Let’s go way back for Day 16 of #BlackVinyl! “Brown Sugar” was released by jazz organist Freddie Roach (from the Boogie Down Bronx!) in 1964 and has plenty of funk!

This #Caturday continues…

Any talk you hear from the current administration about making the US more competitive in science and technology is utter bullshit. What they are doing is sabotaging our country for years if not decades to come.

But yes, let’s cut that terribly wasteful science funding… 😭

Reese says “Happy #Caturday!”

Let’s get funky for Day 15 of #BlackVinyl! Love this one by The Meters - “Rejuvenation” came out in 1974. Maybe you don’t know this one, but these songs have sure been covered and sampled a lot!

Dr. Edward Bouchet was from Connecticut, the first African American to earn a PhD in #Physics (in 1876!). His thesis focused on refraction (“On Measuring #Refractive Indices”). #28DaysOfBlackSTEMHistory #BlackHistoryMonth www.tgs.northwestern.edu/diversity/re...

Happy weekend! Let’s disco! Today’s day 15 of #Blackvinyl is a disco classic. This is LaBelle’’s 1974 amazing release “Nightbirds” - with the single that you all know -“Lady Marmalade.”

Day 14 of #BlackVinyl is something very different: Herbie Hancock’s 11th album “Sextant” from 1973. It’s just three long tracks, full of experimental “avant-funk” sound.

The federal government has historically discriminated against Black farmers. The recent funding halt from the Trump administration presents yet another hurdle to those who have spent decades fighting for equity in farming.

Pretty ironic that this is the actual current cover of Time Magazine

I’m beginning to think that next week…is definitely not going to be like this week. I sense that things are going to escalate very quickly. Please take care of each other.

Heads up that my #BlackVinyl post is going to be late because, well .. you’ll see. 😎

Watching oligarchs discover that even they need the government so they can fly (even private planes!) and not die of nuclear meltdown and/or the next pandemic…

Dr. Emmett Chapelle earned a PhD in #biochemistry. He pioneered the use of #luciferase and #luciferin (which in fireflies leads to flashing light signals) to detect life…. #28DaysOfBlackSTEMHistory #BlackHistoryMonth www.phillytrib.com/special_sect...

NSF fired 168 employees, leaving the agency less equipped to fund a wide range of scientific research.

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

Octavia Butler was a black female science fiction writer who won several awards for her works, including Hugo, Locus, and Nebula awards. In 1995, Butler became the first science-fiction writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship.

My course (The Future of Tropical Rain Forests) was one of the ones stripped of its GenEd designation. I found out by checking the list linked in the article. I don’t know who reviewed or why it was deemed inappropriate. No one informed me, my Chair, or my Dean. www.alligator.org/article/2025...

Boldness enhanced by the thought that Reese was getting tacos and she wasn’t. (Cats don’t get tacos either…)

I used to joke that “I’m not a mad scientist, I’m just a disappointed scientist.” I’m mad now.

Going to go hang out in Stardew Valley for a bit. The Mayor might be up to some hanky-panky but he seems to have been democratically elected and there aren’t any cops.

Ordered!

Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office 😭 It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.
