Oooo boy, yeah, it is a doozy. An astounding depiction of broken, flawed characters. I’ve never wanted to smack fictional characters up the side of the head more than when watch/reading that.

Did you pick the example locale in Canada because the town is named “Balzac”?
If anyone is wondering, it’s pronounced exactly like you would expect, and it’s funny every time.

They are not free services. If a private company is doing something involving you where you are not paying them, then you’re the product, not the customer.

I’m not sure why the assumption is that it would be mandatory. It would be easy enough to be an opt-in system.

Gasoline is not pure carbon, but by weight it is *mostly* carbon. Most of the other weight fractions (Nitrogen, sulfur) make really bad pollutants.
So, the number seems to make sense from a back-of-the-envelope point of view.
Oxygen is heavy.

I haven’t vetted the actual number, but oxidizing 1 carbon atom (12MW) creates 1 CO2 molecule (44MW). That means every 1g of carbon burned creates 3.7g of CO2. Burning 6lb of carbon produces 22lbs of CO2. This doesn’t include NOx, which is generated at least partially as a completely side reaction.

I’m a fan of speed cameras because it means less interaction between police officers and the public. No one has been shot with a bullet from a camera.
The placement of the cameras can still be done in a racist way, but enforcement isn’t: all speeders at a particular location are treated equally.

If we are under the “golden dome”, then none of our actual allies can help us. Why would we do that to ourselves?
The Liberals put a conservative in charge so that Canadians would vote to not put a conservative in charge. And people voted for that, thinking we would get something different.

College is only useful if students want to learn the subject matter. Reality is, most people going through it don’t. And that’s not a judgement on them from me. They’re just doing what they need to do to survive in this society.

Moral panic is right. I’m pretty anti-AI but the problem here isn’t the AI: it’s the assumption that school grades are reflective of competency.
We’ve forced people who don’t want to be in college to go to college, so they’re doing whatever they can to get through it.

Yeah, it’s really not something the world needs more of
It’s not even interesting. There’s absolutely no educational value to it. It’s all obviously fake, and there’s nothing more to say
As much as I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve watched of yours, I’d probably skip this because it just sounds boring.

I’m not British, so I already don’t understand what’s going on over there, but I am a chemical engineer and all I can say is: what?!?
What is controversial about heat pumps? It’s one of those rare overlaps between basic physics, cool processes (no pun intended), and incredible usefulness.

No, it doesn’t. If a stock drops by 99%, it’s technically better to have bought it when it was down 15% than when it was down 5%.
I’m pretty sure Hank is being facetious here.

Note: I actually came here to ask if I can be charged the new rate, because Dropout.tv is the best streaming value outside of (maybe) Nebula.
But seeing that in the FAQ is just disappointing and very “terms and conditions apply”.

This is actually rather wild. Credit cards expire. If changing your credit card information negates this promise that the price will stay the same, then it’s not a promise.
My credit card expires in June. So, despite being subscribed since 2021, my price is going up?

And I guess that brings me to a better summary: “Smart” gadgets that *improve* my control over the things I use, and allow me to do new things are useful & fun.
The problem is that most of the garbage ones don’t do that.

While I agree with a lot of your comments on algorithmic complacency and how people don’t “need” to think any more… I don’t think the kind of features I’m talking about are that. If I can make my lights turn off/on by “themselves”, why wouldn’t I? And the programming is a part of the fun challenge.

Sure, it adds some cost, but so does any home-brew solution I come up with to address my own weaknesses.
comment in response to

I’ve solved this by having remote power monitoring on all of my circuits in my house, versus the individual devices.
I guess ultimately I don’t think it’s that harmful to allow people to recognize and address their own weaknesses, as long as it isn’t actually getting in the way of functionality

I kind of agree with the criticism of the stove. It is a weak example. That said, I’m not necessarily forgetful as I am “paranoid”. I’ve never actually left the stove on, but it’s nice to be able to check my phone and confirm that.
Now, that’s not to say a “smart stove” is the right solution.
comment in response to
post
And none of them require a “mindset change”. Which is why they’re actually useful unlike 90% of “smart” features out there.
comment in response to
post
An IoT stove is useful if I can check to make sure I didn’t leave a burner on when I go out.
An IoT water detector and shutoff is useful so I can not worry about my house flooding while I’m away.
None of these things replace the basic, actually useful functionality.
comment in response to

“Smart” features are only convenient when they are *secondary* functionality.
Setting up payment-by-phone is useful because I can still stop in to the pet store to buy a treat when I don’t have my wallet.
Smart lights are convenient because I can program them to turn on/off together or in a timer.

It’s really nice to have stuff on here to talk about that’s not… all that.
There’s only so much I can do and reading nothing but awful things I can’t do anything about is not helpful to me or anyone else.
So yeah. Things are bad. But that doesn’t have to mean all things are bad. I appreciate this.

Hopefully the new AMS works better with longer tubes. My X1C fits a lot better with the AMSs in a drawer below, but it struggles some times with the distance, especially for “rough” filaments.

The larger build plate would be nice, but I think the dual nozzles is what’s driving me to want this printer: I have never used the “water soluble” support filament because it seems wasteful in day-to-day use from the purging requirement. If it doesn’t have to purge… I would use that all the time.

Still missing the point.
It’s not insane because it won’t work for America.
It’s insane because Canada doesn’t want it and gets to decide their own destiny, independent of any American political inconveniences.
comment in response to

Americans don’t seem to get that this decision is not theirs. Your president is talking about starting a bloody, deadly, and destructive war, not some political inconvenience.
A war. And not one overseas: one that would spill into American cities.

Canada can’t become a state because it’s a sovereign nation that does not want to become a state.
All the “Canada won’t become a state because of [American political reason]” is insulting to Canadians and insulting to the millions of people who would die in the war.

Also, the NEC was recently changed and now you can do some fancy stuff to add a circuit which would have violated the old code, as long as the system monitors overall amperage.
I honestly have not looked into it much, but Emporia keeps telling me I can do that with my setup (but I don’t need to).

“Sun powered car” is more like it
(although technically, all cars are powered by the sun, EVs are a lot more efficient about it).

People think a PHEV is the best of both worlds but it’s actually the *worst* of both worlds.
All the maintenance, failure-ridden parts, and fuel costs of a gasoline engine with the high cost of an electric vehicle.
A BEV is better in every single way, and that’s clear to anyone who cares to look.

Shameful, and also dumb. Canadians aren’t going to be Democrat voters.
The people of Canada have no reason to join the U.S. they’ve never wanted to join the U.S. They’ve always had the option to join the U.S., and they’ve rejected it violently twice.
Trump wants to make it a third time?
