on.ft.com/4ja38VQ Pension Protection Fund vows to boost UK investment if allowed to grow

Tough. Also: fair.

Deeply strange entering middle-age at a time in world history where things are getting measurably worse. Just a continual psychic struggle of “is this fogeyism or are things just not what they used to be?”

Strongly agree with this.

Can't remember a statement by a Chancellor that has gone down as badly, as quickly, and with almost all parts of the political spectrum, as this one

Darren Jones, the second-in-command to Rachel Reeves, was soon slammed for his "staggering" remark.

Peston: ‘Can you answer that question today?’ Darren Jones: ‘No’ The Chief Secretary to the Treasury explains why the government failed to measure how many people will get back into work from its welfare reforms #Peston

Important to remember that European banks play a big role in dollar liquidity intermediation, mostly through subsidiaries and broker-dealers. During the GFC, they received immediate support from the Fed through liquidity swaps. Things could get murky if that support isn't there next time.

Dozens of councils in England are functionally bankrupt Social care is being cut, libraries are being closed, youth workers sacked, and Labour is threatening councils with cutting funding if they don't fix potholes and jump through bureaucratic hurdles to prove it?! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

NEW from @jrf-uk.bsky.social Much has been made of the pressure on public finances. Household finances remain the elephant in the room. If OBR adjust their Mar forecast in line with the BoE in Feb, it will see the average family £1,400/yr worse off by 2030, compared with today. Thread.

The phrase "trapped on disability benefits", which I've seen used several times this week, is quite like "wheelchair-bound". Both phrases take something that can be a means of liberation and describe it as a prison.

“Not everyone will win trophies. Not everyone will be at the top of their field. But everyone can live a life where they can constantly strive to improve. Where they can look back and say: ‘I gave my best, I stayed true to myself, and I made a difference.’ That is real success.”

Regarding the hypothesis that UK firms were recently increasing profit margins under cover of general price inflation: corporate profit as % of GDP is now at the lowest level in 20 years. Not conclusive of course, because this data is tricky and there's lots going on. But suggestive at least.

NEW 🧵 Is human intelligence starting to decline? Recent results from major international tests show that the average person’s capacity to process information, use reasoning and solve novel problems has been falling since around the mid 2010s What should we make of this? www.ft.com/content/a801...

EXCL: Keir Starmer faces biggest rebellion yet over welfare cuts with dozens of angry Labour MPs threatening to vote against freezing disability benefits. Many concerned that Rachel Reeves could go further than former Tory chancellor George Osborne who, despite deep benefit cuts, kept PIP rising.

Poor old Matt Goodwin's petard just blew up everywhere.

Shocking decision by government - abruptly cutting all funding to @tellmamauk.bsky.social at a time when Islamophobia is rising and the world feels divided and scarily unstable. Now is the time to invest properly in groups that hold communities safe not leaving hatred unchecked to sow division.

'No-one is talking about young men' increasingly occupies the same space as 'we need an honest conversation about immigration'. We never shut up about young men. It's one of the only things we ever talk about, although admittedly only ever to say 'we need to be more reactionary'.

NEW: The actions of Trump and Vance in recent weeks highlight something under-appreciated. The American right is now ideologically closer to countries like Russia, Turkey and in some senses China, than to the rest of the west (even the conservative west). My column: www.ft.com/content/3046...

NEW: UK, Germany and France issue joint statement on "catastrophic" humanitarian situ in Gaza, warning Israel could be in breach of international law by halting entry of aid. "Humanitarian aid should never be contingent on a ceasefire or used as a political tool."

We are back to “productive assets” - a term widely used but rarely defined. on.ft.com/41qN1wb Pensions minister says schemes must invest more in UK

excellent example of "accounting system as mental prison" - if you cut the social care budget and put the responsibility onto families, it looks like you have more money to spend on military investment, but the actual amount of labour hours available has probably shrunk

Speculation this morning that the government will use welfare cuts to help make its sums add up on 26th March. A thread on why tax options are really the "politically difficult" choice the Chancellor should consider.

TPR's Data Strategy is renewed, we should help it catch up henrytapper.com/2025/03/05/t... TPR has decided to share a document that says what we hoped , maybe even thought, was in place.

Obviously no simple/single/right answer. But I'd say it's a combination of: a) Extreme (Ayn Rand) libertarianism [Musk] b) Looting the state/blatant corruption/rent extraction [Musk & Trump] c) "Know-Nothing" anti-immigration/anti-globalisation/protectionism [Trump & Vance] [1/2]

Starmer appears to be caught off guard by the decision by Trump overnight to withdraw aid to Ukraine. He told the Commons on Monday this would not happen. "As I understand that is not their position," he told the Commons, in response to a question from the SNP's Stephen Flynn.
