We talk a lot about Sendak—as we should. But Ruth Krauss was incredibly innovative with language. And Virginia Lee Burton did amazing things with visual layout and composition. I feel like they should all be the subjects of masterclasses. #kidlitchat

Okay, agent friends, it's #MSWL time! I'm an Associate Editor at Penguin Workshop, looking for middle grade and YA, as well as graphic novels in both categories. I love historical fiction, fantasy, and mysteries, and if you have something that combines those elements in a clever way, send it to me!

It's #MSWL day, you say? I have one of those! And it just got a shiny new update for 2025: featherflores.com/mswl/ Lots of specifics in here—give it a peek! ✨ I'm especially hungry for YA fantasy, romantasy, and gothic vibes rn. Agents, please reach out if something's a fit (or just to say hi 💞).

Happy #MSWL Day! I only accept agented submissions, but wanted to get into the fun. I'm an editor over at Chronicle Books, and I would love to find more MG novels this year—especially ones that feature queer kiddos with big feelings, are a KNIVES OUT-style mystery, or use horror as metaphor! 🏳️‍🌈🕵️😈

Sounds like a fitting one for this snowy winter! #kidlit

Hive mind! I’m looking for adult protagonists in picture books (fiction only, no fairy tales or tall tales or parent-child books). Looking for non-white adult protagonists, as in The Man Who Didn't Like Animals and Kamishibai Man. Any suggestions for me? #kidlitchat #canscaip #scbwi

Does a kettle to make coffee count? Or the microwave for snacks? Because otherwise I've got nothing. It's quite possible I do my best writing in the shower. #kidlitchat

Talked to Grade 1s today for #WorldReadAloudDay. I asked how long they thought it took from acceptance of a #picturebook manuscript to it being on shelves. One guessed 2 years, one guessed 10,000 years. Told them it was somewhere in between, but it felt like the latter. #kidlit

Had a lovely time in the woods yesterday, working on the next book in the Rumie series. I love that I get to spend so much time in nature with these two cuties! #picturebookprocess

Children's writers have done a great job of building online community--but sometimes meeting people in person is exactly what you need @karenkrossing.bsky.social @danachurchwriter.bsky.social @lanabutton.bsky.social @deborahkerbel.com @jessicavitalis.bsky.social @nadialhohn.bsky.social

I write picture books, so the Caldecotts are a big deal. Congratulations to all! That said, the Caldecotts are for art. I wish everyone celebrated the Charlotte Zolotow award, for best writing in a picture book, the same way—wouldn’t it be amazing if they were as well known?! #kidlitchat

When picture books are adapted for film it either leans into the emotion or message of the book (Where the Wild Things Are; Grinch) or the emotion the book evokes (Peter Rabbit). Narrative books that work best. I don’t see me ever writing a narrative book that would works #kidlitchat

Still trying to figure out Instagram for author community. I feel like it’s a good place to amplify the work of others, which has led to me connecting with people I wouldn’t otherwise. But is it community? Not sure... #kidlitchat

I’m grateful for my #SCBWI chapter, which holds monthly zoom chats for published authors. Sometimes, you don’t even know what you don’t know. But then someone asks about taxes, or foreign rights, or a particular publisher—it’s like learning through a cozy gossip, and it’s so useful #kidlitchat

It’s #portfolioDay! I will be scrolling. Illustrators, I’m an executive art director at Scholastic who oversees picture books and beginning readers (www.brianlarossa.com/work/scholas...). Interested in working together? I’ve created a contact form just for you! 🤗 ⬇️✨ bit.ly/LaRossa_Illu...

What's new in the world of READ posters?

Writing resolutions for 2025: be accountable to my kidlit community by making sure I'm giving back. As part of that, I'll be hosting a monthly picture book club overseen by SCBWI-Canada East. Still figuring out what else I can take on that's manageable! #kidlitchat

.@uw-english prof Jennifer Harris and Bryan Waterman (NYU) have co-edited a new critical edition of William Hill Brown's The Power of Sympathy and Other Writings. Many of Brown's plots draw on contemporary scandal and intrigue among the elite of Boston. https://buff.ly/3DkPArg

Jennifer Harris (@mypbjam.bsky.social) and I are pleased to share the release of our @broadviewpress.bsky.social edition of William Hill Brown's THE POWER OF SYMPATHY (1789). Here's a short thread about the book, which its original printer, Isaiah Thomas, marketed as the first American novel. 🧵🗃️

There's a lot that needs to be done about this, and it will only get worse before it gets better. But right this second, one step today is, if you are gift shopping, GIVE BOOKS. Shop at your local bookseller, or they may not exist next year. This is the season the sustains them.

Hard to narrow down favorite #picturebooks from 2024! Definitely: Champ by Payam Ebrahimi, Tove and the Island With No Address by Lauren Soloy, X. Fang’s We Are Definitely Human… and my book! The Keeper of Stars (illus Dorothy Leung). Because you get to love your own work, right?! #kidlitchat
