#BreakingNews On 3/21/25 we received a near total termination of our federal contract for legal services under the Unaccompanied Children Program (UCP). No child should ever face a heartless immigration system w/o a lawyer by their side. #SaveUCP Read: www.immdef.org/blog/ucpcont...

Just for the record, I'm a former dishwasher, busgirl, and waitress with a GED.

Tonight an unbelievable **34,000 people** gathered for our Denver rally to take on billionaires and win our country back. This was the largest political gathering in Denver since Obama in 2008. Also bigger than the 2024 DNC. And the largest ever rally in Bernie’s career (and obviously, mine too).

“…never in the history of the world has a Nation lost its democracy by a successful struggle to defend its democracy. We must not be defeated by the fear of the very danger which we are preparing to resist…The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." -FDR, 1941

Elon Musk, who comes from apartheid-era South Africa, doesn't have the foggiest idea how a constitutional democracy works. But what excuse do his colleagues have? My latest @postopinions.bsky.social column, on Trump's trashing of 800 years of due process. Gift link. wapo.st/4hwKarw

Rachel Carson's lost serenade to the science of the sky, found and illustrated

"True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.” —FDR, 1944

Basketball fans across America have filled out their brackets using all kinds of analysis, but probably nobody else is using Walk Score to determine NCAA predictions. Here’s how the teams would fare.

Love this essay/manifesto by @anandwrites.bsky.social "Because having, and nurturing, in your life a sphere for joy and connection and community and love and food and music and human difference and living and letting live is everything they are not and is everything they are trying to take away."

We need street network reform, not just housing, to create abundant, thriving, healthy communities.

At Republican Congressman Mike Flood's town hall last night in Nebraska, the crowd broke out in chants of "tax the rich." They're right. Here's why.

Millionaires are officially done paying into Social Security for the rest of 2025 as of today.  If we want to ensure Social Security’s long term future, we must scrap the cap and make the wealthy pay their fair share.

Would like to report some gang tattoos.

China has the battery materials market cornered, but one U.S. startup's clever silicon tech might break the country's stranglehold. techcrunch.com/2025/03/18/c...

I know this first hand. When I was a child, my entire community was branded as spies and sabateurs, justifying our internment inside barbed wire camps for years without due process, trial or charge.

NEWS: After an emergency meeting of Indivisible groups across the country, Indivisible is officially calling on Senate Minority Leader Schumer to step down from his leadership position. indivisible.org/statements/i...

Five years after COVID-19 was officially declared a pandemic, Donald Trump's botched response remains one of the worst moments our nation experienced during his first term in office.  Here are other moments you've probably forgotten. https://youtu.be/gdstZDCCgAc?si=_RiziFsySPY9mjx7

The FBI is trying to criminalize Habitat for Humanity for receiving climate grants from the EPA. Yes, the nonprofit that builds houses for low-income people. This clearly demonstrates just how absurd and extreme the Trump regime has become. It's targeted harassment.

KEEP CALLING. PEEL OFF ALL DEM SENATORS YOU CAN. ☎️: (202) 224-3121 Tell them to vote NO on Cloture and NO on CR. Vote is pushed to after 1:15ish for now. Situation is fluid. The only public YES votes are Schumer and Fetterman. They need 7-8 total. KEEP CALLING. Call retiring Senators too!

Trump finds that trashing the rule of law also trashes the economy. My latest column, on Trump's ad hoc presidency -- with bonus quotes from Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek to remind Republicans why they once cared about the free market. Gift link. wapo.st/3FwxJi7

Miami cycle lanes 🚲 🌴 Even the most difficult journey starts with one single small step.

The oil industry buys off Congress. No action on climate. The NRA buys off Congress. No action on guns. Insurance companies buy off Congress. No action on health care. The list goes on and on. Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction.

Yesterday I revisited Mel Gibson's drunken phone calls from when he became a convicted abuser and they sounded a lot like this. "I am focusing on terrorizing you while you should be focused on thanking me."

As Trump tries to dismantle the Department of Education, remember that his plan to cut the corporate tax rate to 15% would give the 100 largest corporations a tax cut larger than the entire department's K-12 budget. Really think about how twisted this all is.

I said it 30 years ago and I'll say it again today: you cannot balance the budget on the backs of working people.

"Practice kindness all day to everybody and you will realize you're already in heaven now." On Jack Kerouac's birthday, his beautiful letter to his first wife turned lifelong friend about kindness and the illusion of the self

OUT TODAY: How is the US electricity transition doing? WIND+SOLAR OVER TOOK COAL: Wind and solar now at 17% of US electricity supply; coal falls to a record low of 15%. Only 6 years ago in 2018, coal generation was x3 that of wind and solar🤯

Nearly 13 million people in the U.S. hold green cards.  Tens of thousands more are here temporarily as foreign students and professors.  All are now in danger of being arrested by the Trump regime if they exercise their First Amendment rights.

And as if we can instantly measure all results. "The tyranny of the quantifiable," an environmentalist said to me long ago, and so much of what matters most is not quantifiable or efficient or profitable in the narrow sense, and that's kind of what all this is about. So thank you Ms Kabas.

My latest article on Our World in Data, looking at foreign aid and the difference we can make with personal donations: ourworldindata.org/foreign-aid-...

"Amazon loves to disrupt, talking a big game about 'free markets and personal liberties' — but let someone attempt to do unto Amazon as Amazon did unto its forebears, and the company will go running to Big Government for a legal bailout... You’ll find this cowardice up and down the tech stack."

“…the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerated the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism: ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power.” - FDR, 1938

“People do not die for us immediately, but remain bathed in a sort of aura of life which bears no relation to true immortality but through which they continue to occupy our thoughts in the same way as when they were alive.“ Marcel Proust on death #speechwriter

Pretty sure he has a security detail and some sense of where people might be protesting. Time Magazine says hundreds are dead; the Trump-Vance plan is for far more Ukrainians to die, and Ukraine to lose its sovereignty and become a colony of Russia, aka permanent loss of rights and nationhood.

"If we were not so single-minded about keeping our lives moving... perhaps a huge silence might interrupt this sadness of never understanding ourselves..." Neruda's stunning ode to silence:

Walkable neighborhoods and buildings that frame the public realm should be part of any fire rebuilding effort in Pacific Palisades and Altadena, experts report to CNU.
