KNOXVILLE! ‘On International Women’s Day, we’re taking to the streets to fight back against the fascist takeover. Join us to defend our rights, our bodies, and our future. No permission needed—just show up and bring others.’ action.womensmarch.com/events/inter...

We did it! We caught Starship #transposons moving between #fungal species in the lab, including between species separated by ~100my. We think Starships are a mediator of HGT in fungi, akin to conjugative elements in bacteria. Check out the preprint. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

From an NIH source re. grant terminations "These searches are pulling in things based on 'other support' sections and biosketches, so science may be held up just because someone mentions that they serve on a DEIA committee, or has a completely different grant that uses a 'problematic' word. (cont)

Boston stands for science!!

A terrific perspective from Vivek Malhotra @naturecomms.bsky.social on the fundamental importance of pathways and mechanisms by which cells secrete proteins, ensuring their delivery in the correct quantities and at the appropriate times. Interesting section on unanswered questions. rdcu.be/ecb2B

“Any casual observer of the Supreme Court can see what many prestigious constitutional lawyers can’t, which is that the conservative justices are frequently accomplices to Trump’s assault on democracy,” writes Adam Serwer.

Looks like there are 3 NIH notices posted for public review this morning, set to be published tomorrow.

Several NIH people have now told me they believe DOGE folks are jumping on their Zoom orientation and high-level calls. They don't put their cameras on and don't ID themselves. If you have intel on this, i'm at asteinindc.09 on signal

And this one, too #StandUpforScience

I have an exciting opportunity to join my research team in Singapore @scelse.bsky.social as a PhD student to explore programmed cell death in biofilms. See below for more information and please share widely!

Unbelievable news. Pancreatic is one of the deadliest cancers. New paper shows personalized mRNA vaccines can induce durable T cells that attack pancreatic cancer, with 75% of patients cancer free at three years—far, far better than standard of care. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Join a world renowned marine lab in France. New Junior Professor Chair (CPJ) opened in the Biological Station in Roscoff. The position is focused on the ecological, evolutionary, and functional roles of marine fungi, crucial to understanding our oceans. www.sb-roscoff.fr/fr/2025/02/2...

If they truly believed they were saving America they'd be celebrating in the streets, not canceling town halls and hiding from their constituents.

This needs to be amplified.

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

In this work, authors identify a gut Bifidobacterium longum strain (FSHHK13M1) enhancing serum vitamin D metabolite levels in mice (n=32) + significantly improved bone structure, with possible suggested potential for osteoporosis outcomes & human therapy. 🔗 journals.asm.org/doi/full/10....

So excited to share this latest work by @kelseyhuus.bsky.social !!! She shows that flagellin in the human gut affects whether or not people develop fever in response to vaccine, and the amount of flagellin reflects diet

Thank you @nplb.bsky.social for speaking out in defense of patients, the US economy and our citizenship. Encouraged to see biopharma and investors among patients, health care providers, scientists and policy makers. www.nopatientleftbehind.org/defending-th...

The Trump Administration is maintaining the NIH grant freeze despite lawsuits challenging the order, a Nature article reported today. Science funding in the US is already lagging, leaving researchers in limbo. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

This excellent Nature paper from 2015 discussed multiple ways that sex is not binary, and why the idea of two sexes is simplistic. Required reading right now - please share! www.nature.com/articles/518... 🧪👨‍🔬🧬🖥️

HEADS UP! We need to give this story more attention. This is the next phase - investigations of those who criticize Trump, Musk or SCOTUS. It’s already started. It is a campaign of intimidation designed to silence criticism. wapo.st/3X8d75G
