Such a scenario is redolent of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact from the 1930s, which (amongst other things) secretly cut up Poland between Hitler and Stalin. I think the correct response to something like this would be to suspend the US from NATO, and for the EU to invite the UK back into it. At once.
