If anyone at the @nujofficial.bsky.social #NUJDM2025 or elsewhere wants to chew the fat over any of the above please let me know. Digital literacy presents its own set of challenges, but it's not insurmountable. Perception is always greater than reality.

And the key takeaway for #NUJDM2025 delegates, @nujofficial.bsky.social members and non-members alike? You CAN work on social media without working FOR social media. It is entirely possible to work to the NUJ Code of Conduct even in digital spaces where ethical standards are lower...

1. Stick to NUJ standards, even if platforms don't. 2. Curate your feed like an editorial space. 3. Don’t chase engagement over ethics. 4. Protect your privacy and editorial independence. 5. Lead by example and show what responsible journalism looks like. #NUJDM2025

So how should @nujofficial.bsky.social members and non members alike approach platforms that don't fully reflect the journalistic ethics that the Code of Conduct is built on? Building on the analysis you can develop a 5-Point checklist to help new and existing members to grapple with this?

Now, here’s how they scored: 🔴 YouTube: 53/100 🔵 Facebook/Instagram: 48/100 ⚪ X (Twitter): 45/100 🟡 TikTok: 41/100 Even the best score barely clears 50%. I was also able to knock up a graph, because seriously, who doesn't like data visualisation? #NUJ2025DM #HumbleBrag

Each platform was scored out of 100 based on six ethical areas: - Truth / Accuracy - Fairness / Non-Discrimination - Independence - Privacy - Accountability - Freedom of Expression #NUJDM2025

So, using several A.I. content analysis scripts - thanks in part to one too many coffees at the #NUJDM2025 - and cross referencing against research I compared the principles that underpin the @nujofficial.bsky.social Code of Conduct against the real world behaviour of social media platforms.

The expectation from the Met Police was in the region of 300-400 in attendance. In reality it was somewhere between 12,000 to 15,000 people.

...but that won’t happen with a demoralised workforce that’s being chastised for trying to boost morale against a backdrop of ceaseless ragebait.

There’s no doubt that the public want to see change in policing on the streets, especially in the heart of #London with the Metropolitan Police...

Rather than understanding it as a minor staff morale initiative that doesn’t come at the expense of day-to-day police work? London isn’t burning, but his credibility most certainly is.

So, with that being said, we’re to believe, based on the testimony of an angry old man who couldn’t catch a pair of singing milkmen in Hunted, that a staff Easter egg hunt at the Empress State Building is a sign of systemic negligence and incompetence?

But it's a straw man argument. Police forces around the UK are struggling to retain officers, as morale remains on the floor. Nevertheless, against this backdrop the #UK is still widely regarded by many as a world leader in counter-terrorism policing.

Or even if they want to, which is a reality we've increasingly got to accept in the immediate term.
