The Lib Dems have called on the Government to bring forward emergency legislation today in Parliament to begin the seizure of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. Approx $300 billion of Russian assets have been frozen across the G7 and the EU, with around $31bn (£25bn) held in the UK alone.

Hope the PM gives Zelesnky some of his really good whiskey. Now that it's open and everything.

If the Trump state visit happens – and it now shouldn't – it'll be dogged by massive protests. Heck, even I would join it. A security nightmare for the Met.

A new Insta trend: workplaces (esp hospitals & care homes) in Germany show how they, how *we* all rely on migrants who work there, how they are part of this country, our friends, colleagues. We'd be poorer w/o them. They are appreciated. They are us. #GoodMorning, everyone [🎥 shortened; link below]

My musical tribute to the legendary singer and pianist Roberta Flack who has died at the age of 88.

Any increase in defence spending needs to be complemented by a hard look at defence procurement. There is no point increasing spending which will go straight out again. A good part of public procurement is a racket, and defence procurement the worst racket of all. ~ a public procurement lawyer

I have just, seriously, heard Nick Robinson on Radio 4 ask if Germany can seriously call itself a democracy if the CDU/CSU continue to refuse to include the AFD from consideration for power. What. The. Actual.... www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... At around 8:23:00 am

Whatever happens with German elections today, I thank Olaf for all he has done to help me to stay in this war for this long. His escalation management delays & drip feeding made the difference.

Hard agree

Brexit was the petri dish for all of this. Stamer should publish the Russia report that Johnson sat on.

Ever the rapist Trump’s US presented Ukraine with a document to access its minerals but offered almost nothing in return. Ukrainian officials were told not to sign an agreement with the U.S. on rare earth minerals because the document focused on U.S. interests apple.news/A5qE4P9C3R_a...

I agree. Do it. Excellent idea. We need his political culture, eloquence, grasp of facts, and empathy. We need his voice.

👇 Absolutely spot on. The "will of the people" is not what some gobby muppets say on X (or, for that matter, Bluesky, or Facebook, or LinkedIn, or whatever social network you care to name, owned by whatever interchangeable tech oligarch). It's represented by political parties and institutions.

Good morning to this man, and this man only #bbcqt

“How is the government failing to understand that you can’t implement an ambitious programme of change without robust government bodies? You can’t simultaneously appease corporate lobbyists, the Daily Mail, Times & Telegraph & deliver effective & beneficial policy?” 👏👏 👏@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

"Daddy says he owns you. Can you get me an ice cream?"

Yes he is.

Why do we still have these reprobates in the Lords? Would he have given Hitler part of the UK to end WW2? Time to be put out to pasture. www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/tory-p...

Day 1081 of #Russia's illegal all-out war on #Ukraine. Saturday, but I'm a little deflated. Nearly 60 posts yesterday, from before 7am until way after 2am and yet fewer than 14k views on Xitter for even the first post, yet it still had more likes than here on BSky Cheer me up guys as we go again..

Jimmy Lai, an immensely wealthy Hong Kong press baron, chose to return from safety abroad to stand with the supporters of freedom in HK. Today is his 1500th day in prison. Jimmy is a friend of mine and I have immense respect for him. He should be free!

The Tories are just lost now with Badenoch. Her strategy announcements are contradictory, badly thought through and mostly helping Farage. Can't see her last long if this doesn't change.

Day 1079 of the war in Europe. Putin's 3-day plan isn't going very well. A succession of hits on Russian oil plants seems to be having an effect. while overnight #Ukraine managed to damage a drone airfield. All the important news, all the time, every single day. Here's the🧵

Hey, Siri: give me an example of political brass neck.

More headaches for Rupert Murdoch. The Met is now asking for transcripts of the pre-trial hearings in Prince Harry’s & Lord Watson’s phone-tapping case. Their counsel says the Murdoch group’s disclosures offer grounds for a fresh police investigation into ‘perjury and cover-ups’.

Morale of the story: EUROPE needs its nuclear deterrent, and fast, because we cannot trust the US. And it cannot be the French, because one day Le Pen will win. It needs to be a EUROPEAN deterrent, insulated from national politics. Like the ECB, but for (and to prevent) Doomsday.

The city of Paris has left toxic Twitter. The account for Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo had already left the platform at the end of 2023, calling the site a "weapon of mass destruction of our democracies." Every decent person and account should follow their example.

Absolutely this from Ed Davey 👏

Psychiatrist to Braverman “Is that wall in the room with us now?”

This is not journalism. The next elections are more than four years away. The Times‘ relentless anti- Labour campaign is tiring and doesn’t help anybody in Britain.

As Russia celebrates the New Year I gauge the mood in Moscow. “Russian people are patient,” one man tells me, “they stay silent.” Thanks to @lizashuvalova.bsky.social

The scale of protest across Georgia - now into day 31 - should get global attention. Today, hundreds of thousands have stood together in a human “chain of unity” across the country. This is just one small section in Tbilisi. A powerful fight against Russia & for democracy. #GeorgiaProtests 🇬🇪🇪🇺

One Russian paper today: “We need to say it straight: Russia & Iran suffered a major defeat in Syria.” Plus, problems with the Superjet (“the wretched child of the Russian aviation industry”) & an attempt to declare Santa Claus a ‘foreign agent’.
