OTD in 1916 the battle of Verdun started. For #histbookchat, a novel on the battle by a German. Supposed to have been a propaganda novel, von Unruh instead wrote about the futility of war and was duly declared insane by the German High Command. A highly descriptive account of the inferno of Verdun.
