I'm writing this one at the moment. I want to equip people with a knowledge of the foundations of our approaches to supporting autistic people so they can challenge effectively when support is based on foundations that mean what is built will eventually topple, and

New blog post, this time over at @stimpunks.org One Size Fits All? A story about the education system. Read more: stimpunks.org/2025/01/27/o... #ActuallyAutistic

Reading is so wild. Like, I’m simultaneously deciphering marks on a page and picturing the narrative those marks are conveying. I’m both in my body and also in the middle of the story. When I really think about it, I’m just so amazed that my brain can do all of that. Anyway! Carry on.

“Interviewees described feeling paralyzed and stuck at their current employment status because of previous traumatic experiences both within the workplace and around employment processes. They felt misunderstood, judged, and powerless within systems surrounding employment.” #AutRes

"Why is it that actively training autistic and wider-neurodivergent children & young people to people-please in exchange for conditional inclusion (but not necessarily acceptance) is still considered 'best practice' by professionals and parents?" Alternatives here: therapistndc.org/toxic-social...

As we get to the end of another year, just remember you don't have to size up your whole life right now, or compare your accomplishments, or decide exactly who you are. Just keep growing at your own pace. And take a little nap. ❤️

And during #Perimenopause I gave up caring what other people thought. #FawnReflex see our new paper. tinyurl.com/AutMenopause the transition may lead to flourishing.

I wrote about the reaction to the shooting of a CEO. "It seems to me that when you create a world where human life has been made as cheap as possible, you will eventually find you live in a world where your human life is deemed by others to be cheap, too." www.the-reframe.com/peaceful-sol...

So excited our review is now published open acccess - How auditory processing contributes to the Autistic profile! And on my birthday no less! This review looks at 2 main aspects around auditory processing for Autistic people, as reported in the literature. doi.org/10.1002/aur....

Two words for certain types of people, should you need them: microlipet: one who gets all worked up over nothing. struthonian: the person who buries their head in the sand and says ‘Problem? What problem?’.

There is an enormous divide between evaluators of autism and what autistic self-advocates, and even autistic researchers of autism, have been saying for a long time. Example: I got evaluations from CA, MD, and KY this weekend. They all recommend working on eye contact and no stimming. #autism

“Growing up, being Autistic itself didn’t create challenges for me—but being Autistic in a world that is not Autistic friendly—in an ableist world—created a number of challenges for me” —Dr. Morénike Giwa Onaiwu From the upcoming documentary: The Divergent Gift; Unboxing Autism

I don't know who needs to hear this, but don't force neurodivergent or disabled or mentally unwell or chronically ill people to have their cameras on in online meetings. And let people type questions in the chat- not just speak them out loud. This is very basic inclusion! #Neurodiversity #AuDHD

I need to tattoo this one on my heart.

“Our team of qualified specialists needs several sessions with patients, as well as statements from family and friends, which is incredibly time-consuming. Becky and Olivia, on the other hand, can spot it in seconds.” thedailytism.com/nhs-to-outso...

ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/id/eprint/97... Useful new research on the experiences of late diagnosed autistic people, and social trauma. Lots on how much rethinking people have to do, about social situations that were a nightmare in the past.

"But I don't need to know how your brain works". A common comment, when autistic people talk about the need to explain that we're autistic. Mmm. Let's explain a bit of everyday life. Thread. I am invited into a meeting with e.g. 7 people whose brains function in 'typical' ways/

"you don't look autistic" "Well, I'm wearing comfortable clothes, have my ear plugs and a bag of fiddle toys, I'm walking on tiptoes whilst looking around in a stressed hypervigilant manner, flinching at loud noises. So, in a way, I kinda do look a bit autistic. Just not in the way you meant."
