The GOP-run North Carolina legislature somehow manages to stand out as supremely anti-democratic in an age crowded with anti-democratic forces.

Only five votes on the Supreme Court for Article I of the Constitution of the United States bsky.app/profile/stev...

The mendacity and unprofessionalism of Alito's dissent is beyond normal even for him, and while four votes is obviously better than five, that "the government can ignore court orders" got four votes is still a pretty grim sign.

four votes for “the president is a king and the framers created a monarchy”

Let's just be clear about this--Reagan was not in any way a good president. And without him, we wouldn't be in this whole mess right now. 🧵1/

American fascism has a name and a model. It's Jim Crow. Jason Stanley has been tremendously clear-eyed about this.

The census is mandated in the Constitution.

The grift has turned into an outright large scale theft.

This is unconstitutional. A violation of the First Amendment. A violation of federalism and the separation of powers. It’s unconstitutionally vague. It’s unlawful. It’s unlawful. It’s unlawful.

Of course the main story is Trump’s authoritarianism. But the secondary story is that some university presidents and donors called for this. They went on the news and in front of Congress to claim their students were violent antisemites, funded by Iran, who don’t deserve speech rights

The first time they had to do stuff like spend money at his hotels and there was so much scrutiny even though he was ultimately never forced to divest, but this time it's just guys showing up with briefcases of cash and gold bars.

Reminder that the Census determines how federal dollars, and House seats, are allocated. This is, yet another, five alarm fire.

People bout to get real upset when they realize you can’t feed yourself on hating pronouns.

DOJ, the nation’s chief law enforcement office, is sending a message that normalizes lawless conduct that harm our elections. Not only is DOJ not defending voting rights, it is poised to defend people who undermine the right to vote.

Their capacity to just flat out lie is matched only by the capacity of dupes to accept it.

BREAKING — The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has just announced the closure of major regional offices in Philly, LA and Chicago, per email shared with me. “5 alarm fire,” SEC employee tells me. Full email text:

This is going to hurt so, so many people and cause untold damage to the economy.

Don't think it's alarmist to say that Elon Musk is trying to whip up a violent reactionary frenzy on Twitter against federal judges who do things he doesn't like ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...

People should be calling this what it is, which is a crypto bailout. They're cutting cancer research so they can bailout rich, degenerate gamblers bsky.app/profile/ronf...

this admin is the realtime demo of the answer to the question "what if the absolute stupidest people in the history of a nation ran that nation"

AOC is the most vociferous and articulate opposition the new fascist regime is currently facing, so of course the new fascist regime is threatening to prosecute her for the heinous crime of...informing people of their rights.

What’s stopping Musk from offering $1 billion to any federal judge who immediately resigns?

You don't oppose those credibly accused of sexual violence because of "purity." It is an indicator about how a person wields power.

To be clear, “Vance skis in jeans” is Vermont’s highest insult. This is Final Boss Nuclear Insult level in the Vermont linguistic hierarchy.

Protestors skiing with signs to humiliate JD Vance is fantastic

Tomorrow there will be a summit in London where Starmer, Macron, and Zelenskyy will have to face the reality that flattery and deals will not get Ukraine security guarantees. This piece for @goodauth.bsky.social explains why it was worth a try, but likely doomed. goodauthority.org/news/trump-a...

it is hard to overstate how committed centrists are to simply denying what is in front of their eyes in favor of power-flattering narratives. it is both extremly dumb and at some point it is safe to conclude they simply support bad things

If they're not Russian assets what would Russian assets be doing differently?

"Putin went through a hell of a lot with me"

President Trump’s simpering fealty to Vladimir Putin and Russia is embarrassing and dangerous. Illinois stands with Ukraine, and so should the White House.

Many Medicaid recipients do not know they receive it because Medicaid is called different things in different states. The public narrative of Medicaid focuses on a distant other, but 40% of US children and 60% of nursing home residents receive Medicaid. Just SOME of the names by state are below:

New, from me: Tulsi Gabbard purged trans intelligence officers after a Chris Rufo smear campaign. They were targeted because they were trans, their words were mischaracterized, and they were offered no due process. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-era-of...

This whole thing is too soon

This whole country wants bad things for others more than they want good things for themselves.

There is no acceptable reason for doing this. None. There is no conceivable situation in which Trump officials will be in the position of Lincoln officials trying to figure out whether to obey Dred Scott. No one should fall for this.

Other countries have social safety nets. The US has women.

Politicians should never interfere with the day to day operations of colleges and universities. No matter what political party, it’s an assault on the independence of the institution and on academic freedom. nypost.com/2025/02/25/u...

Congressional Democrats say Congress should have spending authority and other powers laid out in Art. 1 of the Constitution. Congressional Republicans say this is a red line, insisting that budgets and other bills are merely suggestions, and the White House must be able to break laws when it wants.

This is extremely, extremely bad. Our legal system cannot function if the govt retaliates — and if courts allow it to retaliate — against lawyers who take matters the govt disfavors.

THEY'RE GOING TO ISSUE PERMANENT VISA BANS TO TRANS VISITORS TO THE US. This isn't just for athletes. The directive as stated applies to all visa applications made by trans folks and declare it material fraud to use a different gender marker on applications. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

This paper caught my attention, but I never got around to posting about it.

What drives me crazy about the anti-DEI rhetoric is everyone wants to be judged on merit. But you can't be judged on merit if you can't even get in the door because you don't fit some prejudiced definition of who is capable and who isn't

I miss DEI
