I am not making this up: Republicans have introduced legislation… to increase your bank fees.

Since FB pulled my account due to a glitch, hey, my band MAW is playing in March after a long hiatus. If you’re in the KC/Lawrence area, pop over and check us out.

been thinking a lot about this quote lately “There must have been a moment, at the beginning, where we could have said -- no. But somehow we missed it.” ― Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

(To the tune of "Eleanor Rigby") 🎵 Barbara McClintock Spends all her days counting genes in kernels of corncobs (It's all transposons) ... All these purple kernels Where do they all come from? 🎵

Paraphrasing a colleague jokingly told me, "maybe you can be less loud for a few years about issues to be safe". Let me tell you something, I lived that life in my childhood when people step by step lost their rights to be safe. Once day we opened our eyes and we were living a dictatorship.

The constant onslaught against science and human dignity in recent weeks has been very difficult. I'm proud to be part of the data-backed resistance. wapo.st/4i20QaY

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

One key takeaway from our AMAZING conversation with Dr. @meorive.bsky.social last week was the importance of recognizing when it's time to take a break and recharge your batteries. This week's bonus episode will discuss that and other insights. 🎧https://pod.link/1715048894

So I did this today: banged out a couple hundred words of a pitch while managing lab, sent it to the opinion page editor at the newspaper my parents still somehow get in print, and got back a "yes" in, I absolutely kid you not, under 15 minutes

As @jeremymberg.bsky.social correctly assessed at the time, the NIH memo that slashed overhead rates came from Trump/Musk, not anyone within the organization.

Republicans too scared to vote their conscience have one other option to honorably avoid endorsing the death of US democracy - they should resign

My lab has a position for a programmer--if you have programming skills and have recently left the NIH please contact me.

I can’t believe I’m posting this like some sort of Declaration of Independence fangirl, but #NoKingForAmerica

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

I am hiring a lab technician! If you know anyone who has experience with field studies, enjoys working with plants, and is a good communicator and hard worker, pls pass this along! The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal. Please re-skeet! careers.umich.edu/job_detail/2...

Just saw an email sent to a student of mine from a REU canceling their program due to staffing & federal research funding uncertainties. A REU was when I internalized my science ID & applying to grad school. If this continues, it will devastate my students #1 pathway to STEM careers.

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

🚨 Your House representative is now back home through February 23. That’s where we come in. With Trump and Elon Musk pulling off a billionaire coup in real time, this congressional recess is about turning up the heat like never before. Let’s get to work: indivisi.org/muskorus

I’m petty enough to really enjoy this video.

Why does the richest man in the world, who was neither elected nor vetted by Congress, need access to my tax information, my bank account information?

On Friday night, HHS ordered CDC to take down all flu vaccine campaign materials from its website. Materials are starting to come down. For example, a campaign explaining that flu shot can reduce flu severity from "wild to mild" is now offline. Left image is from Friday, right is now Meanwhile...

Democracy dies in broad daylight.

This is a program for teenagers with serious disabilities who are finishing high school and transitioning to their next steps in life. Trump just axed it, effective immediately, in the middle of the night, with no notice.

it was bad when the worst poster on my favorite website bought that website and made it terrible but it has been worse having that person also buy my country that i live in

Hell of a day to kill the Epidemic Intelligence Service.

I read this today and needed this words : Nothing is inevitable. Do not be alone and do not be dismayed. Find someone who is doing something you admire and join them. - Timothy Snyder, “On Tyranny”

"No voting on who gets to be people." - N.K. Jemisin, The Obelisk Gate

The Associated Press on Wednesday accused the White House of violating the First Amendment and called on the Trump administration to stop blocking its reporters from press events.

I've received a tip that access to NASA supercomputing services used for fundamental physics research has been disrupted. I was told in-process computation jobs were interrupted from January 22-29 and access hasn't been restored. If you're in this situation, message stevanzetti.12 on Signal.

Walking in to NASA’s JPL today as a woman in science leadership felt almost like a protest. They can take us off the webpages and the walls, but we will still be here, absolutely crushing it, and supporting our community while we do it. Happy International Day of Women in Science, everyone.

Wel, no surprise that Coyne used his blog (whyevolutionistrue) to argue with the SSE/SSB/ASN letter about definitions of sex. I'm not going to engage deeply with the letter here. Like any committee-drafted text it reflects compromises; I agree with some phrasing but some could have been clearer 1/N

I have a confession . . . I was an “overhead cost”. I was a beaker washer, agar plate pourer, research secretary. I was paid by “overhead cost” fees. Loved it. Those “overhead cost” jobs allowed this rural kid to become a physician. Please tag how #OverheadCostJob impact u.
