psychiatryonline.org/doi/abs/10.1... Far from universal but in some FND cases anger is indeed a dominant emotion, not just outward, but also the frustration with the symptoms appears to be a critical perpetuating factor

New review article on health anxiety for neurologists with Huw Green in Practical Neurology ❌Health anxiety is NOT FND. ✅Can occur in any neurological condition, ✅Reassurance usually makes it worse ✅Specific treatment. pn.bmj.com/content/earl... Free link - tinyurl.com/5n7shutv

Worth thinking about implicit and explicit (motor) self-efficacy, and how both can be reinforced therapeutically.

www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti.... Can we predict which FND patients respond to treatment? Not really- my take- best to offer everyone a chance rather than make false assumptions

New editorial in @PracticalNeurol on the pitfalls of diagnostic signs in FND - a short thread... pn.bmj.com/content/earl...

Sharing our new paper reporting key stakeholder perspectives on outcome measurement in #FND. This work will help ensure that outcome measures are patient-centred and clinically relevant in future. Thanks Sonja Rutten @abw89.bsky.social @timnicholson.bsky.social! 🙏 link.springer.com/article/10.1...

First neuropsychiatry journal club - discussion of functional movement disorder as potential Parkinson prodrome. Do join :) #neuropsychiatry #Parkinson #functionalneurologicaldisorder

move slow and fix things

Interesting observations. Wonder if cerebral vasoconstriction could be related to functional vascular diseases such as Raynaud's syndrome, acrocyanosis and erythromelalgia. Much to learn.

The convention here is to say you are delighted to share a paper you’ve written. I'm not quite sure I can say that, but I will be pleased if this paper can further understandings of patient and social science perspectives around #pain and #FND. Look away now if health updates are not your thing 1/n

Fascinating case series of Dopa-responsive dystonia with functional movement disorder www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Interesting. If ketamine makes you ignore priors in a way similar to what is observed in schizophrenia, and FND is a problem of abnormally weighted priors and almost no one's seen FND in schizophrenia - has anyone tried ketamine for FND?

Lovely/comprehensive review of metacognition and functional neurological disorder; a condition that demands a metacognitive interpretation: doi.org/10.1093/brai... The emerging picture aligns with findings in psychopathology more broadly—metacognitive performance is often equivalent to controls.

Proud to report that you can now preorder the second edition of my book on FND in German: www.amazon.de/Funktionelle...

Finally, a prospective study on FND in MS www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Thank you so much to @jenlucpiquant.bsky.social for this great piece, telling the story behind my upcoming publication! :)

This is great

I wanna hear the Johnny Cash version

We all know about inequalities in income & physical childcare but inequalities in cognitive load are often forgotten. This paper is on gender & the household, but there are many other cognitive load inequalities also in the office. Think of who does more mentorship link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Why inflammatory reductionism is a threat to psychiatry (and the rest of medicine) academic.oup.com/brain/advanc... Fascinating from Tom Pollak (not on BlueSky?) - via @annaciaunica.bsky.social

Explaining functional symptoms well is essential. Demonstrating motor phenomena such as the Hoover sign is very helpful. But how do we explain sensory symptoms, which affect 4 in 5 patients with functional neurological disorder? (answer below, paper here: doi.org/10.1136/pn-2...) [1/3]

please stop suggesting I solve my problem by changing my behavior. I do not want to do that

Couldn't find effect sizes in review but if changes are meaningful, it would be low-hanging fruit to test this in clinical populations.

This is still what neurologists do

Drawings by Sarah Wigglesworth. Wishing everyone pleasantly chaotic Christmas dinners.

Metabolic health is closely intertwined with brain health, I write as I eat my breakfast

I've put together a starter pack for the FND science community. Please repost to share the link and do let me know of folks I've missed so I can add them to the group. Thanks everyone 🙏 🧵 1/

SIMPLY HAVING A

How common is FND? ‘Incidence and Prevalence of Functional Neurological Disorder: A systematic review’ – a new open access article in JNNP led by Sara Finkelstein with Clare Diamond, and @alancarson15.bsky.social jnnp.bmj.com/content/earl... 1/🧵

New to #bluesky and excited to share a new publication at the interface of my two main clinical interests in neuropsychiatry. "New Framework for the Continuum of Concussion and Functional Neurological Disorder" with @silverberglab.bsky.social in BJSM. Thread below 🧵 bjsm.bmj.com/content/earl...

Preach 🤪

Me trying to keep up with the literature
