"It’s a familiar Silicon Valley mindset, the reason startups are forever reinventing a bus, or a bodega, or mail. It’s the implacable confidence that if you’re smart at one thing you must be smart at all of the things." www.wired.com/story/doge-i...

This is so, so, so fucked. And the only immediate end is cruelty.

Hard to argue with him

"When you're a star they let you do it... you can do anything."

Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia has published a letter sent to him by Trump’s Department of Justice threatening to potentially prosecute him for criticizing Elon Musk.

NEW: WIRED can confirm that Edward "Big Balls" Coristine is now listed as a staffer at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which is exactly what it sounds like, along with another DOGE technologist. This is by @kimzetter.bsky.social

NEW: Despite DOGE, Trump's agenda calls for adding trillions of dollars to U.S debt Budget experts on the “rhetoric versus reality” behind the Trump-Musk efforts >> www.nbcnews.com/politics/dog...

Fantastic, clear-eyed analysis by @gideonrachman.bsky.social The Financial Times calls on Europeans to “de-risk” - from the US! Wow.

Again, there are literally not enough jobs to rapidly absorb all these displaced federal workers (who will also now be competing for non-government jobs with everyone else in the U.S.).

I can’t remember where I read this, but it’s important: Why is it that when people think about traveling to the past, they worry about doing something small that will drastically change the present, but no one in the present thinks that doing something small today can drastically change the future?

They're going after the LGB too. We told you so. www.washingtonian.com/2025/02/18/k...

i wish the republicans had been this limp and useless when obama had the supermajority. forget universal healthcare, we could have gotten reparations

That means no free and fair elections

your outie always uses semantic html

NEW: Here is Trump's executive order purporting to end the independence of multi-member head independent agencies. www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

Electing him once was bad enough but might have been chalked up to a bizarre mistake. Having re-elected him, nobody can assume any sort of stability or consistency necessary for partnership from the US ever again. Credibility is destroyed and rightfully so.

Need a distraction today? Special multipart "Around Portland" 1/?

So, who's the head of DOGE which apparently is in charge of everything now if it isn't Musk?

NEW: A government employee for Notify. gov, a system used by agencies to send mass texts to the public, has resigned in protest after an Elon Musk ally demanded root access to it. They said the system contains the public's phone numbers & private info: www.404media.co/musk-ally-de...

This is the kind of critical analysis I live for

This is why you fight these cowards. The moment you stand up to them, they crumble. Homan has nothing. The Fourth Amendment is clear and I am well within my duties to educate people of their rights. He can threaten me with jail and call names all he wants. He’s got nothing else.

oh wow the future has arrived, move over Pauline Kael

Abruptly firing people who work in air traffic control is like murdering your own soldiers in the middle of a war. Even if you think things now aren’t working as efficiently as they should there’s no clear path to recovering from this; it’s just a really extremely foolish and dangerous thing to do.

People in tech talk about the idea of a “10x programmer” — someone whose work is worth that of 10 others. I get the impression Musk etc think they can apply it all over the federal workforce but like… there’s no such thing as a 10x ATC navigational aid maintenance worker. Some jobs just need people.

A team from SpaceX is being brought in to overhaul FAA’s air traffic control system

Imprisoning journalists is fine when we do it

Union Square rally.

Zelenskyy's Munich speech and press statements today seem to mark a new turn for him. In the past he has used moral suasion and guilt trips as a cudgel with DC and Brussels, but I'm not aware of him explicitly calling out the US as a definitively unreliable partner for both Kyiv and Europe before.

SCOOP w/ @jacobrosenberg.bsky.social for @motherjones.com : A DOGE worker wrote in a recently deleted Substack post that he was radicalized by reading a writer who has denied the Holocaust, boosted 9/11 conspiracy theories, & platformed anti-Black racism. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

You know what congressional Democrats could be doing while they're in the minority? Highlighting videos like this that explain why the government grants Musk is targeting are good for America.

AND ALSO THERE'S A COUP

This is a program for teenagers with serious disabilities who are finishing high school and transitioning to their next steps in life. Trump just axed it, effective immediately, in the middle of the night, with no notice.

i feel like it's an open question whether or not the flu vaccine will even be available next season

These are the articles that make people say, “Yeah, fuck it. Maybe I shouldn’t subscribe after all.”

Kent State, May 4, 1970

This is fascism.

Whoever wrote this headline deserves to get beaten with hammers.

Mike Pence just reposted an old article he wrote about the limitations on the powers of a president. For some reason. Here is a part of it.
