Journalists at mainstream US publications are absolutely allowed to engage in activism as long as it is aimed at reinforcing existing hierarchies and undermining progressive change. NYT news reporters recently engaged in a startlingly effective campaign against trans rights, for example.

As an offshoot of this thread, let’s talk about what happens if federal, state, or local officials text, email, call, or show up at your door wanting to talk to you about what you said about the President. I have a theme, a thesis, a throughline, a leitmotif, which is SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH. /1

If you're canceling @washingtonpost.com please consider moving those $ to independent journalism like @51st.news, which could use a boost given the economic cancellations.

We heard over and over how “from the river to the sea” was irrefutably a call to genocide while a literal nazi salute was just a silly misunderstanding some quirky guys have been doing

acknowledging the history and existence of black people in america is not dei; it is not diversity; it is describing what is in front of you.

All on-screen martial arts choreography in Sinophone cinema has roots in traditional opera, many early pioneering directors and actors like King Hu, Lau Kar-Leung, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, either came from an opera troupe background or looked to it for inspiration. The difference between wuxia and..

2019. Peter Pomerantsev, This Is Not Propaganda. His work has been overtaken by events, but it is very valuable historic context for where we are, and this particular passage is useful to think with.

at some point if you're willing to admit that this salute mimicks another *recent* famous salute you might as well just say which historical salute both are mimicking. but apparently nobody wants to be the first to say "Nazi"

Also I keep seeing people insist the set up is for a Reichstag event, and I hate to break it to you, but the set up is for another Red Summer. And tbh the way "progressive" America has reacted to Black deaths tells me this is going to be a rough ride to grasping the obvious.

Arguably we are overdue for what is happening now. I think that's why so many communities of color are upset but not spiraling. White people are experiencing our reality. Trust the government? Why? The US government unified to oppress and not much else. Certainly not to progress

"She boldly reported her findings in an editorial in the newspaper that she co-owned and edited, The Memphis Free Press and Headlight. That editorial, however, caused a riot in Memphis and she was forced to leave her home to save her life. The office of the newspaper was destroyed."

when people argue for giving in to fascism it's generally because they find fascism appealing. 1

Ford was a writer’s writer.

The university that declares “We are not throwing trans kids under the bus, we are not ending diversity and inclusiveness efforts, and we are not opening our doors to ICE agents” would not only be uniquely heroic but would be doing some strong branding work on the cheap.

In Ferguson, they swept phone data from the crowd, then later drove down streets and if there were 2 or more of those people in a house, they raided it.

This is where you go to tell the National Park Service to restore the word "transgender" in its entry on the Stonewall monument. (Scroll down.)

The National Park Service has removed "T" and all mention of transgender people from the Stonewall National Monument. Trans women were some of the most influential activists behind the Stonewall movement and what followed. 3 articles of clothing laws were why raids happened. Erasure.

1. On Friday, protests erupted at Stonewall National Monument, the historic site of the Stonewall uprisings that ignited the modern gay rights movement, in response to the National Park Service removing transgender people from the Stonewall Website. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Protest at Stonewall tomorrow. You can’t spell Stonewall without the T.

One would think that this was basic. And yet....

"What are we supposed to do, we don't control Congress" "What are we supposed to do, we don't have a supermajority" "What are we supposed to do, our supermajority has moderate democrats"

Congressperson John Lewis, whose ‘good trouble’ they love to quote so much, was arrested 45 times in his life. The last was in 2013 protesting for immigrants, during the Obama presidency.

Memo to journalists: There's a high likelihood the thing you are writing about does not "raise concerns" about something bad happening -- it is in fact the bad thing happening. Reevaluate your language and maybe your entire approach to the story. Tell the whole truth.

This @melissagiragrant.com piece takes on social media narratives about protesting ('why aren't people in the streets?'), and highlights the fact that many communities have BEEN protesting, never STOPPED protesting, are ALWAYS fighting for their lives.

student protests did not stop. students protest year-round, even if you only pay attention when you're cheering for cops to round them up. hope this helps

Harvard Divinity School punished students for having a PRAYER-IN last semester. I absolutely understand why students have decided to change tactics. When you tell people to stop protesting genocide, it absolutely impacts how they respond to your shouts about fascism. Everything is connected.

Re-segregation is just the first step. Make no mistake, they don't intend to stop there. And it won't just be Black people in the crosshairs. Remember what Bannon said about there being too many Asian CEO's?

“The liberal establishment has not raised the alarms. Worse, they have often served as the right’s complicit partner, oblivious to the precedents that Trump is now inheriting: broader police power, unaccountable presidential power, generalized repression, and gross restrictions on speech.”

me: hey brain what the name of my us house rep? 🧠: oh that racist guy? me: yes, his name please 🧠: right, "racist guy" is his name now me: ok that's accurate but not helpful 🧠: how about "DINO asshole"? me: 😐 🧠: how about "cowardly disgrace to his office" me: maybe i'll just look it up

Yes, this. Call your congress member and your senators, contact your state and local officials, and talk to your family & neighbors who may be angry, scared, & hopeless, and let them know they can do this too. Every small thing matters.

First of all, I don't have to know! I am not a politician. But Dems can vote NO on Trump's cabinet picks, for one. How is this even a question? I feel like I am going crazy.

8-ish years ago I got strangers to pay off $300k in “lunch debt” so kids who were being punished for owing money could do things like eat, go to prom, and, walk at their own graduation. In the 20 years I’ve engaged in social media, I have never received more hate for anything else I’ve said or done.

if you're at all interested in these questions (does class have some kind of priority? If so, what kind exactly?), particularly as they come up in the US context, you can't really do better than this article outside of journals

She has asylum status and a work permit. She was arrested after a fight with her little brother. It didn't take long for it to move beyond "very dangerous people."

Whole Foods workers in Philadelphia just accomplished something huge: they overcame Amazon's union-busting tactics and voted to form the store's first union in over four decades. Remember that we can always find hope in the labor movement.
