This is one of the worst violations of research ethics I've ever seen. Manipulating people in online communities using deception, without consent, is not "low risk" and, as evidenced by the discourse in this Reddit post, resulted in harm. Great thread from Sarah, and I have additional thoughts. 🧵

“Trump replied,”stopping the war,” suggesting that not “taking the whole country” is a “pretty big concession.” Putin hasn’t taken #Ukraine because he can’t. Because of Ukrainian courage & resilience. To suggest this is a Russian concession is ludicrous & morally corrupt. www.cnn.com/2025/04/24/p...

Trump asked today, why didn’t Ukraine fight back in Crimea in 2014? As I wrote in my book, The War Came To Us, Ukraine’s decision to not fight against Russia’s invasion was largely influenced by behind-the-scenes pressure from the US. Here’s what then-interim President Oleksandr Turchynov told me:

The key chart right now: Usually US economic pain is cushioned by falling bond yields and a strengthening dollar, which mean lower interest rates and more spending power for consumers. This time we’re seeing the opposite, meaning the pain will be amplified.

We should expect exfiltration ops like this have happened in every system DOGE accessed and that Russia and other US adversaries already have the data. The logs were shut off because they know what they are doing is treasonous.

A reminder of a pretty etymology to brighten the day. The ‘daisy’ takes its name from the Old English ‘dæges ēage’, ‘day’s eye’, because it opens its petals at dawn, and closes them again at dusk.

Super interesting to see data backing up some of the culrural/attitudinal shifts I've observed during my lifetime

Happy Bat Appreciation Day! The German word for a bat, Fledermaus, means “flutter mouse.” The Basque word, saguzar, means “old mouse.” And the Estonian word, nahkhiir, means “leather mouse.” But to me (and to anyone who’s seen the picture below) the correct term for bats will always be “sky puppies”

NEW How the United States constitutional crisis is intensifying And what the US government should realise about a cavalier approach to obligations By me Substack emptycity.substack.com/p/how-the-un... Personal blog davidallengreen.com/2025/04/how-...

🚨🚨 This is huge news. Very welcome decision by the US District Court of Columbia finding that #Trump Administration's actions amounts to #criminalcontempt. This is a very strong signal to the US Government that the courts are not playing along their game. #constitutionalcrisis to be continued. 👇

1/4. On the White House’s theory, if they abduct you, get you on a helicopter, get to international waters, shoot you in the head, and drop your corpse into the ocean, that is legal, because it is the conduct of foreign affairs.

🧵DISMANTLING DEMOCRACY I've been keeping track of Trump actions - now up to 192. Here, I dig into 69 actions specifically targeted at undermining democracy, rule of law & suppressing dissent. It's been 12 weeks of assaults on democracy. based on christinapagel.substack.com/p/a-republic... 1/18

My new post mapping out 69 actions that President Trump has taken in the last twelve weeks to undermine democracy, undermine the rule of law, attack enemies, suppress dissent and control information. Do read and share. Full 🧵 tomorrow hopefully! christinapagel.substack.com/p/a-republic...

💥 There will be a debate in parliament on 24th April, on the trading relationship with EU, exquisitely timed to be a month before the big summit between VdL and Starmer. Please share if you feel you can (or simply write to your own MP!). hey-mp.uk?c=debate 🇪🇺🇬🇧

Andrew Chen, co-founder of one of my favorite denim brands, 3sixteen, breaks down how the tariffs affect his company IG 3sixteen

New post from me about Trump's tariffs and why Harold Macmillan was right - we Brits are truly Greece to America's Rome - because our Brexit-era compulsion to think everything was 'simple' has a Trumpian heir. A short thread. 1/n benansell.substack.com/p/simple

NEW 🧵 A quick thread of charts showing how Trump’s economic agenda is going so far: 1) US consumers are reacting very very negatively. These are the worst ratings for any US government’s economic policy since records began.

While Trump is the central figure with his love of tariffs, he's not alone in basically questioning the relationship between government and business. Companies built modern globalisation, national politicians don't understand or like it very much.

This is what empires look like when they fall inews.co.uk/opinion/trum...

What a massive numbty. President Donald Trump imposed 10% tariffs on Heard & McDonald Islands, uninhabited but for their US & U.K. military bases. “It takes around 10 days, depending on the weather, to get to Heard Island by ship from the port of Fremantle, near Perth in Western Australia,”

This is a thread of my favourite ever literal translations, starting with this one… In Greek, the word for a protest, εύπιστος, translates literally to “anger parade”

Brenna Trout Frey attorney resigns from her law firm: Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, in protest at its craven capitulation to Trump after it agreed to provide $100k free services to groups named by Trump because they had previously sued his administration www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...

I have no doubt the Le Pen verdict is deserved. A lot of the political fallout for her, the RN but also for the perceived credibility of the verdict, now depends on the duration of the ineligibility. 🧵

Pretty sure what we have seen today is Trump and Putin acting as allies to betray Ukraine and isolate Europe. What seems to have happened is this. 1) The US got Ukraine to agree a Black Sea ceasefire on the idea that if Rus broke it, the US would put more sanctions on Rus.

Excellent and detailed FT piece this week on the £100,000 "childcare trap". If someone earns £99,999 and claims the Governments childcare subsidies, then a £1 pay rise can *cost them* £20,000.

Trump is picking off the universities one by one and they are caving very quickly. www.politico.com/news/2025/03... Worth reposting this article i wrote the other week. christinapagel.substack.com/p/censor-pur...

🆕Public conclusive across different questions, in views on englishness. 75% of English people believe that non white citizens born here can be just as english as other english people - agreement across 2024 vote, age, education. (Repost to make clear sample England not Britain)

When you read this it becomes apparent that Elon Musk is a showman, nothing more. He's not an engineer. The whole thing is an act.

1. Reading some of the comments beneath this week's column, I'm struck once again by how fiercely resistant many people are to understanding how our food is produced, how it reaches us and how the system works. This willed ignorance is lethal. Short🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

🚨🚨"Surprise, surprise"; #Russia has rejected the US proposal for a ceasefire since this would according to Senior Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov give 'temporary respite' for Ukrainian troops.🧵 www.theguardian.com/world/live/2...

In Icelandic, a word for the haziness of pre-dawn is sauðljóst. It means “the time of day when there is just enough light to see your sheep”

As Honest Bob Jenrick tours the country repeating far-right conspiracy talking points about “two-tier sentencing”, here is the letter his own government sent to the Sentencing Council last year approving the very Guidelines he now claims are evidence of “two-tier Keir”. The man is a fraud.

NEW: The actions of Trump and Vance in recent weeks highlight something under-appreciated. The American right is now ideologically closer to countries like Russia, Turkey and in some senses China, than to the rest of the west (even the conservative west). My column: www.ft.com/content/3046...

Good to hear some innovative action happening here

🚨🚨 All of this. Another stellar instalment by Anne Applebaum. Some quotes here in 🧵

The left accelerationist case for Trump paints him as a vile vessel who will, nevertheless, achieve important goals: (1) make the US less militaristic & (2) empower the Global South. It makes intuitive sense bc Trump is weakening USG & Western alliances. But it’s deeply naive. Here's why: 🧵
