The horrifying truth is a big reason fascism happens is this isn't actually true. Living under fascism as part of the protected class means not much changes - so most people just go along with it. You need to speak out against persecution for it's own sake - not just because "it might affect me".

When I was a child, I read stories of monsters that hoarded all the wealth and kept the townsfolk poor. The point of these stories was this was an evil thing to do, and those brave souls that struck out and killed these monsters were called heroes. Today we could use more heroes.
