Exactly, dude. All the ease of entry into the game is worth shit when it only sets you up to fail. Sells copies, though, so mission accomplished I guess.

GU is fantastic, World is fantastic, Wilds is probably great. 4U is landing a hail-mary guard point. It’s crafting your first G-Rank armor set and feeling like you’re gonna make it. It’s getting up and trying again after getting stunlocked by Azure Rathalos 3 carts in a row. 4U is Monster Hunter.

4U is peak and GU grandstanders are World babies in disguise. Don’t yell at me, please. I love you, but you have to understand. 4U does not bend the knee to the cheap tricks offered by GU. 4U weathers the ceaseless march of time beautifully, an unchanging idol of perfection.

i think a lot of the push around frame gen comes from nvidias ability to use 50 series framegen metrics to compare against their older cards and claim the new cards are far more powerful than they actually are - not that they’re not powerful cards, they’ve just inflating the relative numbers.

you cannot engage in discussion with nazis in good faith because they do not engage in good faith. by extension, opening your platform to nazis does not create opportunities for healthy discussion, it only creates opportunities for them to spread hate and misinformation to drown out their opposition

friction fights you but it is in that fight that you'll find passion. the strong won't make it through but sometimes that's okay. it's for the art.
comment in response to post
it is a bummer to see such little value placed on friction. friction in video games is so important in so many ways it's almost impossible to quantify. friction creates intent and forces thought - forces engagement. sanding it all off will glide people into your game but right back out of it as well

he looks fucked up in a way you can’t sling the usual shit at. he doesn’t look like someone did the sliders bad in the character creator, he looks like the person that programmed the character creator was evil

"Wow!"

i love your work paul, though i feel it's a poor showing to boil anything down to an "Intermission" from a larger, more popular series. it sets the reader up to believe the game is lesser than, not smaller in scope, budget or intent

remember what they took from us

it’s gotten weirder in the newer ones but it used to be, like, villages would have a single resident monster hunter who would stop the local wildlife from razing their homes and that was you

getting the controller to work was half the fun. this is the equivalent of modding a bethesda game but not wanting to play it.

Is the date of the test not in the article or am I just not seeing it?
comment in response to post
this is genuinely the most interesting thing i’ve read today, thank you.

me thinking i’ll just finally play the new war then get on to 1999 but the game hits me with that YOU NEED A NECRAMECH pop up

if you didn’t grow up playing turn based rpgs on the snes/ps1 it feels like you’re just permanently alienated from 20% of gaming and when you do go check them out they’re pretty good but not, like, “defines my video game opinions for most of my life” good. that’s formative experiences, i guess.

pretty sure i had that exact experience with the lying gun in borderlands 2. it looks like it has amazing stats but it's actually garbage, the gimmick being the gun lies about it's stats.

i love when my full priced AAA video game comes with mandatory bloatware that actively harms the experience

what even is this? they don't show a single monster being hunted in the trailer, just a bunch of climbing?

I played Cold War for the first time earlier this year and I really enjoyed it. It doesn’t have ideas as interesting as BO6 but it is still a very fun, very goofy globe-trotting first person shooter adventure. Its final level is a super good riff on The Stanley Parable.

I was looking around for a streamer mode or something to turn everyone’s name into Anonymous384828 the other day. Insane that so much of the playerbase is in a race to the bottom for the most abhorrent username/clan tag.

campaign was fantastic, it really feels like treyarch give it their all. zombies is so fun ive been playing as it as much as i did when i was 15 and the mp is up there, too. it’s a huge shame that (i’m pretty confident) most of the calling cards and unlock camos are ai art. hard to care about them.
comment in response to post
cannot believe they give you the tool they give you in that level and it feels as good to use as it does but then it never exists in any mode in the game again

I remember thinking it would be a good idea to wear the track jacket on one arm for the entire set. Maybe I had trouble getting it off and wanted it to look deliberate? Can’t remember. This was 2006.

it's insane going back to games from this era and finding how many of them just dont have subtitles at all. im pretty sure there's no subtitles in any halo game before 5.
