So BIG SIGH at least I know I’ve fully exhausted the DIY route and can feel like I’ve “earned” the option to “spend money to solve the problem.”

The whole thing isn’t necessarily a total loss because I can still potentially use it for other (less heavy) things, but it is a MAJOR bummer to have spent so much time trying desperately to make this work only to conclude: “I should have just bought the thing in the first place.”

Soooo um, there was a cruel moment of realization during some testing last night that my DIY “solution” is not going to be able to support the necessary weight. I say again: I should not have listened to the caterpillars. 🤦‍♀️

—the first time through), supernatural elements that borders urban fantasy at times, and it’s written sincerely without being melodramatic, at least in my opinion. The main catch is physical copies can be a little tricky to find even though the series isn’t that old (last book published in 2014).

I’m genuinely not sure if you’ll like it or not, but I love it to pieces & have an ADHD friend I talked into reading it that likes it, so… The Soul Screamers book series by Rachel Vincent. Granted, the characters are teenagers, but there is romance (including a burn so slow I missed a lot of it—

Thanks! 💖 The hat gave me a bit of a fight to get the size just right but it was so worth it!

Oh yeah, those are factors for me too; I think if I could knit faster it would be more fun, at least. The last big (crochet) project I did was a Super Star blanket for my baby nephew! I’ve made some crochet doll clothes since then but the only one I have a good photo of right now is a Barbie hat 👒

I *can* do both, but I mostly just crochet these days because it works up faster. (Although I did recently get some tiny double-point needles hoping that maybe knitting doll clothes will be a more enjoyable knitting experience for me.)

I am in FAR too deep to quit now—it WILL be finished and used!!—but like, the amount of work I have put into this DIY version already is definitely more than $20 worth of effort. Sometimes I am just too stubborn for my own good. 🙃

Yeah, my take is the same. I’ve seen the “don’t compare an artist’s OCs” sentiment around before and it’s always just felt kinda weird to me coming from fandom spaces where like 95% of OCs are *proudly* proclaimed to be inspired by other things. 🤷‍♀️

And I think I forgot to add this when I reposted it last year, but if you’re curious about the process behind the art, this is actually one rare occasion where I made a time lapse video! youtu.be/nYMT0AF8MdU?...

I actually got this Draculaura for my birthday last month, I’ve just been too short on spoons to take many doll photos. But she’s such a perfect fit for Valentine’s Day and sooo pretty (one of my favorite G3 Drac’s so far!), I had to squeeze in a few today!

(This is why I don’t post art stuff more often than I do now and I hate it.)

Your skills and willingness to learn are way more important than how fancy/expensive the supplies are, or (for digital art specifically) how many brush sets you have.

Again, as promised, if you’re interested in more of the details of this project, I have as much as I could manage written out on: DeviantArt: www.deviantart.com/mysticsparkl... and Tumblr: www.tumblr.com/mysticsparkl...

It’s not the most amazing website ever & there’s still more complicated things I’d love to add to it one day, but I kinda already bit off more than my extremely limited coding skills could chew as it is. 😅 At least it’s functional and fairly clean/easy to understand!

As usual, if you’re really interested in the nitty-gritty of how this thing came together, I’ve got that written out on DeviantArt or Tumblr (links below), but the TL;DR is I know picking color palettes can be hard & I know A LOT about Ohuhu markers, so I wanted to make a (hopefully) useful tool.

I did also get two of the Dream Besties recently, but I’m not sure if they count since they’re so different from “normal” Barbies.

It was kind of a similar story with me; There’s a lavender-haired mermaid Barbie with a similar face mold to this one that coaxed me back into purchasing Barbie dolls. The mermaid + body donor, and now Ballet Wishes are the first Barbies I’ve bought in roughly a decade!

Maybe it’s just my imagination but I think mine also looks just the tiniest bit happier/has the slightest hint more of a smile than some of the other pictures I’ve seen online, which is nice! …Oh dear, now I have to decide what to name her 🙈

Algorithm pandering can still be enjoyable if it’s handled well. Pre-vlogs Baylee was actually my favorite for that reason. I’m glad the vlog format works well for her & she seems happier that way, but I will always personally miss the more tightly edited & focused video format.

Yeah, I get the algorithm side of it—Baylee (pre-vlogs) & Kasey both trend towards more of that kind of content, but they don’t actively irritate me with it the way some channels do because their approach just always felt more genuine for various reasons.
