As I was saying abuaardvark.substack.com/p/dont-ruin-...

Our safety is fighting against tyranny, not appeasing it. It's as simple as that. For that, western Europe needed strong leadership 3 years ago. We didn't have that then. So the 2nd best time is now.

If you live in Europe, especially Western Europe, and only read one thing today, it should be this.

"Let's remind everyone that journalist who recorded Cesar's confessions is a French journalist, Garance Le Caisne. It's an admirable piece of work that should be recognised for its true worth and not rendered invisible. Work like it requires you to take a lot on yourself, away from the spotlight."

The Russian we should fear the most is not Putin, it's Ayn Rand. Though being very worried about Putin is still good policy.

This is very much worth your time, moreso if you're the type to write about booze and hijabs. www.levantine.press/p/deep-state

I want to spell out the basic reason it’s so dangerous for Elon to have control of the U.S. payments system. It may seem like a technical matter, but the dynamics are simple. 1/x

This is what the government did with 120K+ Japanese Americans in 1942. I know. I was there in those camps.

Senator Kelly's rather masterful discombobulation of Tulsi Gabbard was much more revealing of who and what she is than a few non-answers on Snowden. (h/t @juliehaviland2.bsky.social) m.youtube.com/watch?v=1AIo...

Great to speak to @bylinepodcast.bsky.social about latest Democracy for Sale story, the frankly incredible tale of how a London law firm broke no rules when it worked for Wagner Group's founder Yevgeny Prigozhin to Slapp investigative journalist @eliothiggins.bsky.social

My latest in @timep.bsky.social “Truth in Transition: Disinformation in Post-Assad Syria” “Disinformation fuels fear and division in Syria’s new political landscape, eroding trust and blocking the path to a peaceful political transition.”

An oldie but goodie on the silence of #GazaGenocide‌ activists during the Assad regime's destruction of Yarmouk. This was written in 2015. www.thetower.org/article/yarm...

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

@cnn.com, the channel that brought you "whoops, the prisoner was an air force intelligence officer in the Assad regime" would like to inform you that "remarkable proposal" is the Trump-era euphemism for ethnic cleansing. edition.cnn.com/2025/01/25/p...

It takes until a Palestinian politician quoted in the 20th paragraph of this story before this "remarkable proposal" is accurately described as ethnic cleansing

This man deserves your support.

You don’t get it, he’s just neurodivergent, AfD is his emotional support group

(1/20) Dr. Yasser Abdulmajid from Douma says Syrian & Russian officials forced him to deny a 2018 chemical attack. This thread reveals how fear and coercion shaped his false testimony—and how he’s now speaking out.

A fascinating tale of what happens when fear, stupidity and dictatorial mouthpiece standards of fact-checking intersect with reality, by @abdalhadealani.bsky.social threadreaderapp.com/thread/18829...

The state of the world is pretty grim lately but check out this graph showing that throughout human history until recently, half of the people die before reaching the age of 15. Not even the convicted felon Donald Trump can take us back there. ourworldindata.org/child-mortal...

On a wall of one of Assad's torture dungeons, a prisoner wrote: "The Syrian Red Crescent brought me here!" The Red Crescent was an extention of Assad's terror apparatus. #Syria

Many people cited Musk's visit to Auschwitz a year ago as proof he's opposed to antisemitism. Here's an account of someone who was there with him: "Elon did not care.... He was utterly detached. He cared about how he looked."

Here, have an interesting read... www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

If you’re a journalist with the bandwidth keeping track of the shitstorm, you could do a great service by compiling a daily/weekly summary digest of all the big bullet points people should know and sharing that in a form that is less overwhelming to rate limit the deliberate emotional DDOS

I don't often share the (too) many analyses of Ukraine/Russia developments in 2015. But this one is a must-read, by the excellent @wesslau.bsky.social, a seasoned diplomat and very acute observer of Ukraine, when we talk about security and conflict resolution foreignpolicy.com/2024/11/27/t...
