If it were me I would either leave as-is or crop just a little

It felt like I was babysitting for a bit because I then had to stop the silly kid from eating my foam mat and they got sulky with me

Alas, I will have to settle for tiny birds in the forest instead

They are pretty strong swimmers even at that age!
Here’s an older pair looking for food on the river bottom

Yes, and at least the ones alongside the trail seem pretty confident around people too. Have had them just carry on their business around my feet.

Maybe in a particularly marshy spot at the wrong time of year but I've never really had a problem with them around here.

Yeah, any balcony adornments at my house get worked over by the kākā 😅. Zealandia has made such a huge difference to the city's wildlife in the last 20 years. Hope you get to visit again some time!

I saw one completely by accident at Otari! Just looked to my left while walking and made direct eye contact with one 😅. They seem to like lurking under the fronds of tree ferns.

The little watering hole I have a trail camera on is so popular I’ll be cleaning it out, turn around and a tūī, hihi or toutouwai will be waiting for me to leave. The fantails don’t even wait, they just dive right in in front of me😄.

This year there are two families I know well and a mystery pair who surprise me occasionally. One family is Ceecee and her third husband with 4 babies. Their neighbours are "The Goblins" who have, I think, 5 babies.

Just about! I live very close to Zealandia and I started monitoring toutouwai as a volunteer in one of the neighbouring reserves. I got to know the other species in the area too including the titipounamu pairs along that stretch. They are one of my favourites to watch!

I usually find them via blackbirds by I’ve seen a few mobs that included just about every small and medium bird species in the area 😆

I just made a playlist for my 7hr road trip that’s in two weeks and promptly started listening to it I’m a little worried I will hate it by the time I get in the car 😅

I may have made a noise that was both impressed and disgusted
