“Loneliness and isolation can lead to: 29% increased risk of heart disease; 32% increased risk of stroke; 50% increased risk of developing dementia among older adults; and 60% increased risk of premature death.” Surgeon General recommends designing cities to create more connections. #WalkableCities

Some cities that signed on this amicus brief to block Trump's NIH cuts: - St. Louis, Missouri - Harris County, Texas - Salt Lake City, Utah - Gainesville, Florida - Nashville, Tennessee - Cleveland, Ohio - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Madison, Wisconsin - Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Gregg is a former Marine and Forest Service ranger. He's saved the lives of hikers dangling off a cliff or going through cardiac arrest, and he's bravely fought forest fires to save small rural towns. 100% of his salary is paid by WA state. Elon fired him. Share his story.

I think it would make a big difference in our health if we banned Pharma ads from America like the rest of the world does.

Donald Trump has told Kristi Noem to spend $200 million of public funds on ads thanking him for "securing the border," North Korea-style www.semafor.com/article/02/1... www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

Under Trump and Musk, America will fall behind every nation in terms of economic success, academic research, scientific breakthroughs, and more. But we'll still be a world leader in traffic deaths.

The best thing about the idea of the DOGE dividend is that it'll force a certain transparency on the process. Look at the size of your dividend check and you'll quickly understand how little Elon is getting done.

Add up the claimed savings on the DOGE website and (right now )you get $7.19b from contract savings, and $0.14b from real estate, for a total of $7.3b, or $21.47 per American. Trump is talking about giving a "DOGE dividend" of 20% of these savings. Enjoy your $4.29.

We have been careful to avoid using the word coup, but it’s time to call it what it is—this is a coup. Trump signed an executive order granting only the attorney general or the president the authority to interpret laws executed by the executive branch.

Bernie Sanders: "The struggle against Trump, the struggle against oligarchy, which is led by Elon Musk ... that's not gonna be won here in Capitol Hill. It's gonna be won by millions of people all over this country standing up and saying, 'we fought and died for democracy.'"

What would a TV ad promoting alternatives to driving look like? What if people who love cycling and progressive transportation reclaimed ideas like freedom, independence and even patriotism? We decided to give it a shot. Check out our new video, "America, It's Just Like Riding a Bike."

Measles cases continue to surge globally, putting millions of children at risk. More than 10 million people globally were infected with measles in 2023, a 20% increase from the previous year. bit.ly/48SAtkf

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

The #1 reported reason people avoid doctor’s appointments is because they’re afraid of finding out they have a serious illness. If you have that fear, that’s normal and you’re not alone. Also remember, there is basically no serious illness that isn’t less serious if you catch it sooner.

Congress is handing over its power, and that should worry us all. open.spotify.com/episode/2SIb...

Incompetence in Washington puts every American at risk, no matter how you voted. No one should be happy that the DOGE team - the same folks who randomly published classified U.S. security information online today - wants access to your bank account & Social Security numbers.

“Like cigarettes, enormous vehicles can kill those who never used the product…40 years ago, the outrage of secondhand smoke was an eye-opener for many Americans. A similar narrative could help people recognize the havoc that 4-wheeled behemoths now wreak on our streets.”— @davidzipper.bsky.social

Government is not just a business. As a restaurant, the new owner can close the doors for a month and do a full revamp. No one harmed. The hospital can’t close doors and kick the patients to the curb, literally people die.

This comment on r/fednews really stood out to me. Trump and Musk want people to think they're firing do-nothing "bureaucrats," but they're really getting rid of people dedicated to serving this country and keeping it operational. I hope these stories get told.

Trump wants it cancelled *because* it’s working.

Hi Bluesky! Glad to be here.

not paying indirect costs for research is like only paying the players in the Super Bowl. can't have a Super Bowl without coaches, referees, security, janitors, announcers, stadium staff, and a stadium - and you can't have research without supporting people and facilities

Trump's tariff-for-tax cut swap is very cleverly disguised populist policy that sounds like it's all about beating up on China to help American workers. The reality is that it's about tax cuts for the rich, paid for by import taxes on the American working and middle class.

What if the root of our modern anxiety isn't social media, but something much older? Our brains are struggling to adapt to a world that's too big. We're living in a world that feels increasingly anonymous & it's driving us crazy. Let's explore why we're all overwhelmed:

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

When you solve for the wrong problem, not only do you not get the solution, you can cause harm. The President wasted water that was being saved for farmers for a PR stunt. This was harmful, ludicrous, and solved nothing.

REP. @maxwellfrost.bsky.social says billionaires like Elon Musk want Americans to blame immigrants and trans people etc. for their economic struggles when their insatiable greed is behind the Gilded Age levels of inequality 🎯 🇺🇸 💰

The American College of OB/GYN’s website is now hosting the critical documents purged by the CDC This is what every professional medical organization should be doing right now #MedSky www.acog.org/clinical/cli...

This is what happens when you ask me to help sanewash the Trump tariffs.

MAGA would consider Reagan “woke” today. This ain’t right wing or left wing anymore.

Everyone seems to be framing Trump's freeze on federal grants as a Constitutional fight over powers of the purse & whether presidents can disregard Congressional appropriations. It is that. But also at stake is the fundamental validity of government contracts! I see much less discussion on this... 🧵

We should all be in this business to protect the freedoms of all, this month and every month. #blackhistorymonth

This investment could be high speed rail along the Wasatch Front - cleaner air and more efficient

“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath 50 reasons to want walkable streets.

Healthcare is a human right that every other democratic and developed nation defends and offers to all. A society should be judged by how it cares for its most vulnerable; and by that we are about to start *losing bigly*

Worried about the health of our planet and the health of each other? - ride a bicycle - eat your vegetables - walk to a neighborhood park One person doing this once, sure, but everyone, everyday is a new and brighter future for the country.

Donald Trump has declared the U.S. is in a “national-energy emergency.” “The actual emergency, obviously, is with the climate,” @billmckibben.bsky.social writes. nyer.cm/pmI58Hh

This will cost a LOT of lives, and not just in the United States. And I actualy think they know that. #WHO

It’s called ‘revisionist history’: within a as little as a generation new customs become thought of as “the way it’s always been” and this is especially true for car-dependent living and urban design.

This is great! And Main Street should consider staying open to pedestrians and a trolley (closed to cars) year round, with nearby parking garages and side street parking to accommodate.
