A rhetorical question but one I can't help but answer: Result of being the leader of one of the richest countries in the world, host to the richest companies globally and the power of the Presidential system. A deadly mix.

Globally stock mkts ↓ b/c of US tariffs. Wall St. hit bad; worst sell-off since '20. Fears of #recession have gripped the world. One reason for US trade deficit & unequal #tariffs is b/c the US trades with poor countries. Cannot be corrected by reciprocal tariffs. tinyurl.com/36xu9r7u The Guardian:

No amount of money in the world can compensate for a destroyed reputation. Ref: Elon Musk.

YouGov poll: 60% Americans oppose deporting immigrants without criminal convictions/want them to challenge their deportation in court. Dems: 89%; Independents: 62%; Repubs: 34%. This means the majority of Republicans are fine with the unjust deportations. tinyurl.com/ycfy4rkb

26% #tariffs on Indian exports to the US are here, despite all the attempted diplomacy. Textiles, Pharma, Liquor, Dairy products, meat, food - all these prods will cost more in the US, reducing their market share. Sales of Indian shrimp and other seafood products will be hit badly.

A 2015 book, The Turn of the Tortoise by TN Ninan, explores the hypothesis that societies get more corrupt as they start on the growth curve, corruption reducing only after incomes rise. No coincidence that wealth & low levels of corruption go together. #booksky 💙📚

Farming supports over 700m in India, nearly 1/2 the pop. Agriculture employs nearly 1/2 of India's workforce. Farmer suicides r common in India, if crops fail, debt high. People starve. But less than 2% Americans depend on farming. I will not buy cheap US agricultural produce. tinyurl.com/rcrddfr9

India's Modi will be 75 this year and some opposition parties are calling for him to step down because of his age. However, India has a long tradition having old people for PMs so that won't work.

After 9/11, NATO countries & also Australia, Canada & Denmark sent troops to Afghanistan when the US wanted help. UK lost 457 troops, Canada 159, France 90, Germany 62, Denmark 43...a lot relative to their population. Denmark has a population of just 5.5m. (From the Wiki).

Foreigners living in the US are insecure. They are deleting their past messages critical of the US admin, even private messages on WhatsApp. They are deleting old articles, social media accounts and exchanging passwords with their spouses. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I am not using my full name anymore on my profile. Will probably change the profile picture soon.

#China - Japan relationship is improving. This isn't only because #Japan is aware of China's rising power, but also a way of managing an increasingly aggressive US. www.reuters.com/world/china-...

USA is not just one of the richest countries in the world, the top 5 cos. by mkt capitalization (2024) are US cos. (Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon) & in the top 20, 14 cos. are US cos. Cannot help but wonder whether this can be sustained in the coming years. tinyurl.com/yf5nn2za

If I had time-travelled to 2025 I might have mistaken this world for an alternate universe.

The Turkey protests are a reminder to authoritarians. If you don't heed term limits, people will try & enforce them. Better quit before you are thrown out, otherwise all you will face is humiliation and derision by coming generations. World history is proof of that. Yet, authoritarians don't learn.

Maybe it's time for Indian Americans and Indians in America to come back, at least the academics. They are needed here. #Education theprint.in/india/educat...

Overstaffed govt=inefficiency? Nope. Indian govt. is known to be understaffed, but efficiency is not the name of the game. In fact understaffing is seen to be the cause of inefficiencies. This letter from an editor of The Economist says western govts. are inefficient. I believe the opposite.

When a country breaks international laws, like the Geneva Conventions for example, international courts have no teeth more often than not. But there is one fall-out for the country breaking them – insurgency. The regime then becomes more draconian and breaks more laws.

Trump just said that that India's Modi is a very smart man and that there have been some very "good talks" between them...can't help but think that Modi has buttered his counterpart really well. We'll see what April brings, whether Modi can outwit Trump. www.ndtv.com/world-news/t...

The 5 most-used (active users) social networks (Feb '25) are Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp & TikTok. #Bluesky doesn't figure in the top 15; X-Twitter is at 14 & Reddit, 12. I use only WhatsApp & Bluesky though I have inactive accounts on some others. www.statista.com/statistics/2...

According to an IMF survey, inflation in India will keep coming down and reach 4% by 2029. India’s inflation rate has risen in the last decade but decreasing since 2010. www.statista.com/statistics/2...

Elon Musk’s xAI firm merged with X-Twitter, paying $33bn to buy it. As both cos. are private and controlled by Musk, transaction is likely a stock swap, with X investors getting paid out in xAI shares. This must have been done to protect X investors. www.cnbc.com/2025/03/28/e...

If you are an Indian national or NRI or OCI with some pull in Indian media and any degree of interest in protecting vulnerable Indian nationals in the US, please get in touch. We have work to do and I need to coordinate help.

#Tariffs are apparently being used to bully #Canada into becoming a U.S. state and Greenlanders don't want to be Americans either....who would have thought that these countries were eager to give up their sovereignty?

Are wealth & happiness co-related? World Happiness report tells us Yes, but stats are well, stats. #Sweden, the 4th happiest has a higher suicide rate than many "unhappy" countries. Several rich happy countries are in the top 10 for suicide rates; Africa has low rates. Worth introspection.

Something to think about. From Frederick Joseph/Insta

It looks like we’re getting close to this happening. This will be interesting….to put it lightly. apple.news/A0Wnipu5DRV-...
