Attempting to root some grape and elderberry cuttings in water. My hope is that I will have enough success to expand my own plantings AND share some with folks in my community. There are “better” propagation methods, but I’m trying for what will be easiest for me.

Rather than "giving up" something for Lent, I'm going to aim to give more to my community--both financially and of myself.

Blue cornmeal cake made with corn we grew. Elder-blackberry jam filling from berries we grew. Lemon buttercream frosting. A collaboration between my spouse, our kid, and I. Thankful for tastes of last season’s garden while it’s still too soon to plant the next.

Vaclav Havel is my Roman Empire.

Joy is a Fedco Seeds delivery in your mailbox. I even hugged the envelope before opening it.

The joy of seeing my wee baby kale sprouts.

Getting ready to dive into learning after procrastinating since late fall.

This weekend I started my first round of seedlings for the new gardening year. In years past I've been obsessive and intense with my planning, always falling short. This year my approach is to simply do as best as I can.

Since its throwback Thursday, lemme see you as a kid ☺️

Music my 13 year old has had on repeat recently: Flight of the Conchords, Spamalot!, “Radioactive Mama” by Sheldon Allman, “Dr. Worm” by TMBG, Weird Al

When I start to feel cranky about the cold, I try to remind myself that most of my fruit trees/bushes require chill hours in order to successfully produce a fruit crop.

Getting together with others certainly requires more effort than scrolling a phone -- but I've come to rediscover over the past year that it also provides far greater reward.

What is one thing that brought you joy today?

It's admirable how island EMS has found creative solutions -- but frustrating that they don't have a better option.

Had breakfast with a friend with morning.

This used to live on my desk in my office, now it lives on my fridge. They are words I try to live by every day.** **(Some days I’m more successful than others)

One of the small pleasures of being an early bird is sipping coffee as the sky begins to blush with the morning. There are fractals of frost on my window. And puffs of smoke from the pellet stove. The mountains are purple just like the song. And the sky is, briefly, a glorious peachy pink.

Y'all, I was so excited for a minute thinking there might be a reboot of one of my favorite franchises, with maybe Richard Dean Anderson making guest appearances...

At church on Sunday, we were asked what gives us hope. My answer was knowing that in a couple of months there will be daffodils and leaves once more.

Tech week was a lot easier when I was in my early 20s. The middle-aged mom version of me does not like being out late (in this case "late" meaning after my watch gives me my bedtime reminder at 8:45pm).

Chosen solitude may be the most significant social fact of our age, @dkthomp.bsky.social writes. The emergence of the anti-social century is changing childhood social development, our physical infrastructure, and even our relationship to reality.

As we continue to move into the cold and dark of winter, remember that your light is needed more than ever.

Last month I started to rewatch “The Good Place.” I needed the laughs, but also the reminder that it’s never too late to be a better person. Because there are some really good lessons in that show. Especially how it’s a lot easier to become a better person when you share that journey with others.

Looking for suggestions for accounts to follow on here. Looking for interesting ideas, different perspectives, etc. I’d like a feed that leaves me feeling more curious about the world and more motivated to engage with that world. Suggest away!

This was a fascinating read. I’ve seen places layoff employees so they can “invest” in AI-tools and it’s struck me as premature and shortsighted.

The more I spend time engaged in my offline #community, the less I want to post to social media. But to get to the point of engaging more offline required real effort—a lot more than the easy dopamine hit of getting some comments and reactions on Facebook.

What are your 3 favorite R.E.M. songs?

The first news site that I check each day is my county’s online newspaper. Next, I check my state news. Then, if I have time, I check on national/international news. I recently realized that my news consumption mirrors the zones of #permaculture.

Over the decades I’ve spent a lot of time online seeking #community and looking for “like-minded people.” And while I’ve made some amazing friends, recently I’ve felt a much stronger sense of community simply from attending church. The people there aren’t all like me, but maybe that’s the point.

Setting aside arguments about whether school vouchers are good or bad -- they are essentially pointless to people like me who live in areas so rural it takes 10 towns to compose a school district. My choices are: local public or kid spends at least 2 hours a day commuting.
