Turd Reich has a nice ring to it, and Felon47 is its Shitler.

There’s a saying in IT “a backup you haven’t tested is no backup at all”.
Everyone should backup regularly and do a test restore from time to time.

As the author of two independently published novels I approve this message! 👍

Unless you’ve disabled Fast Start then a shutdown isn’t a shutdown. It only closes user programs then it hibernates the O/S itself. The rational being it’ll boot quicker, which with an nVME drive it absolutely doesn’t. Disabling Fast Start is the first thing I do on EVERY PC I work on.

It’s not a real castle though is it? It’s most likely a rich Victorian industrialists home built to look a bit like a castle.

Is Future’s Edge a stand alone or part of a larger series?

Both. Depending on case. I always recommend full image backups on external drives as it allows the quickest recovery of not just your data but all your apps and, crucially, settings and customisations. Cloud (if you have a GOOD password and MFA) for your essential data.

Although I’m sure all this chat sounds very much like an empty stable door banging so hard it gives you a headache for poor @emmakennedy.bsky.social who is the one facing an horrific re-writing task. If I’d lost the text of one of my novels I would have sobbed for a week. 😢

It can. It’s been the default and probably best Mac backup system for more than a decade.

Time Machine backs up your Mac. For those who are paranoid you’d have two 1Tb or more USB external drives (£60 from Amazon for reliable Toshiba ones). Swap them daily & keep one in the car glovebox.
Also install antivirus software. There is such a thing as Mac malware but it’s rarer than Windows.

That’s stunning.

Ouch. That’s horrible.
But on the plus side you now know you need to get an external backup drive and set up Time Machine. Do that and it’ll never happen again. I’ve worked in IT for over 30 years and NO-ONE takes backup seriously until they have a disaster.
