In fact in every instance. Gaza is worse, the Ukraine/ Russian war is worse, unemployment is up, stock markets are chaotic, he is inviting crowds to riot. There is simply an agenda here that we don’t fully understand. I understand though it’s not in the US best interest.

Today was more violent because of the National Guard. But the city isn’t burning. It’s manageable. So call in the military. Why are doing the opposite of what the best practices are? That is the question we should be asking?

Crowd control is studied. There is a science. We know what to do and what not to do. There has been times when California has called in the guard but the Home Depot protest was a few hundred people and a couple of violent protestors who should be arrested. The police actions were appropriate

The city is not burning. There have been a handful of cars burned. Arrests should be made but the hysteria over that ICE agents were spit on is ridiculous. Are they really that fragile that they need military and people shooting rubber bullets randomly into the crowd to protect them from spit?

“The agency should use the principle of proportionality to tailor a response to the actions and mood of the crowd, and should avoid increasing tensions by using more gear and equipment than necessary.” Bringing in the national guard made the situation escalate today.

A President who claims to believe in states rights decided , without consulting with the governor, decided to send in the National guard. He made statements like if they spit we hit. So he escalated the situation. So now he calls in military. It’s the opposite of what experience tells us to do

The Home Depot protest wasn’t planned. It rose organically through social media posts. Tensions were high before they arrived. But LA is used to this type of thing. They never said people should be allowed to commit crimes. They said “don’t worry. We have this.” And they did

Protests are not a new phenomenon. They’ve been studied. Behavioral analysis have been applied. Training is available. The goal is to avoid a four dead in Ohio situation. It’s an operational issue regardless of the issue being protested

Back in the early 80s, before the term critical race theory was invented my academic emphasis in an interdisciplinary major was minority groups and subcultures. I took a class on white ethnicity because the immigration experience of white immigrants to the US are also diverse and diversity is good.

Wait? Am I saying there’s value in what teaching critical race theory in America? I’m saying there’s value in understanding our country’s history and enlightenment can come from knowing the stories of communities to which we are not a part. I’m actually for having a secure border.

I’m not saying not to tell the stories of the immigrants who do not have legal status to be here. Of course we should, but not exclusively. When we talk about race and ethnicity in the US it’s a complex interwoven tale we tell. Let’s remember the Spaniards were colonizers. Let’s say that also.

I live in New Mexico. “Hispanic” means something different. Let’s tell the stories of families whose citizenship changed without them ever moving to “America”. Let’s tell the stories of families who legally immigrated a 100 years ago. Let’s tell the stories of Hispanic people who were born here

Over on Twitter though the remnants of birther discourse began. One woman said she had searched the internet and could find no documents proving his citizenship. 🧐. I don’t have my birth certificate posted on line. Does he have to prove his citizenship to every random person on social media?

When US citizen and SEIU President David Huerta was arrested I saw so many posts on Twitter shocked that an illegal was running the union. “Send him back”. Well, he was born in LA, he is detained in LA, drop the charges and he will be, in fact, back where he came from. That’s easy to accomplish

I don’t have the ability to look at someone and determine their legal status, but one fall-out of the immigration deportation is people looking at protestors in LA and determining they are all illegal “send them all back”. I fear general bigotry against Hispanics will increase among us common folk
