“We can now think of developing a new type of environmentally friendly farming with crops that require less artificial fertiliser,” said Dr Myriam Charpentier. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Another dataset I like is from the National Atmospheric Deposition Program, which has maps of the US that show we fixed the acid rain problem by implementing stricter emission controls on power plants. nadp.slh.wisc.edu/maps-data/nt...

This is a good news and the upcoming JWST observations may confirm this trend. Planetary Defense in action!

I’m worried that many Americans have no idea what democracy even means, why it’s important, how it relates to our nation’s history, which is barely taught to begin with. Dems should be running civic workshops and teach-ins to explain, wild as it seems, why democracy is better than a dictatorship.

If there's one thing you know about bacteria, it's that they're too small to see with the unaided eye, right? Wrong. Buried in the sediments around Caribbean mangroves is the largest known bacteria, Thiomargarita magnifica. It's the size of a human eyelash (~1 cm). (📷: Tomas Tyml)

I’m telling you @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social, please watch this. This is the energy. Not egg prices and book tours and strongly worded letters. It’s time to take the gloves off.

“Removing all internal trade protections [in Canada] could lower prices by up to 15 per cent, boost productivity by up to seven per cent and add up to $200 billion to the domestic economy.”

NEW UPDATE to Some Actions That Are Not Protesting or Voting. - a few people have written to me to ask if I could include HEADINGS and I have done so. Also added a few more ideas. docs.google.com/document/d/1...

So I did this today: banged out a couple hundred words of a pitch while managing lab, sent it to the opinion page editor at the newspaper my parents still somehow get in print, and got back a "yes" in, I absolutely kid you not, under 15 minutes

Must watch speech by neuroscientist Kailyn Price at a HHS rally protesting funding cuts to science. "Cutting indirect costs is like telling a football team to work with only the players. No lights for the field, no physical therapists for the players, no water for the showers."

NO KINGS, ONLY TRAINS is a pretty great 2028 slogan for anyone who wants it

25% of U.S. adults say the "Department" of Government Efficiency (DOGE) should be eliminated, the highest percentage for any department d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net/documents/ec...

Are there any tools that tell you how much of your tax bill goes to which departments, agencies, etc.? Like if someone is paying $20,000 in federal income tax, exactly how many $ go to National Park Service, to NIH grants, to the Navy?

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

I can’t remember where I read this, but it’s important: Why is it that when people think about traveling to the past, they worry about doing something small that will drastically change the present, but no one in the present thinks that doing something small today can drastically change the future?

It’s even more clear that this isn’t about “waste” when you show it as a proportion of total nonfarm employment.

Whenever you hear someone sneer about scientific research that seems useless to them — “they’re studying the spit of lizards?!” — remind them that’s exactly how we got Ozempic. globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

Population predictions are like a plodding train: you can predict the future with pretty good accuracy by seeing where the tracks are headed. If you care about progressive values, think about this map and its implications for housing strategy in your city and state.

I feel like I'm going insane every time I see a media story about DOGE that doesn't also mention the fact that the Government Accountability Office exists and performs the exact function that DOGE pretends to, only in a credibly constitutional, non-partisan, and conflict-of-interest-free manner

It looks more like this: five homes replacing one or two.

>90% of unvaccinated individuals who come into contact with a measles-infected person will contract measles. The recommended 2-dose MMR vaccine is 99% effective in preventing measles infection.

laying off the EIS cohort right now - between flu, Ebola, and other stuff - is basically the equivalent of firing Mulder and Scully around mid-late season 2 of The X-Files. horrible idea. hope you like aliens you dumb assholes

If this reporting stands up (and it appears confirmed by multiple sources): devastating. The EIS is the front-line SWAT team of disease detection in the US and globally, and also the training ground for new generations of public health workers. No EIS, no boots on the ground for outbreaks. ->

These traitors are dismantling all of our defenses.

If you're worried about vaccine availability moving forward talk to your pediatricians. While there is a routine schedule, there is flexibility. For example Gardasil is usually given at 11 but can be dosed as early as 9. MMR is given at 12 and 48 months but dose 2 can be given earlier.

My former law school dean, Harold Koh, used to admonish incoming law students to "Never let your skill exceed your virtue." A while back, I wrote about how lawyers, in particular, have skills they can use for good or evil. Reupping here cafe.com/notes-from-c...

Am I a little sore? Yes. 😅 Will I regret it? Absolutely not. 💪 Anyway, check if you’re eligible for vaccine boosters and get those updated today: www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp...

The Stonewall Inn released a response to the National Parks Service removing the word transgender from the park outside of the Inn. A great reminder that we have to look after each other

Talking about Stonewall of all things without talking about trans folks and trans history is kinda like talking about the American Revolution without talking about George Washington.

I am begging the Democratic Party to create a media spectacle. Myself & dozens of other political communication experts will coach you for free.

The Stonewall Riots happened because trans people, particularly of color, rose up against state violence. You can’t even begin to tell the story without our trans ancestors and elders. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/13/n...

Our introduction to Bayesian Data Analysis underwent a major revision (it was too long at 1000 pages, so we moved some 400 pages into online). Currently in production but freely available forever: bruno.nicenboim.me/bayescogsci/

More important than ever: Know Your Rights.

Those that were laid off, here is a resource for you.

Myth: DEI policies have been outlawed and force companies to hire unqualified candidates. Fact: DEI policies level the playing field and are still very much legal. Today, I'm co-leading a group of state AGs rolling out guidance for employers on DEI initiatives in the workplace.

"Stories change minds. Stories change people, full stop." Does anybody seriously believe the chuds have better stories to tell than we do? Get cracking. Write, tell, listen, draw, dramatize.

Measles is WAY more contagious than COVID-19; spreads like wildfire anywhere there are unvaccinated populations. And once it gets a foothold in one state, more chances for outbreaks elsewhere. Very, very dangerous for public health.

Want to participate in another act of resistance as we build toward the strike? Take a look at this spreadsheet shared by one of our coalition members to see what companies to support (or not): docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

After this is over we’re bringing pro-people programs like the CFPB back 10x bigger than before

#medsky#pedsky#idsky#immunosky 🧪 In the midst of all of the scary headlines recently, I thought I could take a moment to share a bit of good news: for the first time in history, a malaria vaccine with >90% efficacy seems to be within reach! Here’s why that’s a really big deal for EVERYONE 🧵

Here is the pre-RFK vaccination schedule for your kids. Please download it before he is confirmed and changes/deletes it. Give it to your pediatrician and say this is the schedule you want your kids on. Making this my pinned post.

I tell students in the first week of class that they need to practice speaking up in class so that one day, when they have something important to say that they feel strongly about, they won't be scared. 3 students, all women, who haven't spoken in the 1st 2 weeks spoke up today.

One thing Democratic leadership could do right now is to name an alternate HHS secretary--someone to provide ongoing public updates and health information. And do it for other departments too. Start showing voters what a Democratic government would look like--press conferences, speeches, all of it.

last spring, after a 2 year pause in client work, I noticed a significant uptick in clients asking for line+bar+pie charts 📈📊 even tho they come to me (I thought) for bespoke #dataviz. I wrote about it here: www.shirleywu.studio/notebook/202... fellow #dataviz friends have you experienced the same?
