Columbia cancelled her course on "Race, Media and International Affairs 101." So she decided to teach it over the summer— online.

The number of international students hit by the Trump administration's visa actions is likely much larger than reported. For example, Northwest Missouri State has 43 revocations--twice as many as the University of Michigan. The regional public angle here deserves more attention.

Ever looked really closely at a Large-billed Tern?

Yall wanna hear something extremely embarrassing? Before Trump’s election, a bunch of academics who lumbered rightward after being criticized by the left (Pinker, Dawkins, Krauss) wrote essays for a book that is coming out in July about the threats to academia from the left. YALL, THE TITLE!!

I'll tell you what chafes my hide though 1/10

UCLA *must* extend its resources to defend its noncitizen students, as other universities are doing. dailybruin.com/2025/04/17/u...

Hole-nesting birds adapt to the urbanised world by using human-made structures (drain pipes, ventilation openings, mailboxes etc). Report those unique places in an @inaturalist.bsky.social project run by @igstadnicki.bsky.social and help to protect wildlife. 🧪🌏🪶🪺 www.inaturalist.org/projects/urb...

The Dallas ICE office is involved in a mass removal effort targeting nearly 200 people — many without removal orders — scheduled to be deported to El Salvador today. This is not just cruel – it is lawless. I refuse to stay quiet while families are being torn apart, and lives are being put at risk.

It's Fustilarian Friday, so here's the latest statement from NSF's director, trying to dodge the news cycle. www.nsf.gov/updates-on-p...

Per source, NIH has been instructed to hold off from issuing ALL awards to Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, and Northwestern (including med schools) Agency staff have also been instructed to not speak about this funding freeze to grantees and applicants

Love birds and know demographic analyses? My lab is hiring a postdoc for 2 years to develop a population viability analysis for endangered Roseate Terns! Join our team, including collabs from @massaudubon.org & @audubon.org, among others. App review begins 15 May. careers.umass.edu/amherst/en-u...

Figure B, Figure F. How many of these #birds have you seen? #ColombiaResurveyProject #ornithology #AcademicWriting

Some species had an outsized role in shaping evolutionary theory. The Fiji Whistlers featured heavily in Ernst Mayr's development of the biological species concept and its application to allopatric taxa. In our new paper, we revisited this system with genomic data 🧵 doi.org/10.1093/sysb...

BREAKING:The National Science Foundation (NSF) has put a cork in its grantmaking pipeline after billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) set up shop at the agency this week. | Science | AAAS www.science.org/content/arti...

A lot of blood sweat and tears put into this one: we revisit Robert MacArthur's classic warbler study—with @eliotmiller.bsky.social and colleagues—using, among other techniques, fecal metabarcoding. 🧪🦉 📸 Ronnie d'Entremont royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/... @psubiodept.bsky.social

A brief distraction from all the terrible. A new preprint led by Katya Osipova and our brood parasitology, or perhaps parasitomics, team "Comparative population genomics reveals convergent adaptation across independent origins of avian obligate brood parasitism" : www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Steve Kerr wore a Harvard basketball shirt after the Warriors’ win tonight: “Yes, this is me supporting Harvard. Way to go. Way to stand up to the bully.”

CA Border Patrol claimed it's attack on the Central Valley farm working community in Kern County was targeting criminals. Turns out that wasn’t true, they were just profiling farm workers. We must confront this injustice head on!

Universities must unite! If the feds declared they would selectively punish auto manufacturers for carbon emissions, auto CEOs would be on planes that night for a joint press conference the next day about the threat to the economy. Unis must stands together!

Black Guans are large, turkey like birds found in the mountains of Panama and Costa Rica. They were once considered threatened due to hunting for food, but a ban on hunting and conservation efforts have helped populations rebound. 🪶 San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica

Science does not work like this. The only way you can set a timeline is if you have rigged the results in advance.

Seriously, who voted for this? www.youtube.com/watch?v=_65n...

“What difference does it make if a biotech company promotes misunderstanding about the practical and implications of their technology,” you ask, having apparently not noticed how the Trump administration is using that misunderstanding to weaken actual endangered species conservation policy.

“…science is the only way to generate the foundational knowledge that enables technology, medicine and an understanding of how the world works. The extraordinary success that has been American science makes it especially distressing to now witness its destruction.”

Brown-headed Cowbird message to host species everywhere:

really feel like writing something on how steep tariffs may destroy restaurants that depend on imported ingredients to replicate non-American flavors—and thus spark a movement toward more conservative, blander food scenes throughout the US

The rectangle below contains 900,000 small blue dots. Each represents a human being who had obtained legal status to be in the USA, but in the last couple days were told (by online app) that they now must leave immediately. www.cbc.ca/news/world/u...

An incredible conservation success story, the number of Yellow-eared Parrots was estimated to be about 80 birds in the 1990s. Today, about 3800 of these birds are found in the high Andes of Colombia. It was an incredible treat to spend time with these amazing birds. #birds #parrots #nature 🌿

Actual quote about the "dire wolves". “You can use the phylogenetic species concept to determine what you’re going to call a species… We are using the morphological species concept and saying, if they look like this animal, then they are the animal.” www.newscientist.com/article/2475...

NSF GRFP Awards by the Year: 2021 - 2074 2022 - 2193 2023 - 2555 2024 - 2036 2025 - 1000 Again, these funding cuts will have drastic longterm effects on the scientific future of the US....... @jeremymberg.bsky.social @altnih4science.bsky.social

Just like H5N1, SARS-CoV-2, and Ebola, mpox virus didn't come from a lab. In this case, it came from a squirrel. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Dang, only 1000 NSF GRFP awards this year... A more than 50% cut in the number of fellowships from last year. Congratulations to all of the fellows ! I am sad for the 1000+ people who should be added to this list that don't get this life-changing opportunity... www.research.gov/grfp/Awardee...

🧪 Time for a full status update at NSF! Let's look via four lenses: (1) New awards: 🚨 About 50% lower since Jan 20 (2) Future funding: 🚨🚨 Major uncertainty -- action alert! (3) Active awards: 🟡🟢 Ok relative to other agencies...? (4) Staff reductions: 🟡🚨 Some with 28% RIFs coming

Went all the way to the Middle East to try for Northern Wheatear and didn't see a single one, only for one to show up in the middle of New Mexico. Probably a leucorhoa (Greenland) ssp?

Trump's DHS erroneously sent an email to Ukrainians legally living in the U.S. under a humanitarian program telling them their status had been revoked and they had seven days to leave the country or the "federal government will find you."

What a game — public university beating private gives me joy every time — Houston 70, Duke 67 😆🏀 (Maybe shouldn’t have scrapped the herbarium!)

Who did this?
