Even if it's "really hard", given the number of stars in the universe, there still could well be an incredible number of advanced civilizations, who probably think our technological 'concerns' (like traveling at the speed of light) are utterly trivial.

Never heard about this but Wikipedia says the dispute has been settled.

Exactly. The guy is obviously just a liar, willing to say what he knows people want to hear. But what does it say about our democracy that a guy like Trump was elected not once, but twice? Is it simply a US problem or more fundamental?

14 billion years isn't "that old"? Life on earth is probably 3-4 billion years old.

Agree, although in terms of entertainment it's preferable to here, at least for the time being.

People moaning is also pretty insufferable.

Many people don't appreciate that 'boring as fuck' politics is something we should probably be aiming for.

Something that can't be avoided isn't much of a goal.

Falling apart because doom-mongers like Hitchens want to will it into existence in order to promote their own narrow and bleak vision of the world.

His logic is utterly idiotic. "As a Christian" I'm grateful he protected the Christians. First, it's a certainty he must have killed 'some' Christians but even if he hasn't so what? It's OK to murder hundreds of thousands of people because they aren't Christian? Has he even read the Bible?

This backs up my theory that humans are some alien kid's science homework.

Crypto seems to me just a clear Ponzi scheme. Of course it's possible to make a lot of money from a Ponzi scheme but if anyone thinks in 100 years Bitcoin will not be worthless then I just think they are being very naïve.

The key point is "in advance". You can agree with the point but it's wrong to 'in advance' agree with anything Snyder says simply because he's Snyder.

Of course these kind of people, in order to preserve any decency might be reflective and humble at this time, but of course they just double down, which is why they are totally irrelevant.

Yeah that could be it but of course those are problems we have and I think unlikely a civilization that potentially could have existed for literally hundreds of thousands of years might have not overcome them. More interesting to me is that they have the potential to communicate but choose not to.

I think it's hard to imagine how there isn't life or even intelligent life on other planets. The most interesting question is I think if there is then why haven't we met them yet.

I found this useful, no idea if any good though: "Nevertheless, none of this means that Assad’s fate is sealed. The regime still has pathways to survival. "

I think the only reasonable approach is that there is ultimately no 'things' since 'thing' is a human concept, which doesn't mean there are zero things but that reality is athing (without thingness). But I'm not a physicist and in fact no practically nothing about it.

Yes. Our ideas about the past derive from what does exist, not what did exist.

I only can think of Sorrow off the top of my head. It's interesting how people can have different views. I've met people who genuinely said Piper was their favourite. For me it simply has to be Dark Side.

I'd say not hating yourself is the key. If someone is able to love themselves then fine, personally it sounds like loving oneself could easily descend into a lack of self-reflection and/or narcissism.

Given the amount of shit that is going to hit the fan pretty soon it's amazing how many people aren't troubled.

My grandfather often used to say things like "lovely day for a murder", thinking back either maybe he had heard this theory or he's got some serious skeletons in the closet.
