer after torturing his patients. Thank you for the astute observation.

Phrenologists back in the day looked just as sad and pathetic as the ones today. Itā€™s almost like theyā€™re descendants of the same asshats.

I had a website like that and it was so perfect. Even the php mailer never got any spam. Those were the best of times.

Iā€™m a fan of old medical papers. Theyā€™re total garbage.

I do wonder if he ever considered getting botox for the spasmodic dysphonia. Sometimes toxins can do wonders. He would still sound like a complete pos, but we could better understand his absurdity.

Someone else mentioned how intelligence is ableist. I agree ableism is total bullshit. Eugenics can be a lot of different tactics, but I donā€™t think thatā€™s what Idiocracy intended. Iā€™m not saying youā€™re wrong. Nor do I believe Iā€™m right.
comment in response to post
Okay, I completely agree with this sentiment. šŸ‘

My brother has trisomy 21. Personally I didnā€™t have any prenatal testing, but if someone does thatā€™s still not eugenics. And ableism is another concept altogether; donā€™t remember any ableist tropes in idiocracy. Thank you for replying. You seem very kind.

The next four years are going to be long enough without having this conversation again. Maybe I am biased since I like the movie, but I never got the eugenics argument. They didnā€™t force anyone to have unnecessary sterilization or to breed a cheap labor force.

Iā€™m trying to understand this point of view. The beginning purposefully doesnā€™t take anyoneā€™s ability to procreate. How is that eugenics? šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø
